ith Cardiff City reportedly set to announce the signing of Icelandic International striker Heidar Helguson from QPR, we spoke to Adam Boxer over at Vital QPR to get his views on the striker: Good in the air but under 6 foot - is he actually a target man? 100% yes. Heidar has proven himself an expert with his back to goal. His flick-ons are measured and sensible in respect to his surroundings and helped bring the creative players into play. In the Premier League his style did not change and it helped us to great effect at times. A case in point was his domination of Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium - a notoriously difficult place to get a result. Has he played much as a lone striker for QPR? In the Championship, certainly. Neil Warnock liked to adopt a 4-3-2-1 formation that meant that Heidar forayed up front and was tasked with holding the ball and bringing others into play. The calibre of flair players such as Adel Taarabt and Wayne Routledge thrived on this service. Others have claimed he is an intelligent forward - fair? Agreed, as mentioned above his distribution is always measured. His guided headers are always intelligent and accurate and helped get the best out of the rest on the park. While others will just flick-on aimlessly, Heidar always eyes that sensible avenue - if it isn't there then the ball will stay with him until something presents itself. How did he get on last season in the Premiership We had three phases in the Premier League last season as you'll be aware. The initial good start - this was helped greatly by Heidar and a goal against Stoke and an important penalty against Chelsea were just two defining moments in a memorable season. His job didn't change and while that half a yard was sometimes lacking he adapted his game perfectly to play some of the better football I've seen from the Icelander. Any particular strengths or weaknesses? His weaknesses would definitely have to be his pace and his injury-prone nature - no question. As an intelligent footballer he tends to drop into gaps as opposed to beat people with pace and this counter-acts a lack of speed. He is prone to extended spells on the sidelines which is something we have found out and Bolton Wanderers supporters certainly took a great deal of delight in pointing out when we captured him. Overall he has been a great success at the club and should this deal not go through there is definitely a case that he would be pushing for a place in the 25-man squad. Of course, in addition would have been Watfords property if they could have afforded him.

Always loved Helgy. Worked his bum off for the cause, scored crucial goals and thoroughly deserved all the accolades he got from the R's faithful

Of course we had the most mileage on this board, for ever, about if he had a physical or not. also if he was coming here or going to Charlton. then the Waiter, with the best interest of Rangers at heart loaned him to Watford who were a chief relegation rival of ours. A long saga. His marriage to miss Iceland was good for him and didnt wear him out. but she would have worn me out.

Disappointing. At times last season he made some very highly rated defenders look ordinary and, of course, scored some vital goals which were as important to our survival as goals scored at the end of the season. I can’t claim to have always been a fan of his, however he seemed to become a better player in the Premier League than he was in the Championship. I won’t miss him taking penalties though, that was torture!

Showed great form last season until his injury Strange because in the championship he was a poor finisher in front of goal

The thing is at his age he needs first team football. At QPR he would have been 4th or 5th choice.

I am sorry to see him go. I think he has been immense for us and lifted the whole team on a few occasions. I know that with all the new signings that someone has to make way, still sad it has to be Ice Man. I really wish him the best of luck though.

And steadily the Promotion Team/squad dissolves: From Kenny to Gorkss to Helguson and the others - and of course Warnock and his team.

Only Faurlin, Taarabt and maybe Mackie & Hill as well seem to be good enough to be Premiership players on the long term. That's sad as I think the magic about this squad that got promoted is slowly disapearing with the players leaving...

Cardiff Official Site DEAL DONE: HEIDAR HELGUSON Posted on: Thu 02 Aug 2012 Cardiff City Football Club are pleased to announce that Heidar Helguson has joined the club from Queens Park Rangers following the completion of his medical and signing late on Thursday afternoon. Heidar's arrival marks the fifth new addition to the Cardiff City squad following the capture of Joe Lewis, Jordon Mutch, Kim Bo-Kyung and Etien Velikonja this summer. The former Iceland International front man will take squad number 22 for the 2012/13 season at Cardiff City Stadium, signing a one year deal in the Welsh capital for an undisclosed fee from the Hoops. Friday will be Heidar's first day of training with his new team-mates, after an evening watching Iceland versus Sweden at Handball in the Olympics with fellow countryman Aron Gunnarsson tonight. The striker will also be included in the pre-season Bluebirds squad at Oxford United on Saturday. Check back right here on Friday for reaction to the move from both Heidar and his reuniting boss Malky Mackay. www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10335~2869743,00.html

Now I hope we draw Cardiff home in the FA Cup, and we give Heidar the biggest ovation ever, and then thrash Cardiff 5-0.

Maybe I missed/forgotten, but I don't recall any of us really talking about Helguson leaving: It was all Husle/Vine/Agyemang and maybe Bothroyd

Well he took one IMMENSE penalty a slow slide to left while Check was doing a rotating two step.
That my mates turned out to be the sealant to Premierland . He often played hurt but came back and worked his kishkes off always.

Not sure I ever saw him lose a header. A great servant and was just about all we could hang on to mid season last year.
Reliable...even given the spectacular changes, are there any with that moniker now?

Great servant of the club when fit.
Sentiments aside though the guy is 34, hugely injury prone and out of contract. I would have been surprised if we'd have kept him. He will do a good job for Cardiff and he goes with all our best wishes and thanks.
On the plus side, though, that should be Taarabt nailed on for penalties now then
