ON THIS DAY in 1970 February 21, 1970: QPR v Chelsea in the FA Cup Quarter Final at Loftus Road-One of those truly exciting pre-games for QPR....as QPR had just beaten Dave Mackay/Brian Clough/Derby County previous game - Chelsea managed by future QPR manager, Dave Sexton; and with future QPR players David Webb and John Hollins (and might-have been, QPR, Alan Hudson) ended up winning 4-2; Peter Osgood got a hatrick. Web got the other. Venables and Bridges scored for QPR. And Ron ("Chopper") Harris kept Rodney Marsh - who was aiming to into the England squad - totally quiet.. Chelsea went on to win the FA Cup! QPR's team: Kelly - Clement Mobley Hazell Gillard - Ferguson Venables Watson Bridges - Marsh Leach Chelsea's probable team (might be one or two differences) GK 1 Peter Bonetti RB 2 David Webb LB 3 Eddie McCreadie CM 4 John Hollins CB 5 John Dempsey CB 6 Ron Harris (c) RM 7 Alan Hudson CM 8 Peter Houseman CF 9 Peter Osgood CF 10 Ian Hutchinson LM 11 Charlie Cooke From Bushman Archives (which was posted below on this thread)And from Bushman last year qprreport.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=29729QPR 2 Chelsea 4 - From Chelsea Official Site- "..Several cup ties stand out too. Before the sixth round tie at Loftus Road in late February 1970, Chelsea had injury worries - a friendly against Borough Road Teacher Training College, of all teams, was arranged the Wednesday before and John Dempsey, Harris and Charlie Cooke came through. Terry Venables had augmented the old boy contingent in Shepherd's Bush and Rangers were ascendant again, but the 'remorseless locomotion' of the visitors and a hat-trick from Peter Osgood brought a 4-2 win to keep things all quiet on the western front. - Inside ten minutes Dave Webb had created and scored the opener, followed by Ossie's first, to ensure fans of Second Division Rangers had a very long afternoon to endure with their stars failing to shine. Rodney Marsh was so deep in Chopper's pocket it was still a surprise to see him turn up on TV's 'I'm A Celebrity' 37 years on." Chelsea Official Site via QPR Report Vital Football QPR on the QPR v Chelsea Game- "...In 1970, Chelsea and QPR were drawn to face each other in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Chelsea's Alan Hudson described it as a 'fantastic draw', due to the rivalry between the two clubs. To add further spice, QPR were fielding two former Chelsea players, Terry Venables and Barry Bridges, as well as their star striker, Rodney Marsh. - In an entertaining match, despite the poor pitch, Chelsea were 2-0 up within eight minutes thanks to Peter Osgood and David Webb, with a twice-taken Venables penalty putting Rangers back in contention. As Rangers threatened to equalise, Osgood scored twice more to complete his hat-trick and put the result beyond doubt, before Bridges grabbed a late consolation for his side. Chelsea would ultimately go on to win the cup that season." Vital Football QPR 21 February 1970

From www.11v11.com
21 February 1905Alf Common, Sunderland centre-forward, became the first player to be transferred for a £1,000 fee when he joined Middlesbrough. Ironically 'Boro had to let him join Arsenal on a free four years later because they could not afford a benefit for him. Began his League career with Sheffield United and won a Cup medal with them in 1902. He won two England caps in 1904 before his move to Sunderland and a further one in 1906 while at Middlesbrough. He was also a member of the Preston North End team which won the Second Division title in 1913-14. Died in April 1946. 21 February 1928The four Home Associations left F.I.F.A. after differences over broken time payments. They did not rejoin until 1946 and, as a result, none of the home countries competed in the first three World Cup competitions. 21 February 1934Archie Gardiner, who had previously played in the Scottish League with Heart of Midlothian, scored four goals on his Football League debut for Leicester City against Portsmouth. Despite this promising start he only had a brief Football League career with City and then Wrexham before he went to Ireland. 21 February 1953Joe Mercer, Arsenal captain and former England half-back, scored his first goal in League football for 17 years. 21 February 1961Bournemouth sacked their manager Don Welsh. His playing career began as an amateur with Torquay United in 1933. He soon turned professional and moved to Charlton Athletic early in 1935. He captained them when they won the Cup in 1947; his last season as a player. Played for England three times against continental opposition before 1939 and also in a number of wartime internationals. In all he played in 281 League matches and scored 48 goals. He also managed Brighton and Liverpool. 21 February 1972A crowd of 54,437 turned up to see Pele play in a friendly match in which Aston Villa beat Santos 2-1.

Bump...Nice memories of a nice (not great, but nice) QPR Team - even if the result ended badly...After the trauma of 1968/69, 1969/1970 - especially until the last 3 months, when we kind of slumped of promotion was a really good season...FA Quarter Finalists...League Cup Quarter Finalists: In both cases going out to the eventual winners..

Rangers Report"If I had a son to whom I wanted to show what ball control is all about, I would take him to see Rangers and Rodney. If I had a visitor whom I wanted to persuade about the fun and artistry of football, I would take him to Loftus Road and merely point. Marsh capsuled all his talents into a glorious opening 15 minutes - and Derby were lucky to escape a two or three goal battering." (Peter Blackman, EVENING STANDARD) "But Rangers deserved their win, specially for the wonders they produced in the first half when Marsh played some of the finest football of his career. Derby were repeatedly forced back as Marsh beat man after man from one side of the pitch to the other which left me crouched on a press seat a a yard from the touchline, feeling as dizzy as Mackay's lot." (John Moynihan, SUNDAY TELEGRAPH) "The result was right, for Rangers ran the normally so-professional County quite ragged. It was back to the glory, glory days at Loftus road with Rangers dominating 75% of a cup-tie that had thrills, spills and incidents galore." Yes Mac.
I'm nearly certain it was a typical Saunders bullying team. And nobody was better at doing that than Forbes!
