Cup Third Round. 02 March 1901Small Heath beat Blackpool 10-1 in a Second Division match. Small Heath, who became Birmingham in 1905 and added City 40 years later, reached double figures in League matches more times than any other club. They did so five times between 1892 and 1905. 02 March 1903When R. Crompton captained England against Wales it meant that Portsmouth had provided both the first professional and first amateur captain (V.J. Woodward). For the record, England won the match 2-1. 02 March 1946A record crowd of 76,588 at Villa Park saw Derby County beat the home side 4-3 in the First Leg of their F.A. Cup Sixth Round tie. Doherty(2), Carter and Crooks scored for Derby while Villa's goals came from Edwards, Brown and a Leuty own goal. The return leg resulted in a draw and County went on to win the competition for the first time in their history. 02 March 1950West Bromwich Albion signed outside-right Ronnie Allen from Port Vale. He later converted to centre-forward and played in that position in the 1954 Cup Final when Albion beat Preston North End 4-2. Between 1952 and 1955 he was also capped five times for England. He left the Hawthorns for Crystal Palace in 1961 and retired from the playing side three years later to become coach at Wolverhampton Wanderers. By that time he had joined the elite band of players who had made over 600 League appearances and scored over 300 goals. For Port Vale he played 123 matches and scored 34 goals, Albion 414 matches 206 goals and Palace 92 matches 34 goals. He scored a hat trick in his very last League appearance. In addition there were 32 goals in the F.A. Cup, two for England and one for a League XI. Wolves appointed him manager in the summer of 1966. In November 1968 he travelled abroad to become manager of Athletic Bilbao where he remained until 1971. 1972 saw him appointed manager of Sporting Lisbon before he returned to England in 1973 for a short spell in charge of Walsall. He then returned to Albion in a scouting capacity before managing his former club between June and December of 1977 when he took charge of the Saudi Arabia national side. Joined Panathinaikos in 1980 and returned to the Hawthorns yet again in July 1981. He stood down in May 1982 but remained as general manager until 1983 when he left the game altogether to pursue his business interests. =================================== happy birthday to......

March 2, 1963: QPR 1 Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 0 - (Bedford) before 8,000+ This was Ray Drinkwater's final game in goal (replaced by Peter Springett) Beside Bedford and Drinkwater, the QPR team included Ingham, Keen and Lazarus [Flashback to March 2008 "Ray Drinkwater (RIP)" www.qpr.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~1276682,00.html QPR Official Site - RAY DRINKWATER Posted on: Mon 31 Mar 2008 It is with great sadness that the Club has learned of the death of former player, Ray Drinkwater. He was 76. Ray joined QPR in 1957, following a short time with Portsmouth. The talented goalkeeper made more than 200 appearances for the R's during a six-year stay, before going on to finish his career with Southern League team Bath City. He died on Tuesday, following a brief illness. The thoughts of the Club are with his wife Brenda, family and friends at this difficult time. Surrey Advertiser - March 28, 2008 Football and cricket star Drinkwater dies, aged 76 A FORMER Guildford City footballer who went on to play for Queens Park Rangers has died at the age of 76. Ray Drinkwater was spotted as a goalkeeper playing for local side Northway, his family having moved south from Jarrow in Northumberland. Drinkwater made his Southern League debut for City against Chelmsford in 1951, and played 109 times in all before he was bought by Portsmouth for £2,000. He only made eight appearances for the Fratton Park club, then playing in the old Football League first division. His switch to QPR came in 1958 and he stayed for five years, making 214 appearances at the start of Alec Stock’s highly successful reign. The club were in Division Three then, on the verge of some golden years. Drinkwater - born in May 1931 - finished his playing days with a switch to Southern League side Bath City, as a favour for Malcolm Allison as he took his early steps in management. He was also a dashing all-rounder for Ripley Cricket Club over two decades. Teammate and friend Guy Pullen remembered: “Ray was a brilliant slip catcher, a good first-change bowler and hit the ball incredibly hard. He won a Flora Doris Cup game for us in the dark at Farncombe and kept putting Arthur Balchin in to the houses across the road.†Drinkwater leaves behind his wife Brenda plus a son and daughter. March 2, 2007 - QPR Chairman Paladini Explains/Apologizes re his Post-Match Comments to Ian Holloway-
After the previous saturday's game there were various reports about what QPR Chairman Gianni Paladini said to former manager Ian Holloway (and whether he was being mean, sarcastic or simply joking.) Dave McIntyre in the Gazette reports on the explanation Paladini offered him.
No offence meant to Ollie - Paladini QPR 1 Plymouth 1 -By David McIntyre
QPR chairman Gianni Paladini has apologised after remarks he aimed at Ian Holloway angered a group of fans following Saturday’s draw with Plymouth. Holloway, back at Loftus Road for the first time since being sacked as Rangers manager, was given a warm reception by the home supporters. He was signing autographs outside the ground afterwards when Paladini was heard to joke “give us an autograph, ‘Ollie’†and “come back, we miss you!†That was taken by some as mocking the former Rs boss - much to Paladini’s bemusement. “I certainly didn’t mean it like that and I’m sincerely sorry if I gave anyone that impression,†he said. "I don’t want to offend anyone and thought nothing of it until I got a couple of phone calls telling me some people were upset. “Despite what people might think, myself and Ian Holloway are on good terms and we had just been speaking to each other and catching up. “As I walked past I said something to him which I meant as a joke between friends - nothing more than that. “I’m shocked that some people there thought I was making fun of him and them. That was the last thing on my mind.†Holloway was denied a winning return by Lee Cook’s 59th-minute equaliser - a goal that temporarily kept QPR out of the bottom three. Barnsley’s win at Stoke on Monday night then dragged Rangers into the drop zone. Plymouth played the final nine minutes with 10 men after Lilian Nalis, whose goal had earlier put them ahead, was sent off for two bookable offences. "There will always be a part of me which belongs to Rangers, but I am a Pilgrim now,†Holloway reflected. "I wish QPR well, and I wish John Gregory well. He is a good manager and can keep them in this division.†Gregory’s team now face a vital match at Ipswich on Saturday having failed to take maximum points at home. "The opportunity to win was there for us against Plymouth, especially after Nalis was sent off,†Gregory admitted. Ealing Gazette

Monday, March 02, 2009 Sousa Running Out of Time?-
Monday, March 02, 2009
QPR Should give Sousa Time They Promised-
Daily Mail/Hatchet Man - QPR owners should give Sousa the time they were promising- - QPR’S owners have a chance over the next few months to prove they are not just trigger happy short-termists. - After going through managers at a frightening rate, Paulo Sousa was brought in last November claiming that he had been hired for the long term. Under pressure: Sousa has seen his side go on a poor run For some reason, the young Portuguese insisted he would be given time to turn Rangers into a force for the Premier League in his first job in club management. - Like Sousa’s title of first team coach rather than manager, it hardly seemed credible. He seemed naïve or deluded and already he is moving towards crunch time. Rangers have not won in the last five matches and lots of talk already about hopes for next season must have eroded Sousa’s standing. The best he can aim at now is the play-offs, and that is beginning to look like an outside shot. - QPR are six points off sixth place (and only nine above the relegation zone) and Sousa and his team must be making the owners’ trigger fingers itchy. - But if they are not going to continue to be another set of clichéd, super-rich and impatient owners, they have to stand by the rookie they appointed. Daily Mail
Daily Mail/Neil Hallam - Give Sousa a chance, pleads Delaney
- Paulo Sousa's chances of a long managerial reign at QPR can hardly have been enhanced by a barren run that has produced only two wins in 11 League games, but his players are adamant he should be given time to 'get his message across'. - Half a dozen managers have come and gone at QPR in the last 14 months but Republic of Ireland full back Damien Delaney, who headed in their first-half equaliser, insists he speaks for all the players in hoping the former Portugal star is not added to the disruptive procession of casualties. - 'All the lads like and respect the manager and want him to be given time to put his ideas and methods into practice,' he said. - Losing battle: Paulo Sousa is running out of time to convince QPR's bosses that he is the right man to guide them towards the Premier League after another loss - 'He arrived in mid-season, which is always difficult, and he has had the job of trying to create stability after a lot of upheaval. - 'This was only our second league defeat since early December and we all feel we are starting to get there as a team.' - Sousa said he was instructed to build solid foundations in order to challenge for promotion next season but he added: - 'We still have a chance of the play-offs this year. We have to go for it but it's difficult to be consistent while we are still building for the future.' Goals from Maltese international Peter Bogdanovic and Brazilian Anderson de Silva eased relegation fears for a cosmopolitan Barnsley side that included seven imports, but it was a Liverpool loan signing, 20-year-old Adam Hammill, who made the biggest impression. - The youngster, whose pace and searching crosses kept Rangers under pressure, has now played 70 games on loan at Dunfermline, Southampton, Blackpool and Barnsley while trying to persuade Liverpool he is worth a Premier League chance. - 'I have always dreamed of getting a standing ovation after running myself to a standstill in a red shirt and now it has come true, albeit at Barnsley rather than Anfield,' said Hammill. Daily Mail
The Times - Coca-Cola Championship round-up Barnsley 2 Queens Park Rangers 1- Barnsley pulled farther away from the relegation zone at the expense of Queens Park Rangers with victory at Oakwell. Anderson De Silva put the home side ahead just before the interval after Damien Delaney’s header had cancelled out Daniel Bogdanovic’s opening goal. Barnsley have now taken seven points from their past three games, while QPR, whose chances of a play-off place are fading, have not won in five. - “It was a good performance and I thought we thoroughly deserved the win,†Simon Davey, the Barnsley manager, said. “There was only one team in it in the second half and we were winning every challenge and gave them everything they could handle.†Paulo Sousa, the QPR manager, said: “It’s always disappointing when you want the three points but I’m glad because my players showed a lot of effort to win the game.†The Times

QPR's Vice Chairman on Club's High-Level Future Plans - UPDATED:Coming on QPR's Official Site - BHATIA EXCLUSIVE When Flavio Briatore became involved, we got excited. When Bernie Ecclestone became involved, we got very excited. When Lakshmi Mittal became involved, we thought someone was having us on! There's a buzz around Loftus Road like never before - a buzz which has been created by the aforementioned trio. And QPR World continues to bring you the thoughts of the people that matter. Amit Bhatia is the Vice-Chairman of QPR Holdings Limited, and the representative of the Mittal family. The son-in-law of Lakshmi - reportedly the fifth richest man in the world - it is fair to say when Amit talks, QPR fans listen. And so does the rest of English football. The potential is huge. But why have the Mittal family become involved in QPR? Are they really planning to compete with Chelsea? Do they intend to invest enough money to see the R's win the Premiership title? What's their message for R's fans who feared Chelsea had moved out of reach following the Russian revolution at Stamford Bridge? QPR World put these questions to Amit, and this exclusive interview will be available for all subscribers on Wednesday. QPR Skysports - Bhatia - QPR owners have a limit - Vice-chairman vows to spend money wisely Last updated: 2nd March 2008Amit Bhatia insists there is a limit to how much money Queens Park Rangers' multi-millionaire owners will invest in the club. Flavio Briatore, Bernie Ecclestone and Lakshmi Mittal have all injected cash into the Championship club with a view to taking QPR back into the Premier League. QPR Holding Limited's vice-chairman Bhatia is confident that Briatore and Ecclestone can help to realise the club's dream of top-flight football. But Bhatia also acknowledged that the new owners will not lavishly throw away money in pursuit of trying to match West London rivals Chelsea. "We didn't get involved in any of this to be second best, so we hope we are going to make it to the Premiership and, after that, the Champions League and who knows?" Bhatia told Sky Sports. We are committed to backing this club for however long it takes. We're involved with the best people with Flavio and Bernie, and we have a tremendous amount of respect for everybody involved here. "These two gentlemen know the business of sport. We'll spend money and it will require money to get to where we want to go, and we will spend it wisely. "Is there a limit? Yes, with everything there is a limit. "Are we willing to spend wisely and take the club to where it wants to go? Yes, absolutely. So the financial investment will come in, as results come in, as and when it's needed. "I think we will compete with Chelsea in the near future." Skysports Mittal's Representative Promises De Canio More Transfer Money - Sporting Life - DE CANIO PROMISED TRANSFER FUNDSAmit Bhatia, vice-chairman of QPR Holdings Ltd, insists there is money available for boss Luigi De Canio to work with. Bhatia, son-in-law of Lakshmi Mittal, who's family owns a 20 per cent stake in the club claims becoming involved with Rangers was a "super opportunity" and has "the best platform to go forward." "It was an idea that had been in the back of our minds and when this happened we kind of looked at Rangers as a super opportunity to be involved in a club that we believe has the best platform to go forward," he told the club's official website. "It's got magnificent fans, a super stadium, everything just seems to be right with QPR and we were very excited when Flavio (Briatore) and Bernie (Ecclestone) got involved and asked us to get involved "We bought 12 new players in the January transfer window and with Bernie and Flavio as partners I feel very secure in saying that we will spend money but we will spend it wisely. "We need to buy the best players and we will go out and buy them when the time is right. So it will it cost money and we are willing to do it."
