JTA - British youth soccer player charged for anti-Semitic tauntsOctober 22, 2014 (JTA) — A player in a British youth soccer league who allegedly heaped a Jewish team with anti-Semitic abuse was charged with “discrimination on the grounds of religion” by the Football Association. Members of the Manchester Maccabi team said they had endured anti-Jewish taunts and jibes about Palestine in a game with the Curzon Ashton team earlier this month. With 10 minutes left in the game and his team losing 9-2, coach Anthony Dennison led the players off the field after an argument between two players drew in other players, coaches and spectators. The Football Association charged the player in the under-16 league with “discrimination on the grounds of religion,” and the Curzon Ashton team with a “failure to ensure players/spectators and/or club officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion (aggravated by discrimination),” the Jewish Chronicle reported. A player on the Manchester Maccabi team has been charged with discrimination on the grounds of color or race. Both players face immediate suspension of at least five matches if found guilty. “We’re used to anti-Semitism, we play with the Star of David on our shirts, we wear the kippah, but in the past we’ve had managers apologize profusely and have a word with their players,” Dennison told the Manchester Evening News at the time of the incident. “On this occasion everyone was clapping and laughing at these racist insults and it was only one or two of their boys who seemed quite embarrassed and apologized to my players.” www.jta.org/2014/10/22/news-opinion/world/british-youth-soccer-player-charged-for-anti-semitic-taunts#ixzz3GsEidQB3

Teams charged by FA over abuseBy Josh Jackman, October 20, 2014 A Sunday League player who allegedly shouted antisemitic abuse during a match against Jewish team Manchester Maccabi has been charged by the Football Association. The under-16s footballer has been charged with “discrimination on the grounds of religion,” while his club Curzon Ashton have also received a charge for a “failure to ensure players/spectators and/or club officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion (aggravated by discrimination).” A Manchester Maccabi player has also been charged, with discrimination on the grounds of colour or race. If found guilty, the two boys face an immediate suspension of at least five matches. Manchester Maccabi manager Anthony Dennison has been charged with “improper conduct including foul and abusive language.” Mr Dennison removed his team from the pitch with 10 minutes of the match to go after what he called “appalling behaviour” during the Tameside League match, which Curzon Ashton were winning 9-2. The parties have until October 31 to respond to the charges. www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/124469/teams-charged-fa-over-abuse

First I must say that there is no place in football, sport or any other area of life where antisemetic abuse should be tolerated or indeed abuse based on any other aspect of race, religion, politics etc. Those responsible for any abuse given in the match in question should be firmly dealt with. What intrigues me though is that Manchester Maccabi are described as a "Jewish" team. I am aware of another junior club, who used Benfica as part of their name, and whose staff and players consisted entirely of ethnic Portuguese. The club in question were refused entry to any league as they were regarded as exercising discrimination on the grounds of nationality. My personal opinion is that I cannot see any major problem in local league teams representing their local community - as long as they stick to playing football and not abusing each other, but then again we all know the historic problems caused by the Celtic/Rangers situation. I wonder where the FA and Kick It Out campaigns stand on this sort of issue? Just read the article and it also says that a Maccabi player is under investigation for racism, doesn't get much of a mention though.

I don't know specifically. Maccabi is of course a whole International Jewish Movement with the Maccabi games kind of like the Olympics but obviously far lesser.
I have no idea if a non Jew wants to play for one of the Maccabi Clubs, what's the situation (Presumably easy to find that out)
Or the case with other religious groups
It's origins of course are where Jews were excluded.

Football teams should be made up of players of the community, not restricted to players of any one ethnesity. To abuse a team because of this is wrong, to pick a team based on this is just as wrong.
And people dared point the finger at South Africa - which practiced in my opinion a wrongful policy. If you are good enough, you should get picked, regardless.
To say, you can only play for us if you are "Insert any race or religeon or persuasian you wish here" is plain wrong and just as discrimitary. If anything, football could be used to promote tolerance, acceptance of anyone regardless of their colour, race, religeous beliefs or is this too open minded to be acceptable?
