Flashback 5 Years today: Connor Washington Joins QPR www.qpr.co.uk/news/archive/qpr-sign-striker-conor-washington/QPR - QPR SIGN STRIKER CONOR WASHINGTON QPR announce signing of Conor Washington from Peterborough United Striker signs three-and-a-half year deal at Loftus Road 23 year-old available to feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers fixture this weekend QPR have completed the signing of Conor Washington from Peterborough United. The 23 year-old has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal at Loftus Road, after Rangers agreed an undisclosed fee with the League One club for the striker’s services Washington has scored 15 goals for Posh this season, with 14 in his last 19, and the in-form front-man expressed his delight at clinching a switch to the Championship with QPR, commenting: “As a striker, having someone like Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink here as manager was a massive pull for me. He's been there, seen it and done it at the very highest level and that can only benefit me as a player. “I feel I've improved as a player over the last 18 months. My mentality has changed and I'm a better player for it. But I also feel there's a lot more to come from me and I believe I can properly go on to fulfil my potential at QPR. “I know I've still got a long way to go in my development but I'm relishing the chance to prove my worth. I've proved I can do it at every level I've played at so far, so I don't see any reason why I can't do it here with QPR. “I can’t wait to pull on the QPR shirt and show the fans what I’m capable of.” Washington becomes Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s first signing as QPR boss and the R’s gaffer is pleased to have added to his attacking options. He told http://www.qpr.co.uk: “Conor is a player I’ve admired for a while now, so I’m delighted he’s agreed to join us. “I’ve seen first-hand what he’s capable of and his all round game has always impressed me. Of course he’s still got a lot to learn – he’s by no means the finished article – but I am convinced he has what it takes to succeed at a higher level with us. “He’s raw, he’s hungry, he’s determined. He’s quick and he’s versatile, which is important. He can play on his own up there; in a two; or on the shoulder of another striker. He’s got great pace to get in behind and that’s something we need when you look at our current attacking options. “Importantly, he’s got the right mentality to be a QPR player. He is relishing the opportunity to play for this club and he wants to wear the shirt with pride.” Washington, who will wear the number 9 shirt, is eligible to make his QPR debut in this weekend’s live Sky Sports showdown against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Loftus Road on Saturday lunchtime.

With (allegedly) 10 championships sides after him, there could be many a problem in getting this over the line, with sides offering higher transfer fees, better personal terms - and of course, a more realistic prospect of Premier League football next year.
At 23 years old and having scored 15 goals this season, he does seem an exciting prospect.

Just the type of player we should be going for , not washed up players like Crouch , hopefully get Bamford from Chelsea . Gayle would be too expensive .

Haven't seen him but agree this is the pedigree of player we should be looking for...with Bamford to follow on loan I'm guessing

Will he be a Luongo, performing for us, or a Gladwin and loaned back to a League 1 club?

like the look of this lad ,from what I have seen of him looks a natural goal scorer ,started out playing for St Ives then progressed to playing for Newport County then snapped up by Posh , a bit like Charlie playing in lower leagues if we do get sign him and he does as well as Chaz did then I will be well pleased ,and we get Bamford as well it has been a good bit of business IMO

West London Sport QPR set to complete signing of Washington By West London Sport 19/01/2016 QPR expect to complete the signing of Peterborough striker Conor Washington later today. Rangers have agreed a fee of £2.5m for the 23-year-old, who could make his debut against Wolves on Saturday. A number of other Championship clubs are keen on him but Washington has indicated that he intends to go through with a move to Loftus Road. He has scored 15 goals this season and 34 in total for Peterborough since being signed from Newport County two years ago. QPR want to add to their squad during this month’s transfer window, with manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink particularly keen to sign a left-back and at least two strikers. www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/qpr-set-to-complete-striker-signing-wls-football

Like Gladwin proven at League 1 level but will he prosper at Championship level or will he fail and be loaned out to a League 1 club? Only time will tell.

Bamford yes. Good..... Washington no.
We should have learned our lesson from the summer. He is third tier. Why the hell do we keep signing these lower league players.
Hope I am proved wrong but my gut instinct says otherwise

Why the hell do we keep signing these lower league players. Austin - formerly of Swindon and lower. Sir Les... Hayes Washington's young enough to continue developing - I'm sure JFH can teach him a thing or two. Better option than an ageing Crouch.

Hope I am proved wrong but my gut instinct says otherwise At the end of the day its a gamble. Its quite a bit of money for a League One player but we payed the same for Loungo and for me its worth the gamble as these players will get better the more they play in our division. Gladwin hasnt exactly done much for 1.5 million but he doesnt get any game time, just loaned back to league one. I get more scared when we buy players from non league, like Hewitt etc . Crystal Palace spent about 5 million on Gayle when they bought him from Peterboro. Forest paid 6 million when they bought Assombalonga from Peterboro. Why shouldnt we pay 2.5 to Peterboro ? Im ok with it.

True what you say AshdownRanger...but could you trust this regime with their appalling transfer strategy this season to tell Dross from a promising Diamond?
Everyone knows by now that their record aint good!
Yes Harr you are right it is a gamble but this current lot are not good with the dice

Everyone knows by now that their record aint good! Yes Harr you are right it is a gamble but this current lot are not good with the dice Good goalscorers are easier to scout than midfielders. Plus JFH has seen a lot of this kid before he came to manage us, so I would trust his judgement. I'd rather us get this type of player than Crouch or some other ageing faded Prem player on one last payday before retirement. I like Gayle too but he's likely to cost 4 times as much as Washington and probably wants a team on with a realistic shot of promotion this summer.

Yes Fabs most are dross at Championship level and the even the one or two who are "acceptable" out of that bunch of 13 are only ordinary at best. You know I have said so all along for months now. Just my opinion of course.
Neil Warnock must have agreed with me to some extent because I noted in that home game against Preston not many were selected were they? One or maybe two if my memory is correct. Also the greatest things since sliced bread Chery and Luongo have faded from the scene eh?
Furthermore if all of those 13 new signings were so good why are we in the lower half of the league and the majority of our performances this season so bad?
Now a word about the players we have retained. If you have reasonable players who are playing badly(and who can argue about that) there is always some hope.....but if you have Dross players there is no hope.
Bamford Yes. Washington no.

If you have reasonable players who are playing badly(and who can argue about that) there is always some hope.....but if you have Dross players there is no hope. Well firstly, Chery & Luongo haven't been getting much game time and it's quite telling that, when Luongo got his 1st start for quite a while, he was one of, if not the, stand out players in a 3-0 away win. As for Neil Warnock agreeing, I'm sure he had his own reason for picking the players he did bu9t remind me, how did we do in that home game against Preston? Nobody has said that ALL of those 13 signings were good, doesn't mean they're ALL dross though. The reason we're where we are in the table? Do you really believe we're there because of the summer signings? Poor performances from the likes of Fer, some horrid and costly mistakes from Green and some poor decision making fro the dug-out are far more likely reasons. You seem determined to use the Summer 13 as scapegoats though. Looking at a few more of those Summer 13, even JET deputised competently when Austin was first injured and Polter has scored 3 in his last 4 games. How about Hall? Is he dross? Some would say he's been our best player since he's been in the starting eleven. With the transfer budget we had and, given we didn't raise the expected funds from the sale of our more valuable assets, you're not going to get 13 top players in, especially in the championship although I do suspect that, if you send someone to the supermarket with 20p to buy a tin of baked beans, you'd complain if they didn't come back with Heinz!

Fabs even after all this time you and I are not going to agree about those 13 new signings and there is nothing wrong with that. Although now I do have more people on my side than in Aug/ Sept. Back then I really was a voice in the wilderness. I have always said that FFP and financial restrictions were a real problem for the club. Its difficult. Obviously we could not go out and sign Messi and Ronaldo Still say we could and should have done better though. Lets hope I have got it all wrong about Washington and he is not another failure added to the pile.

I don't expect us to agree kerrins but it would be nice if you were to acknowledge the points I made in my last post. After all, that's what makes a good debate. Seems a bit off to constantly state your point of view and not show the courtesy of acknowledging others' Maybe you could at least answer the question I asked. Is Grant Hall dross?

Here's my can go tomorrow list with Fer and Sandro list.
Gobern- Ridiculous buy. JET- Still lazy from what I can make out. TOZSER- yet to see anything good. Perch- Desperation signing, due to the fact took us all summer.
These 4 were poor buys imo and would rather we signed Bentley than Smithies.
Wouldnt say im overly saddened by any others at this point. A couple still need a good run of games , like Gladwin.

It still says "to sign" - wake me up when it says "has signed". Then's lets move on quickly as I think we need 4 more in and there will be 4 more out.
Ok, it was more to just let everyone know medical was passed

There are good players in League 1 and 2 but clubs find it easier to go for "proven" players such as Sandro, Boswinga, & co. Look what Oxford United are capable of, they played some very good football in that cup game.
