Barnsley beat Fulham 8-4 in Division Two. Eaton(4), Brook(2) and Curran(2) netted for Barnsley while Elliot(2), Craig and Johnson replied for the Cottagers.

Arsenal beat Grimsby Town 9-1 in Division One. Jack(4), Lambert(3), Bastin and Hulme scored for the Gunners while Town's goal came from Swabey.

A record crowd of 32,384 saw Watford beaten by a Jack Rowley goal as visitors Manchester United won 1-0 in the F.A. Cup Fourth Round.

The Irish F.A. banned John Crossan for life following alleged irregularities in his signing for Bristol City. The ban was soon relaxed so that it applied to the four "Home Associations" only and Crossan joined Rotterdam Sparta. Ironically he played for Ireland against England in 1960. He subsequently transferred to Standard Liege until his ban was lifted altogether in September 1962 and he joined Sunderland a few weeks later. He was their leading scorer in the 1963-64 season when the club won promotion to Division One.

Manchester City's Denis Law had scored six goals in their F.A. Cup Fourth Round tie at Luton when the match was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch. To make matters worse Luton won the re-arranged tie 3-1.

Jackie Milburn, former Newcastle United and England centre-forward, was appointed manager of Ipswich Town. He joined Newcastle during the Second War as an outside-right but made his name in the post-war years as a centre. He played 354 League matches for the Magpies and in three successful Cup-winning sides (1951,1952 and 1955) scoring 178 goals in the League and 24 in the Cup. Milburn scored 10 goals in 13 internationals for England between 1949 and 1952. He left Tyneside in 1957 to become player-manager of Irish League team Linfield and won an Irish Cup-winners medal with them in 1961 as well as playing for the Irish League during his stay. He returned to England in 1962 to manage Yiewsley Town, now Hillingdon, in the Southern League.

Berwick Rangers beat Rangers with a Sammy Reid goal in the First Round of the Scottish Cup in front of a ground record crowd of 13,328. It was one of the most sensational results in the history of the competition and the first time Rangers had ever lost to Second Division opposition.

Graeme Souness was sacked as manager of Liverpool. While the former Rangers manager had won the F.A. Cup for the club two years earlier his overall record had fallen well short of the standards he himself had set whilst playing at Anfield.
