16 Years Ago Today - January 14, 2006, Ian Holloway chalked up his his final victory for QPR as QPR beat Southampton 1-0 at Loftus Road (Also Walcott's last game before off to Arsenal)..

QPR were 5 points out of a playoff spot.

After this match, QPR lost their next three games: (Luton, Away; Leicester at home; and Leeds, away. Then Holloway was placed on Gardening Leave.

Richard Langley's first-half penalty was the difference between QPR and Southampton as Nigel Quashie missed from the spot against his old club.

Danny Higginbotham felled Gareth Ainsworth after 21 minutes and Langley sent Paul Smith the wrong way.

Theo Walcott justified Arsenal's interest in him but the winger missed an equaliser when he shot over the bar.

Quashie was unlucky too as he was brought down under pressure from Steve Lomas but his kick hit the post.

QPR manager Ian Holloway:
"We didn't get close to Blackburn last week and that was definitely a lot better.

"They have got quality kids but we got in close, got in tight and got in their faces.

"We rode our luck a little bit but I enjoyed the performance. We looked like a proper team."

Southampton head coach George Burley:
"In the second half we got on top. We pinned them back and got the penalty after a good move but unfortunately we missed it.

"If we had knocked that in, I think we would have gone on to win the game.

"We've got a lot of hard work to do and it's not going to change overnight. It's going to take time."

Ian Holloway heaped praise on comeback king Steve Lomas, after the Hoops beat Southampton 1-0 at Loftus Road.
Returning to the Rangers line-up after a three month absence due to injury, Lomas was instrumental as Rangers jumped to 11th in the Championship.

"We played really well. I thought we were terrific from start to finish.
"Steve Lomas made a huge difference and we looked a lot more solid with him in the side. He's the voice that the team needs.
"He's a fantastic leader and alongside Richard Langley, the pair of them were absolutely fantastic.
"It was a big result for us and we worked very hard to get it.''
Rangers, who have now registered 10 points from their last four matches, are just five points adrift of the play-off's and with the addition of two new players in the last 24 hours, Ollie is in buoyant mood.

"We had a good balance today and that was key.
"We've got young kids knocking on the door and it's nice to have some genuine, young quality in the squad now.
"All my players worked their socks off today and I'm delighted with the three points.
"We've got a huge list of transfer targets. I'm really grateful to Blackburn for giving me Andy Taylor. He looks quality and the addition of the Polish lad, who can play right back or centre back, is a huge signing.
"He's 21, big, strong and quick and we've beaten a lot of clubs to his signature so I'm delighted.' QPR

The Blackpool Mourinho! The showers at Bloomfield Road may be running cold but Ian Holloway's wit and unique style make him hotBy Chris Wheeler

After pouring cold water on Kenny Dalglish's return to the Barclays Premier League, Ian Holloway admitted sheepishly that Blackpool had given the Liverpool players a cold shower, too.

'We had no hot water,' confessed Holloway. 'That's the third time. Now we've talked the chairman into buying the right type of boiler that won't break down because he wouldn't sanction that the other week.

'I don't want him to change. But trying to get the money out of my chairman's hand isn't easy. He's got such a grasp on it, he's like a fantastic gymnast on a high bar.'

It was vintage Holloway. Honest, colourful and entertaining. An audience with the Blackpool manager is never dull. Just like Jose Mourinho, another media darling of the Premier League who was never short of a well-chosen soundbite, his turn of phrase can light up any occasion.

Only Holloway isn't in charge of Chelsea or backed by Roman Abramovich's billions. He doesn't even have hot showers. Yet he has somehow revived one of English football's great old clubs, taking a team tipped for relegation to League One just over a year ago into the top half of the Premier League with games in hand. Imagine where Blackpool might be if they could afford undersoil heating.

You would never catch Holloway referring to himself as the Special One, but you cannot underestimate his achievements, the latest an unlikely double over Liverpool.

'We haven't seen the likes of this for 40-odd years and that's why it's so great,' he said. 'Life's all about confidence and there's no limit to human beings. In my lifetime we've put men on the moon. For Blackpool to keep going and doing these things, anything's possible.'
There is something about Holloway's eccentricity that has found a fitting home in this seaside town. Sat in black and tangerine club training gear - down to matching trainers - the son of Bristol looked and sounded Blackpool through and through.

'I believe that I'm meant to be here and I believe in fate in life,' he said. 'If it had gone wrong here I would probably have never have got another job.

'I saw a show in the gym the other day and there was John Sillett and Graham Taylor. They aren't managers any more and I thought, "Good gracious me, I'd better make hay while the sun shines because I'll be out of work" - and I was for a year.'

Holloway was a cast-off. But he returned with renewed zeal and has taken a group of players - many of whom were not wanted elsewhere - and galvanised them into a team who will run through brick walls for him. They still play with a smile. On Wednesday, Holloway could be seen urging his players to enjoy it.

'Neal Eardley can be a bit negative and when the ball bobbled over his foot I just laughed with him and told him he needed bigger feet,' said Holloway. 'I had a go at Stephen Crainey the other week because he showed disappointment when he gave a terrible ball. What about all his good passes?

'Life's all about encouragement. Otherwise it's no fun.

'There is no secret. It's just trying to enjoy what you do every day and some clubs aren't allowed to do that. Their fans won't let them. We bowl up and fans are booing their team in the warm-up. "Come on, it's only Blackpool". It's rubbish.
'I had a blank canvas and I could add what I wanted. We managed to get a load of people who weren't in a good situation, like myself, who needed it, and boy have they stepped up to the plate.'

Then Holloway is off again on a tangent, talking about the sometimes volatile relationship with chairman Karl Oyston. Yesterday he surprisingly admitted Oyston's email to the agent of transfer target Bradley Wright-Phillips had pushed the Plymouth striker towards Reading instead before he failed a medical.
'The agent showed it to the player who didn't feel wanted. It didn't look like we wanted him much and, to be fair, our chairman is like that.

'When you try to force him to do something, he panics and shouts. He shouted at me the other day and I said, "Oi, hang on a minute, don't talk to me like that!". But I've never felt supported like I do with him.'
Holloway was supporting Dalglish after spoiling the Scot's return to Premier League management with a 2-1 win. The Blackpool boss admitted that, out of respect, he saved his celebratory jig for his office before sharing a glass of wine with Dalglish.

He said: 'Kenny's not a miracle worker. Give him a chance. I saw what he did and I thought there was a vast improvement. 'Maybe some players should have a good look at themselves.'

He stopped short of calling them a shower, which, in the circumstances, was just as well.

Strange i,m not sure if i am the only one , but i sometimes find myself thinking what if that was us up there in the Prem with Ollie playing like Blackpool !
Shame he never got the chance to manage us when he had real funds !
Still we have Neil now!

I think its fair to say and I believe Holloway even admitted it that he ran out of ideas during his last few months at QPR and the football displayed was nearly as boring and dreadful as Sousa`s

He has stated since that his break from football gave him a new outlook on how the game should be played and he now employs a total attack form of the game

The man is doing wonders at Blackpool and all credit to him and I wish him all the future success but I honestly dont think he would have done well at QPR at that time even if he had funds available

We will probably never know for sure if Paladini had apprecaited what he had on hand and let IH stay as coach, but I am certain of one thing - I don't think we would have sunk to the levels that we did in the 4 plus years following his departure when we went through palyers and coaches as though there was no tomorrow and where relegation was the more likely outcome.

As a QPR fan who had to watch the last few months of Holloways football I like to think I am in the position of sying how bad it was and the truth is we will never know but at the time Holloway had taken QPR as far as he could which I am sure he has admitted since

We can all look through rose tinted specs and say ah but he would have been brillient if he had more time but the fact is that we were awful then

As I have stated before I wish the man every success and really admire what he has done and continues to do at Blackpool but it was the right decision for him to leave QPR when he did in my opinion

I love Olli, always have had, always will, however, got to say, me and my mates all thought they he had done as much as he could. He seemed to be losing the plot completely, and signed gawd knows how many loans and didn't he pick up a keeper at a service station on his way to an away game? My memory is shyte but I thought he'd had enough.

Where he has been lucky at Blackpool is the fact that he has not been given money, he's a kid in a candy shop with it and he's said so himself many times.

Five years ago, bugger me! Time flies and we've pissed away too much money but we finally have a chance, I just hope they don't chuck it away for "a few dollars more" !!!

Just to add, in the game mentioned in the original post, bar one run down the right, Matty Rose had Walcott in his pocket the whole game.
