Gary remembers late leveller in ten-goal thriller ...
To score the equaliser in the last minute like that was just fantastic"
Gary Micklewhite
GARY MICKLEWHITE joined QPR from Manchester United as an 18-year-old in 1979 and went on to enjoy a six-year spell at Loftus Road which included an FA Cup Final appearance (plus the replay) in 1982, and Division Two title glory 12 months later.
“It turned out to be a very good move for me,” Micklewhite told www.qpr.co.uk. “I was a bit fortunate that Terry Venables came to be the manager because Terry quite liked me and he gave me my debut. He was excellent.”
Micklewhite was back in W12 with members of the 1982/83 league-winning squad earlier this month to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their success, and he said: “QPR is a great club, very family orientated. It’s wonderful to come back.”
Now a London black cab driver, the 52-year-old will always be remembered by R’s fans for scoring a dramatic late equaliser in a 5-5 draw against Newcastle United in 1984.
“I remember that game,” he recalls. “We got absolutely hammered in the first-half, we were really poor.
“We came in at half-time 4-0 down. Alan Mullery was the manager and he just said to us: ‘Keep the score down’.
“Then we went out and got a goal, and then another goal. We ended up getting it to 5-4 down, and I remember the ball coming to me, controlling it with my right foot and then hitting it into the top corner.
“The place erupted. Even after that I think we had a chance to score and so did they, it was an amazing game. To score the equaliser in the last minute like that was just fantastic”
Micklewhite also scored another memorable leveller for the R’s. At least, he thought he did!
In the replay of the 1982 FA Cup Final against Tottenham, Micklewhite found the back of the net, only for the goal to be ruled out. The reasons for it not standing are still unclear, even now.
“I have no idea why it was disallowed,” Micklewhite admitted. “A friend of mine actually picked Terry up in a cab the other day and asked him about it. Terry said to this day he still doesn’t know why it wasn’t given. He doesn’t know and I don’t know!”
