September 1972 - Stan Bowles joined QPR Geat day. I was sure. I'm sure a number of others were as well 4 September 16, 1972Stan Bowles made his debut at home to (pre-Brian Clough's) Nottingham Forest, September 16, 1972, two or three days after signing from Carlisle for a club-record 110,000 pounds. Bowles, wearing from that very first game, HIS #10 shirt. Within an hour, he had made the first goal for Don Givens...and scored the second...as Gordon Jago's QPR won 3-0 (Andy McCulloch getting the third). And QPR, of course, went on to promotion. Almost six months to the day since we had sold Rodneeee Marsh QPR's team that day. Parkes - Clement Evans Hazell Watson - Venables Francis Busby - Givens Bowles Mcculloch - Sub: Salvage From Bowles' autobiography "Stan The Man""I was 23 years old when I joined Queens Park Rangers in September 1972, for a then club record fee of 112,000 pounds... "Rodney had made the No. 10 shirt his own, and, since he moved, no one wanted to tough the thing....The shirt thing didn't seem a big deal to me. I hadn't really heard of Rodney Marsh. So I just shrugged and said: "If no one wants it, I'll wear it."... "... s luck would have it, I scored one and made another for Don Givens in my first game - against Nottingham Forest on September 16th, 1972. We won 3-0, and the fans seemed to take to my style of play; which, to them, was a bit like Rodney's"(Stan The Man, page 33)
Seven Years later, Bowles finally left QPR - ironically for Nottingham Forest (by then managed by Brian Clough).

As a 57 year old, totally 'normal' bloke, I LOVE Stan Bowles!
Although my support for QPR started in the Marsh era, Bowles for me was always my number one. In my eyes, even if he had a bad game he was still my hero. Was then, still is now.
Used to travel to all the away games at a time when you could get tickets from players just by asking nicely. Stan and his betting partner Don Shanks were always good for a ticket, they wanted nothing for them only perhaps the result of the 2-15 at Catterick.
I have to admit that getting a ticket from Shanks you were always in with the chance of sitting next to ex-Miss World I think her name was Mary Stavin. As an 18 year old having sat next to her down at Bristol I didn't wash for a week. What did she see in Don, she was beautiful!
Those were the days when you could have a laugh with players, they spoke to you. They didn't leave the team bus looking at the phones to avoid eye contact or wearing headphones.
You could go to the training ground up at the Polish war memorial and watch them train. You could have a laugh with them after training, you could stand behind the goal and pass the ball back to them when they over hit a pass.
I miss those days and I miss Stan Bowles.

Poor quality video
February 19, 1974
One of the great QPR games: QPR played Coventry at Loftus Road in the replay of the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. With a couple of QPR players injured;moving into injury time with extra time set. A free kick to QPR. Stan Bowles took it. Ball in the net. Final Whistle blew immediately: QPR 3 Coventry 2.
QPR moved into the Quarter Final of the FA Cup for the first time, where they had a seemingly relatively easy draw against Leicester City....Unfortunately...!
The QPR team: Parkes - Hazell Mclintock Mancini Clement - Venables Leach Francis, Thomas Bowles Givens.
