If Bentley is who we'll sign if he goes, then I really do hope so But if London means end of window say 11pm, then that leaves us with one keeper and an unproven youngster. Prefer we signed Bentley and kept Green.

If the club have allowed McCarthy to leave without an assurance from Green that he will be staying then I'm seriously worried for our club. The promises that lessons have been learnt and that Les and Chris Ramsey are "doing a great job" can be taken as total Sh*te as to be going into the start of the season without a recognised goalie is suicide. I've always been positive about Fernandes but recently (since the Ramsey interview on Talksport)my positivity has been waning! We have already reduced the wage bill with the release of Barton Zamora SWP Taarabt Ferdinand Caulker McCarthy Isla Vargas Mutch Kranjcar Dunne by I would estimate £30 million pound a year but are still looking to lower the wage bill by sending out Fer on loan (supposedly)who only signed a 3 year deal so by the time he returns will be worth Jack this already on top of the generous parachute payment we have received. Worried!!!!

This is a reflection of our financial mismanagement and the mitigation we are making to avoid further FFP penalties.
Despite the pain, this necessary. We were fools who tried to buy success and failed.
So if Green goes, so be it. We will replace him within our means.
That how our club ought to be run.

Green has given no assurances whatsoever that he is staying , the thing that worries me is cr and lf are stating that if Green goes then they will go after Bentley , as i posted on a previous thread we should get someone in now because if Green goes we are in trouble , just Lumley is all we have

Really would not miss Green if someone bought him , thought Mcarthy should've been installed as first choice rather than selling him , if we get Southend guy then Green can definitely go .

McCarthy had a clause in his contract which allowed him to leave at a price we made a profit. Good business IMO. Why would we want 2 Prem standard keepers in the Championship? That would have been lessons not learned.
If, and its a big if, Green leaves (and there's been no rumour recently of him going) then we'll get a Championship level keeper.
I don't know what all the fuss is about!

Agree with 57 and sharky. We can't just have one keeper at the club who has played league football in Bentley. He maybe a good prospect but to put him as our only keeper with no experienced back up would be madness. We would be better off keeping Green and signing Bentley as his understudy for the coming season.
He would learn loads working with Green for the season before he is given the gloves full time. I think signing Bentley is a great idea, but not as the only keeper in the squad with some kind of experience.
I also think Lumley needs a season somewhere, preferably a league 1 club where he plays week in week out to gain some experience himself. Imagine Bentley is injured, we are playing Fulham, both teams need a win, a six pointer, would you trust Lumley to be able to handle the pressure with no football under his belt, I would be worried. We need two decent keepers, one we have Rob Green, the other hopefully will be David Bentley.

The Championship club have yet to make a bid for the highly rated 22-year-old shot-stopper. But, speaking after his side’s 1-1 draw with Italian side Atalanta this afternoon, Ramsey – a former Shrimpers defender - revealed he is keen to take Bentley to Loftus Road. “Bentley of Southend is a player on our signings list,” said Ramsey. Bentley has already attracted an offer of £1million from Hull City this summer but Blues chairman Ron Martin opted to reject the bid.

After such a good season, I cant see him going to us as a number 2, likewise, I cant see Green being the only £50,000+ player, the club want to keep.
As the club have hinted they want all the big earners of the wage bill, I think we will get Bentley, only if Green moves on.

That would be my presumption too (although I dunno about Green's wages being that amount, not unfeasible though obviously). Bentley is in demand and I don't think being an understudy to Green, despite that potentially being developmentally a good thing for him, is worth it when he's had interest from other Championship clubs. He's had a fantastic season at Southend and I presume he'll want to keep up that momentum by playing regular football.

Good points from bow and mason. Its a case then for me, get Bentley now, let Green know Bentley will be number 1. Green will want a move, move him on cut price, or a loan. Get Jasskelinen as back up and coach as rory suggested. sounds simple, but something tells me, Green will be here come the end of the window, and Bentley will not. Hope I am wrong. I like Green, but Bentley is the long term.

Why isn't England's No 2 keeper good enough for a Championship team?
None of the mentioned keepers are anywhere near as good as Green IMO so why the obsession with moving him on.
Makes no sense at all to me.

If we get Bentley Dave Mc seems to think he'll play over Green Why? Makes absolutly no sense to me. Crazy! Green's clearly good enough for the Championship, it just feels like if we're trying to be sensible with our expenditure and wage policy, it makes better longer term sense to move him on when we can still command a fee for him and make a commitment in bringing in a young, promising goalkeeper to cut his teeth in the Championship. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of time for Green and don't have any problem with him starting in the Championship, but Bentley seems a better long term option. Obviously more money involved, but for example, I'd love Austin to stay but if we can command a realistic fee for him from a Premier League club and re-invest that then I'd be well behind that too. Not to do with Green's ability.

Makes no sense at all to me. I do think Green is good enough for the championship and of course Rangers. But like bow says we would be better off looking at the long term if Bentley wouldn't come as number 2 to begin with. Just hate to see us miss out on a potential England keeper, and see him sold for a massive fee one day.

I personally find it hilarious calling him England's no 2, seeing as though as soon as Fraser Forster and Ben Foster are fit again he'll go back to being 4th choice.....
