Dennis (Danny) Blanchflower Captain of the Tottenham Hotspur double winning team of 1961 is born in Belfast. He began his career at Glentoran and signed for Barnsley in April 1949. After 68 matches he left for Aston Villa in March 1951. He left Villa who he accused of a "lack of ambition" in December 1954 for Bill Nicholoson's Tottenham Hotspur. Here he won the Double in 1961, an FA Cup winners medal in 1962 and the European Cup Winners cup in 1963. He was footballer of the year in 1958 and 1961 and won 56 Caps for Northern Ireland.He briefly managed his country between 1976 and 1978 and Chelsea from December 1978 to September 1979. He died in 1993.

Non-League Wimbledon's brave F.A. Cup run came to an end when, in front of a 45,701 crowd at Selhurst Park, they lost 1-0 to Leeds United. A Johnny Giles shot was cruelly deflected past 'keeper Dickie Guy by one of his own players; Dave Bassett.

Ian Hutchinson, the Chelsea striker with the famous windmill-action long throw, retired from football. One of the unluckiest players in the game Hutchinson sustained two broken legs during his career along with two cartilage injuries which required operations, a broken arm and a broken toe. Not surprisingly he retired on medical advice.

Doncaster Rovers manager and ex-Leeds United captain Billy Bremner was fined �500 by the F.A. for making "foul and abusive" comments to officials after losing a match 2-1 to Swindon Town on December 3rd.

Marseille chairman Bernard Tapie, a former government minister, was released on bail after being charged with corruption. He was ordered to give up ownership of the club.
