RANGERS BOSS, Gerry Francis, has swooped to sign Dutch striker, Samuel Koejoe, for a fee of £250,000.
Koejoe makes the switch to Loftus Road from Austrian club, Salzburg, but has signed for the club too late to make his debut in tomorrow's home clash against Barnsley.
Instead, he will return to Austria over the weekend, and jet back into London on Monday to link up with his new team-mates.
And manager, Francis, was delighted with the capture of the 25-year-old, whose primary position is as a striker, although he was bought with the main intention of strengthening the squad.
He said: "We have managed at the third attempt to sign a player and I am very pleased that we have signed a player, although no-one from round here will have heard of him I'm afraid.
"He has signed too late to be involved this weekend so he is going back to Austria this evening and we will see him again on Monday.
He fitted in well with our price range and wage structure, and we are delighted in this situation that we have managed to find someone.
"Samuel's a very young player in terms of football, and he is very much like Les Ferdinand in terms of coming in to the game late, and he has got a lot of potential.
"He is someone you can work with, he is quick, good in the air, got two good feet, and it is going to be a big challenge for him coming to London, but he is a determined boy and obviously wants to do well."
God, he was terrible! I remember gerry signed him after watching a video of him playing. I also remember gerrys comments about his first training session with the squad and how Koejoe was so knackered he was "blowing out of his a***hole".
ESPN - riday, August 24, 2001 Koejoe released by cash-strapped QPR
Dutch striker Sammy Koejoe has been forced to leave QPR because the club could not afford to pay him. Koejoe has been released by Rangers and is free to move on after the club decided his wages were too high. Manager Ian Holloway said: 'It's nothing personal and we're sorry he's going, but we just couldn't afford to keep paying him.
'Letting him go means I might be able to bring in some new faces in the future, and we have cover there now.'
Holloway will hand the goalscoring duties this season to youngster Leroy Griffiths, who is currently injured, and has cut-price forwards Dave McEwen and Ebeli M'Bombo to call on.
He said: 'Leroy has been fantastic since he came. He's a bubbly character and keeps telling me he'll score 60 goals this season!'
SAMMY LEAVES LOFTUS ROAD By Graeme Bailey |
QUEENS PARK RANGERS have parted company with striker Sammy Koejoe.
The 27-year-old moved to Loftus Road in November 1999 for £250,000 from Austrian side Salzburg.
However, he started just 10 games during the near two years and has now decided to leave.
Rangers will be happy to see Koejoe off the wage bill as he constituted 12 percent of manager Ian Holloway's entire budget.
The club are now expected to make a number of free transfer/loan signings over the next few weeks.
