What (very bad) joke.
Institutional corruption, the horrendous conditions of virtual (if not actual) slavery of the stadium construction workers in Qatar and now this.
Absolutely pathetic.
Trevor Sinclair has it about right:
Blatter and his sickening, nest-feathering, cronies need to go. But he seems to be all-powerful in his own little set up, and the coming 'election' for his role has all the openness of Putin or Mugabe running for re-election...

If this doesn't get changed everyone should just boycott the World Cup in Qatar. It's not like you can even safely play in that weather anyways. Maybe Uefa, Concacef, CAF, CONMEBOL, and the AFC should just try to organize their own thing together.

If UEFA left the others would all follow suit fairly quickly I imagine. Shame Platini is in Blatter's back pocket though.

Should bever have been given it in the first place, their treatment of women/minorities is appalling and then for fooball it is totally unsuitable too, so why were they awarded it in the first place? Ah yes.......

What an absolute farce for the Premier season and all the other Serie A, Bundesliga etc . What will there be a six week break at the beginning of December after about 16 games and return in Feb to carry on . Farcical will cost millions . Of course we could well be challenging for Champions League then and that could really mess up our rhythm . On the other hand we could still have SWP on our books .

Also today in order to avoid having an overly hot World Cup they are moving it to the winter and in order to accommodate this they're moving the African Cup of Nations to June when it will be errr very hot

The 2023 AFCON is being held in Guinea. On average, June is the 3rd wettest month of the year there and January tends to be hotter than June (avg low 23C/high 30C), so if anything, moving it would make the conditions less hot. Totally agree that the Winter World Cup is a massive shambles and that FIFA are probably massively corrupt, but Africa is a massive continent. I promise to get out more soon.

Simple answer, bouycott the world cup Quite. If only a group of influential nation teams would get together and boycott this fiasco, perhaps setting up their own tournament in protest. Any one of the following issues could be enough to persuade them, but taken together the argument is pretty compelling. The world and its brother knows the vote was bent. The Sunday Times reported that Bin Hammam (from Qatar) spent $5 million on bribes and gifts, predominantly to African soccer officials, to ensure that Qatar won the bid over the United States, Australia, and Japan. The tournament will be played in dangerously hot conditions - or will take a two month of domestic league programmes in November/December - with the final being played on December 23rd. Despite being THE richest country in the world (in terms of per capita income of $142k - compared to USA at $53k and UK $38k according to the IMF), the Qatar stadium building programme uses indentured/slave labour - largely immigrant workers who live in appalling squalid conditions and have no freedom to leave/return home, as their employers hold their passports. Some have been hostages to this slavery for decades. Worker safety on these sites is simply not considered - if such practices happened in the UK, contractors would be jailed for corporate manslaughter. It is said that more than 4,000 workers will DIE before a ball is kicked in Qatar - over 1,000 workers have died already. This is just sick.

Agree that it would be fantastic if a boycott was organised. What I find massively depressing about the whole thing is that the FA/Prem are totally fine to kick off because of the affect on the top European league competitions, but don't see endemic corruption (probably cos we unsuccessfully tried our hand at it with our failed bids), modern day slavery and the death of hundreds and hundreds of workers as adequate reasons to boycott the tournament.
