: 26 September 2009
By Mark Wood
How the Hatters rated
Mark Tyler: 8 – So close to saving the penalty and a vital stop at the death. Assured throughout.
Claude Gnakpa: 7 – Got forward well and battled hard, but went to sleep more than once and was maybe fortunate not to be dismissed. Subbed early.
Alan White: 8 – Pillar of strength at the back, won everything in the air and very unlucky with the penalty.
George Pilkington: 8.5 – Several hugely important interventions just in the nick of time.
Freddie Murray: 8.5 – Really took the game to Cambridge down the left flank, especially after Hatch's sending off.
Adam Newton: 7.5 – Should have given Luton the lead, but performed manfully despite being under the weather.
Rossi Jarvis: 8.5 – In a rich vein of form. Fabulous goal, good set pieces and was tireless in midfield.
Asa Hall: 8 – In and out of the game at times, but battled hard and showed plenty of quality when needed.
Jake Howells: 8.5 – Gave Town some real width on the left, was full of running and netted his maiden senior goal.
Kevin Gallen: 9 – Ploughed a lone furrow up front like a thoroughbred. Held the ball up, brought players in and almost had a hat-trick.
Liam Hatch: 6 – Looked powerful and strong while on the pitch, but let his team down with two silly bookings that resulted in an early bath.
Callum Reynolds (sub): 7 – Coped well after Gnakpa had been withdrawn and played a full part in Town's win.
Shane Blackett (sub): 7.5 – Put in a tireless shift on the left when he came on and was a real danger in the air.
Tom Craddock (sub): 7 – His pace caused the U's plenty of problems and was a willing runner after his introduction.

3 - 4
An incredible and heroic display from 10 man Hatters saw them come from two goals down to earn all three points in a seven goal thriller at the Abbey Stadium.
After Cambridge had led 2-0 against the run of play at interval following goals from Courtney Pitt and a penalty from Chris Holroyd the Town looked down and out.
It was even more remarkable given that the Hatters had striker Liam Hatch sent-off two minutes before half-time for a second bookable offence.
The Town's first half performance didn't warrant them to be behind but at the start of the second half they came out all guns blazing and Kevin Gallen reduced arrears when tapping from close range following Rossi Jarvis' corner three minutes into the second half.
Twelve minutes later it was all square when a Gallen and Jarvis beautiful combined to see the later plant a curling shot beyond Cambridge goalkeeper Danny Potter.
Unbelievably a minute later the Hatters took the lead when Jake Howells tapped home the loose ball from six yards after Potter had parried Gallen's strike.
Yet it wasn't over by a long shot and the hosts got back on level terms themselves four minutes later when Holroyd notched his second of a frantic afternoon when tucking home the loose ball after Wayne Hatswell's header had rebounded off the crossbar.
But back came the Town and they earned their three points with a penalty of their own 15 minutes from time when Gallen slotted past Potter from 12 yards after substitute Shane Blackett had his shirt pulled.
Cambridge United 3 (Pitt 20, Holroyd 33 (pen), 65)
Luton Town 4 (Gallen 48, 75 (pen) Jarvis 60, Howells 61)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FULL TIME Cambridge United 3-4 Luton Town. All the reaction to come! What a performance!
90 mins - We've got five added minutes here. Can we hold on?
87 mins - Almost 4-4 as Tyler somehow diverts the ball behind and it's Cambridge's first corner of the afternoon. Incredible. He didn't know too much about it. Heart-stopping stuff!
85 mins - Five minutes left and the Hatters are defending superbly against the now as expected Cambridge onslaught. Every man has been superb this for the Hatters today.
82 mins - Change from Mick as Gallen goes off to a terrific reception from the Town following and is replaced by Tom Craddock.
79 mins - 11 minutes left - is there more to come form either side? I wouldn't rule it out.
75 mins - GOAL! Cambridge 3-4 HATTERS - We're back amongt the goals - the fifth of the half! The referee sees a shirt pull on Blackett and Gallen sends Potter the wrong way to calmly restore their lead. Absolutely incredible!
74 mins - PENALTY TO LUTON
65 mins - GOAL CAMBRIDGE 3-3 Hatters - Would you believe it? Cambridge level things up with the third goal in five minutes as Holroyd grabs his second of the afternoon after Hatswell had seen his header come back off the crossbar.
62 mins - Absolutely incredible!!! I've not described the goals yet. Ok, firstly for the level, Jarvis played a one-two with Gallen and curled a beautiful goal past Potter into the top right corner. Then a minute later Gallen latches on to a misplaced defensive header to drive a shot that is saved by Potter but the loose ball falls to Howells who taps home in the open net to complete an incredible turnaround!
61 mins - GOAL ! Cambridge 2-3 HATTERS - Unbelievable!!!
60 mins - GOAL!!! Cambridge 2-2 HATTERS! Absolutely sensation from the Hatters it's 2-2 - the 10 men have got themselves on level in terms with a super goal.
58 mins - Oh that was so close to 2-2! Gallen works a yard of space to drive a low shot that agonisingly wide of Potter's right-hand post following good work from Newton and Jarvis down the right.
56 mins - Not much goalmouth action but then Gleeson and Beesley combine which he's the latter shoot straight at Tyler. Comfortable for the Town stopper.
51 mins - The Hatters have started brightly but there's nearly trouble as Gnakpa is unends Holroyd. He was on a booking too so he was a lucky boy. Callum Reynolds is on in his place as Mick Harford decides he can't afford to have nine men on the pitch.
49 mins - Gallen's goal has ended the Town's drought in front of goal on their travels extending back to Gallen's strike at Salisbury. 291 minutes to be exact.
48 mins - GOAL! Cambridge 2-1 HATTERS - From the resulting corner from Jarvis from the left White gets above everyone to knock the ball down and there's Gallen there first to react to smash the ball into the roof of the net from two yards and they're back in it. Get in!
47 mins - The attendance has just been given to me here: 4,870 including 1,728 from Bedfordshire. Just as I type that Murray maurauds down the left-flank and wins a corner...
46 mins - Cambridge get the second half underway this half as 10-man Town kick towards their travelling fans behind the goal. It looks as though Gallen is playing a lone striker's role.
45 mins HALF-TIME Cambridge United 2-0 Luton Town. It's been a bit of a shock to the system. A lot has gone on. It's the fourth sending off in 12 games but it's harsh on Hatch. His first yellow was for talking back to the referee after the penalty decision but can have no complaints for his second. But the Town have played well and much better than at Wrexham. Cambridge have had two chances...Check back in 15 mins for the second half.
43 mins - OFF - Well it just gets better and better doesn't it? Hatch is red carded for his second bookable offence.
41 mins - Nice one-touch stuff from Cambridge involving the two goalscorers almosts gets Pitt in for his second and the U's third but Tyler is quick to the winger to the ball and danger is over.
38 mins - That could have conceivable been a penalty to the Town but it's not given as Jarvis is bodychecked in the box running onto Hatch's knockdown. It's just not going the Town's way at the minute.
33 mins- GOAL CAMBRIDGE 2-0 Hatters. Unbelievable. Well it's 2-0 to Cambridge but was that a pen? White is adjudged to have upended Anthony Tonkin but it looked like he won the ball. Holroyd steps up and nets his 10th goal of the campaign despite a good effort from Tyler who got a good hand to the ball.
32 mins - PENALTY TO CAMBRIDGE
31 mins - Another effort on goal by the visitors as Hall does well to cut inside his marker down the right to cross for Gallen who's header is saved by Potter.
29 mins - More good stuff from the Town. This time Gnakpa gallops down the right-wing with a high cross that his headed on by Hatch. It looks like the chance has gone by Cambridge can't clear the danger and the ball falls to Jarvis who hits a great left-footed shot that arrows narrowly over Potter's crossbar. Unlucky. Great technique by the midfielder.
27 mins - It's certainly been a frustrating afternoon so far for the Hatters. Referee Madley has given the hosts a number of soft free-kicks. Nine in fact.
24 mins - Good response from the Town. Gallen and Hatch are doing well up top and they almost carve open the Cambridge defence open with neat interplay but Potter is there to prevent the danger. Then a backpass is underhit which Hatch nearly closes down and then Gallen is deemed to have handballed a Hatch knock-down.
20 mins - GOAL CAMBRIDGE 1-0 Hatters - Well that's a kick in the teeth. It's the first real chance for the U's after the Town had enjoyed the opening 20 minutes. Pitt is the scorer - typically against his former side - and it's all too easy. Mark Beesley finds the unmarked Pitt inside the Hatters' penalty area and he fired a cool finish past Tyler.
15 mins - Howells is really getting into this game and this time he sPoons an effort way over Potter's crossbar after the ball had dropped to him on the edge of the penalty area. Bright play from the Town but can we make it count?
14 mins - More good play from the Hatters and this much better. This time its down the left-flank as Howells does well to find Newton with a square pass 15 yards out but the winger can't find the target with his sidefooted effort.
11 mins - Lovely play on the break from the Town as Newton finds Gallen who in turn plays a great pass down the right flank for Gnakpa who runs at Cambridge defence before laying the ball of to Gallen who tries his luck with a shot from outside the area that flies over Potter's crossbar. Encouraging play from the Hatters.
8 mins - Early looking for Hatters as Gnakpa picks up a yellow from referee Robert Madley. The Town are certainly snapping at the heels of the Cambridge players.
7 mins - Great chance for Cambridge with Pitt and Holroyd involved. Pitt slips the striker through on goal and looks to square the ball across goal. His pass only finds Pilkington who guides the ball goalwards. It looks like the ball is going in off the Town skipper but Tyler reacts smartly and saves the defender's blushes and it remains goalless.
6 mins - The Town are enjoying a good early spell here and after Gallen feeds Hall who tries his luck from distance with a shot from 25 yards that goes wide of Potter's right-hand post.
4 mins - First touch by either goalkeeper and it's Danny Potter in the Cambridge goal that is test first this afternoon when saving Howells' hooked shot from the left-hand edge of the penalty area after the hosts had failed to clear the danger after Hatch had caused confusion in the area following a long throw.
2 mins - Definitely a 4-4-2 out there from Mick. The regular back four and goalkeeper of Tyler, Gnakpa, Pilkington, White and Murray with Rossi Jarvis and Asa Hall in the centre of midfield with Adam Newton and Jake Howells on either flank and Liam Hatch and Kevin Gallen up front.
1 min- The Hatters get us underway here at the Abbey. It's a cracking atmosphere and I'm tucked away in a press box so it's probably a lot louder out there. Come on Luton.
14:56 - The two teams are out on the pitch. Cambridge are all in yellow and the Hatters are in their white shirts and shorts and navy blue socks. The Hatters following is in fine voice as they give their boys a huge round of applause after the two teams complete shaking hands with each other.
14:51 - The ground is filling up and sun is out. The Town have tasted success on this ground since way back in 1980. Let's hope we can get back to winning ways this afternoon! Come on you Hatters!
14:27 TEAM NEWS:
This might be the return of 4-4-2. The major news is that striker Tom Craddock drops to the bench with Jake Howells coming into his place. Howells on the wing in a 4-4-2 with Liam Hatch and Kevin Gallen up-front? Who knows. We'll know more when the game gets underway.
As for Cambridge they have the division's leading goalscorer in striker Chris Holroyd up-front and U's boss Martin Ling also calls on former Luton winger Courtney Pitt for the first time this season.
