O'Brien makes international bow but Wilson has to wait
03 March 2010 By Neil Allen
Liam O'Brien's England debut ended in disappointment, with a late draw against Holland.
But there was no Republic of Ireland bow for Marc Wilson against Brazil.
Promising goalkeeper O'Brien was handed his under-19 debut as a 61st-minute substitute in last night's friendly in Waalwijk.
Replacing Fulham's Wesley Foderingham with the visitors winning 1-0, it appeared the 18-year-old would be capping his maiden international appearance with a clean sheet.
But with just four minutes remaining, fellow substitute Reece Brown put through his own net to equalise for the Dutch.
Earlier, Chelsea's Jacob Mellis had put England ahead after just seven minutes.
That appeared enough for the visitors, managed by former Fratton favourite Noel Blake.
Then in the 86th minute, a free-kick deflected off the head of Brown and past O'Brien.
Regardless, it was still a memorable night for the Blues keeper who moved to the club two years ago from QPR.
Since then he has flourished under the tutelage of goalkeeping coach Dave Coles.
O'Brien will be hoping to retain his place in the squad for May's trip to Ukraine, where England face Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Republic of Ireland.
The winner of that group will go forward to the European finals in France this summer.
Meanwhile, Wilson, left, was an unused substitute in the Republic of Ireland's 2-0 defeat to Brazil at the Emirates last night.
The 22-year-old earned a maiden call-up to Giovanni Trapattoni's squad and, with Richard Dunne out injured, was hopeful of earning a start.
Instead, Paul McShane and Sean St Ledger were chosen in the centre of defence, and they remained unchanged for the match's duration.
That left Wilson as one of seven unused substitutes on the night and still awaiting his Republic of Ireland debut at senior level.
However, the former Northern Ireland youngster remains in the international frame, having finally made the breakthrough in Trapattoni's squad.
