Smyth is over rated by so many QPR fans. Yes, he has great pace and scored a fantastic goal on his debut. He had a brilliant cameo debut appearance for AS which many of us saw live on TV. He scored on his debut for NI. However, he has done little for QPR since. If he was good enough to thrive in the Championship we wouldn't loan him out. He scored 3 goals in 16 apps for L1 Accrington Stanley. Not exactly prolific in a lower league. Now, he may develop into a seriously good player at Championship level - but he's obviously not there yet.
Trouble is, that appears not to be obvious to a lot of QPR fans.
I would expect that we are confident of getting strikers in in the very near future.

To be fair, he's been on loan for a lot of that time and wasn't fancied by McClaren so it's small wonder he's not done much since. Debatably Championship-standard players do go on loan to League One when getting games is the key priority, which for him was super important.
It also doesn't mean that a player who has been down there on loan one year isn't good enough for the Championship the next season - seeing as, shy of shunting a % wages off the books (which clearly isn't the case here), you send a player away to develop further. Playing League One football week in and out does wonders for a lot of players. It isn't sure-fire success, but it is a positive, competitive learning curve. That's why loads of clubs loan their young players there.
I'm not saying he's amazing, I think he has a lot to prove at this level. But going out on loan or not seeing much of him under a manager who lumped loads of our young players on loan, doesn't prove much.

From the Offie on the Smyth loan and our search for strikers www.qpr.co.uk/news/club-news/paul-smyth-joins-wycombe-wanderers-on-loan/Paul Smyth joins Wycombe Wanderers on loanGeorge Jones @qpr PAUL Smyth has joined League One club Wycombe Wanderers on a season-long loan deal. The Northern Irishman – who spent the second half of last season on loan with Accrington Stanley – has made 19 QPR appearances, having made his debut in 2017. Manager Mark Warburton has explained the decision to allow Smyth to head out on loan. He said: "Paul came to the club, settled in well and made a very positive impression. However, he now needs to continue his development by playing regular first-team football and in Gareth and Wycombe we have the perfect environment for this to happen. "Yes, he could benefit from being around the first-team squad here and having occasional pitch time but our focus has to be on having Paul develop as swiftly as possible and there is no better teacher than playing the game itself. "We will work closely with Gareth, someone we trust and respect very much, to ensure that Paul's development is closely monitored, with the focus on being to have Paul return to the club at the end of the Season a better player for the experience." With regards to the current search for strikers, Warburton was keen to emphasise the amount of work being done by the football department.
He said: "I fully appreciate that some of our supporters will be concerned at the evident lack of attacking options, but it is vitally important that we secure players who represent good value for the club and who possess the quality and desire to play for QPR.
"It is a highly-competitive market place and we must strive to work in a financially prudent manner that allows for the long-term health of the club to flourish. Please rest assured that everyone within the football department is working tirelessly to ensure we enjoy a successful summer window, with strikers being at the very top of our shopping list."

A snippet from the end of the WLS article on the Smyth loan that I found interesting. I wonder who at Arsenal they could be enquiring about? www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/football-mark-warburton-paul-smyth-190719Enquiries have also been made about several youngsters at Premier League clubs – in particular Arsenal, where Warburton’s right-hand man Neil Banfield spent 21 years on the coaching staff.

I know there was interest from Charlton for Arsenal Striker Eddie Nketiah, however he is close to breaking into their first team so they might not let him go to the Championship. Not sure if we were in for him but certainly a good prospect. However, he is on the current Arsenal tour and scored against Bayern.

I think they said on SSN when they showed the goals from Arsenal-Bayern that he is likely to be loaned to us or Charlton.
I think Arsenal feel he needs a season playing first team football. I would like to think that we would be preferred to Charlton!

As I said he's obviously not good enough to thrive in the Championship now. Warburton's comments back this up. Maybe - I'm mostly just splitting hairs to be honest. It's pre season and it's something to do haha. Was just disagreeing on the principle that a player going on loan to league one means he definitely ain't good enough. Sometimes managers don't fancy particular players, sometimes they could be risked to do a job but there's congestion in their position on the pitch and sometimes (particularly new managers) prefer players they trust and are more familiar with. Just don't think it's cut and dry. To me, it is probably an asset management thing. Warburton's comments are that he needs games - he may well have played a role off the bench here and could do a job for him, but at this point, he is going to develop better playing every week, competitively, for long periods of time. You can near assure that in League One by pairing him with a 'friendly' club and manager in Ainsworth. The results of that should be that we have a more sellable asset come the end of it - which, sadly or otherwise, is what we want for every player we own. Maybe that turns out to be a player who develops enough to be a regular championship first teamer, maybe it turns out to be a player who's a very good league one player - sellable either way and it could go either way. I'm the first to agree that some of our fans do have blinkers on about him. For what it's worth, I think he did really well under Ollie at this standard, proved his potential and deserves credit for that. But also agree that, maybe because he's got so many nice qualities that fans like (seems genuinely happy to be here, gives 100% every game, tears around the pitch without fear - we seem to break out into applause at LR every time a player zooms after a lost cause like Mackie did!), people think he is the second coming.

So once again we rely on loanees, hmmmm I'm not a big fan of loanees in general as it's 'dead money' in many ways. But if a loanee like Amos is available, motivated and more affordable than an equivalent quality DM and that helps assure our league status and ability to push on? Who knows. Either way, it is a pre-season away at Oxford Utd. Don't think it proves we are relying on anyone for anything.

So once again we rely on loanees, hmmmm/ Well unless you have a spare 10 million or so in your back pocket to buy some players for the club what else are we supposed to do?. If we do not have the money we cannot spend it and I really think it is time fans woke up to that fact. Loanees are not all bad - look what Abraham did for Villa last season. Anyway re the "2 games in and not convinced yet' comment we are actually 3 pre-season games in - nothing more and nothing less. The transfer window is still open, we do not know who if anyone else will sign up, and these are practice games with multiple substitutions. If fans are going to judge the team and signings on the friendlies played so far it just goes to show how ridiculous things have become. In fact I'm surprised there are not calls for a new manager yet - although I'm sure if we lose at Stoke certain people will be on that bandwagon before the end of August

Indeed. Pre money, our fans hated what Chelsea did( well, we hate whatever Chelsea do) but we slammed them for buying success. We then got some money, and completely spunked the whole lot and some. Got the biggest fine in FFP to date. Have almost got all the freeloaders off the wage list...amnd are having to start all over again as a football club. Loans/free transfers / give aways/ young talent through ranks .....thats what we will be now doing for x amount of years. The sooner fans get on board ...the better

I agree with what you say but I didn't state that because PS is being loaned out to a L1 club that he's not good enough for the CH. I suggested that because he probably isn't good enough to thrive in the CH that he was being loaned out. If MW felt he was good enough he would be prepared to start him regularly rather than just use him as an impact player off the bench on occasion. Or, it may be that MW might prefer to play him in a different formation other than in the 4-2-3-1 he seems to be going to use.

If a Furlong sale happens and gives us the cash to get in a striker or 2 I am not too fussed.
Get them young, develop them through, sell them on and start again - that's the name of the game for us to survive financially - as it was for many years in our history before the money wasters arrived at Loftus Road and lost their cash.
This is nothing new to the fans who have been around a while and seen it all before.

Furlong is a very good CB but an average RB. He wants to play RB which, I think, will be difficult for him here. Rumour has it that Dujon Sterling from Chelsea is being lined up as a loan replacement, so it genuinely doesn't look like they're relying on Rangel for the season. Although, this will be the obligatory Twitter meltdown default position for our insightful fans, of course. That and how Furlong is the next Maldini and obviously worth at least £15 million and the club are selling him cheap. etc etc....

I guess it is where the club is at present. No not the next Maldini but good in the air and a player with pace at the back which we lacked last year when he was injured. In his absence it will possibly be a whole new defence with signings that we really have no idea yet if they will be up to Championship standard.

We have a pretty good idea about Rangel, Leistner, Hall, Babet Wallace and maybe Manning Masterson and Ball at a minimum. With that list I can see how Furlong is expendable at 1.5 million. The new keeper appears to be a step up from Lumley as well. If I am correct we substituted the whole back 4 at Oxford at the weekend and all did ok. The questions are 1. who will be in the starting line up and 2. how long will it take for them to knit into a defensive unit. Plus we need to think about who will be in front of them on defensive midfield. We Leaked too many silly goals last season and the new boss is obviously trying to address that so we can build from the back. Now all we need is some more fire power up front imo.

From The Independent www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/chelsea-transfer-news-dujon-sterling-rumours-gossip-latest-a9015536.htmlChelsea transfer news: Dujon Sterling close to joining QPR on season-long loanExclusive: The 19-year-old full-back is set to head back out on loan again after spending last season at Coventry Tom Kershaw @trlkershaw Chelsea starlet Dujon Sterling is close to sealing a season-long loan move to Queens Park Rangers. The 19-year-old right-back spent last season at Coventry and The Independent understands that he will now head back out on loan again with first-team opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge behind Cesar Azpilicueta, Davide Zappacosta and fellow academy graduate Reece James. Sterling made 40 appearances for the Sky Blues last season and QPR have been keen to add him to their Championship squad for a number of weeks after completing a loan deal for Tottenham midfielder Luke Amos. The teenager made his first-team debut under Antonio Conte in September 2017, when he replaced Zappacosta in the latter stages of the club’s League Cup third-round win against Nottingham Forest, having being promoted to the U23s while still 16 years old. Sterling signed a long-term deal keeping him at Chelsea until the summer of 2022 shortly after making that maiden first-team appearance.

From Sky Sport's Transfer Centre www.skysports.com/transfer-centreQPR have accepted a bid of £1.5m from West Brom for defender Darnell Furlong. QPR and Sheffield Wednesday are both interested in Rotherham centre-half Clark Robertson. Robertson has two years left on his contract

With respect do we really have a good idea of how this defence will handle a season in the championship? Rangel and Hall were injured for large parts of last season. Leistner, whilst giving us leadership qualities was dropped at various stages and looks slow when up against any pacey striker. The others are all new signings so how can we know how they will perform at this level? When we signed Bidwell and Lynch they both had a track record of Championship football - sadly at Rangers they did not perform as well as they had at their previous clubs. That said, I do like the look of the loan signing from Chelsea - let's hope he has a similar spell as Karl Walker did at the R's. Re the keepers I like Lumley - but again we don't really know how the others will perform at this level. I really hope you are proved right with your confidence in the defence - I just don't think we are in a position yet to know.
