Sven-Goran Eriksson's spell as director of football at Notts County has ended after he was released from a contract that had more than four years to run. The news came after a consortium of investors bought out the majority shareholding of the League Two club's executive chairman, Peter Trembling.
Eriksson, the former England manager, is said to have come to an amicable agreement with Ray Trew, the former Lincoln City chairman who has emerged as an investor in County and is thought to be behind the takeover.
Trembling and the club's chief executive, Gary Townsend, will also leave.
"I am absolutely certain I can do something with this club," Trew told the Times. "But I might upset a few fans. The problem with this club is that it has been living beyond its means and that cannot go on. We have to build a club here that is secure for the future generations and that means we will have to make some serious decisions."
Trembling had claimed that he had several investors willing to put tens of millions of pounds into the club. However, that has not transpired and County are fighting a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs in the high court.
"The new owners of the club are not of the £25m+ ilk but they do know the football business," said Trembling in a statement. "Most importantly [they] have sufficient funds available to ensure the immediate survival of this football club and not least in view of our court case in less than two weeks' time.
"In addition they are intent and focused on promotion this season, which has been the major objective from day one."
