WAYNE Routledge admits that the prospect of a return to the Premier League with Newcastle United was the biggest draw in his switch to Tyneside.

The 25-year-old's whirlwind move was finalised on Tuesday morning as he penned a three-and-a-half-year deal at the club's North Tyneside headquarters before meeting with his new team-mates for the first time.

And Routledge, speaking exclusively to nufcTV, outlined his reasons for joining the black-and-white promotion push.

"As soon as I knew of the chance to come here I jumped at it," said the 25-year-old ahead of a potential debut against former club Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

"It feels great to here; it's a massive club with massive expectations, an unbelievable support and I just can't wait to get started.

"The main aim of the club is to get back to the Premier League and that is my aim, too.

"This club is all geared up for promotion and I'm here to help make that happen.

"There's a lot of quality in the squad with players who have played for their country, in the Champions League and have won a lot of honours.

"I just hope now to become a part of that and play my part."

Routledge: Happy with move

Wayne Routledge has expressed his delight at joining Newcastle and insisted it was an easy decision to make.

A number of clubs had been interested in signing the winger from Queens Park Rangers and it was the Magpies who won the chase as they secured his services on Tuesday morning.

Routledge, who has penned a three-and-a-half year deal at St James' Park, claims he did not hesitate to make the move.

"It is a hectic time. You get a call and you have to make quick decisions," he told Sky Sports News.

"Newcastle is Newcastle and everyone knows what it is about.

"It is a massive club with a massive tradition and the fan base is unbelievable, so as soon as I got the call the decision was made for me."

Routledge is relishing the prospect of playing his first game for the club and could make his debut in Wednesday's home clash with Crystal Palace.

He would love to carve his own name into Newcastle folklore alongside great wingers of the past such as David Ginola.

"There are true legends that have played here and they have a way they like to play. Hopefully I can follow in the footsteps of these players," he enthused.

"Sometimes you come here and you are in awe of the way the fans support their players.

"But I am on the right side now, in the black and white shirt, and I can't wait to get going."
