Ki Sung-yueng close to deal with QPR Midfielder, 23, would join forces with Park Ji-sung in the EPLJuly 12,2012 Midfielder Ki Sung-yueng of Celtic is closing in on finalizing a transfer to the Queens Park Rangers, which would see him join Park Ji-sung in the English Premier League, a source familiar with the negotiations told the JoongAng Ilbo yesterday.
“QPR has completed a deal with Celtic for Ki Sung-yueng’s transfer and the two sides are currently negotiating over his salary,” the source said.
“Ki Sung-yueng’s side and the clubs are all positive about the transfer, so it is virtually a done deal. Ki will play in the English Premier League.”
The deal would pair two Korean nationals on the same English Premier League club for the first time.
Park, a 31-year-old midfielder, joined QPR on Monday, ending his decorated seven-year career with Manchester United.
He began training with QPR on Tuesday ahead of the team’s Asian tour later this month. Since Park’s move to United in 2005, eight other Korean players have played in the English Premier League, and Ki will become the 10th if the transfer is finalized.
Ki scored seven goals in 41 games last season, helping Celtic win the Scottish Premier League.
Formerly with FC Seoul in the K-League, Ki signed a four-year deal with the Scottish side in December 2009 and has one and a half years left on the contract.
QPR is known to have waged a tug-of-war with Celtic over Ki’s transfer fee of around 7 million pounds ($11 million).
Owner Tony Fernandes said at Monday’s press conference to introduce Park that QPR is “very aware” of Ki. “He is a player we will be watching and also monitoring closely,” Fernandes said. Asked about Ki’s possible move to QPR, Park said he welcomed it.
Ki, a member of the national team for the London Olympics, told reporters his focus at the moment is on the Olympics, declining to comment on the issue of his transfer. But observers say that he could attend a joining ceremony with QPR before the Olympics begin.
The 23-year-old will leave with the national team for London on Sunday after a practice match with New Zealand in Seoul on Saturday. QPR is based in west London.
“He’s going to be linked with other clubs. He’s a good player,” Celtic manager Neil Lennon was quoted as saying recently by The Scottish Sun.
“We had interest from a Russian club but rebuffed their offer and we’ve not heard back since.
“He seems pretty happy here but everyone’s in the same boat - there will come a time when we have to sell because everyone has their price,” he said.
Some other European clubs including the English Premier League’s Liverpool have also shown an interest in landing Ki.
The British newspaper The Sun reported yesterday that Russia’s Rubin Kazan, Spain’s Deportivo La Coruna and several German Bundesliga clubs have expressed an interest in Ki as well as QPR, but said Liverpool is leading the way with an offer of 7 million pounds.
The Daily Mail reported that Celtic embarked on a hunt for a replacement for Ki amid rumors of QPR’s interest. The paper said that Celtic manager Lennon is interested in landing another young Korean midfielder, Kim Bo-kyung, 22, who is playing for Japanese club Cerezo Osaka.
Kim, currently practicing with the Korean national team for the Olympics, told reporters during a media event at in Paju, Gyeonggi, that Celtic or English lower league side Cardiff could be his ticket to Europe.
Park and Ki played together on Korea’s national team for two years until Park retired from international competition in January of last year after the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
As both are midfielders, local experts suggest that Park play as a wing midfielder and Ki as a central midfielder.

I've just had a look at WATRB and there is a Korean on there who is translating what Korean fans are saying about QPR.
He says QPR is now the most searched thing on the internet in South Korea. Also says 80% of Man Utd fans are now switching to QPR

gent: Celtic star is in talks with QPR Thursday, July 12, 2012 7:39 AM Transfer news: Ki Sung-Yueng could be moving to Loftus Road Advertisement Celtic star Ki Sung-Yueng is in talks with QPR, his agent has confirmed. The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Scottish champions with speculation mounting that he would complete a move earlier this week. “It’s true that talks with QPR are in progress, but nothing has been decided yet,” a statement from Ki’s representatives said in a statement according to The Chosun Ilbo. The midfielder did not appear willing to move to QPR when quizzed about the move last week. “I heard that QPR will have a press conference on [June] 9 with Korean player but I won’t be there,” the South Korea international told reporters. “I know that QPR showed interest in me but I don’t know what’s going on right now. Anyway, I’m not the player who will attend press conference, it’s 100%. “I have not decided my future, now is time to focus on [the] Olympics. It’s uncomfortable to see many transfer news about me. I don’t even want to know the stories unless I receive an offer. “Who would go to QPR? I’m curious. Maybe Lee Chung-Yong or Park Chu-Young?” www.london24.com/sport/qpr/agent_celtic_star_is_in_talks_with_qpr_1_1442784

Rumor Mill Has Ki Sung-yueng Possibly Joining Park at QPR Ki Sung-yueng Will Ki Sung-yueng of Celtic in the Scottish Premier League be the next target for England's Queens Park Ranger, which this week signed Park Ji-sung from Manchester United?
Ki has already been courted by a number of top-flight European clubs, according to British tabloids and other media. The Sun, a hugely popular British daily known for its at times outlandish gossip-mongering, reported on Thursday that, "Liverpool are lining up a 7million pound swoop for Celtic star Ki Sung-yueng. SunSport understands new Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has the Korean high on his wish-list of summer signing targets."
However, it added that, "QPR, Rubin Kazan [in Russia] and Deportivo La Coruna [in Spain] are all keen to land the 23-year-old. There is also strong interest in Ki from Germany, with several Bundesliga clubs monitoring his situation, but Liverpool lead the way."
Ki signed a four-year deal with Celtic based on a transfer fee of 2.1 million pound in December 2009. But he struggled in the physical league in his first year and failed to net a single goal. In a shocking turnaround, he then emerged as the team's leading midfielder from the second season, scoring 11 goals in total in two seasons from 2010-2011 season.
With one and a half years remaining on his contract, he is expected to leave the club this summer before the new season starts.
The financial problems plaguing the Scottish league also shore up the credibility of rumors that Ki may be looking to make a quick exit. Celtic's main rival Rangers was expelled from the Premier League last season due to its dire financial circumstances, and this is likely to deal a blow to the league as it lost 16 million pound in broadcasting profits.
Park's new team QPR also seems to be keen on acquiring Ki. QPR Manager Mark Hughes publicly announced his desire to have the young Korean on his team during a press conference on Monday. Hughes reportedly contacted Ki when he came to Korea to meet Park last month.
However, Ki may prefer Liverpool, especially given its higher standing and his admiration for iconic midfielder and captain Steven Gerrard. In homage to the player, Ki even used the Twitter ID "Kirrard" until last year, and any offer from the Merseyside club would probably be too attractive for him to resist.
The situation will no doubt boil down to negotiations on transfer fees. Celtic recently received an offer from Rubin Kazan for Ki with a transfer fee of 6 million pound, but the negotiations broke down as Celtic demanded over 9 million pound.
"It's true that talks with QPR are in progress, but nothing has been decided yet," Ki's agent said. The transfer window in Europe is open until Aug. 31.

Ki Sung-Yueng's agent: We are in talks with QPR but nothing is yet decided The young South Korean, who will compete at the 2012 London Olympics, is reportedly close to a move to Rangers only days after they unveiled compatriot Park Ji-Sung
12-Jul-2012 10:18:00 AM By Ben Somerford
The agency of Celtic's South Korea international Ki Sung-Yueng has confirmed they are in negotiations with QPR regarding a move to the Premier League club.
The 23-year-old central midfielder has been linked with a move away from Glasgow throughout the off-season, with speculation mounting about a switch to QPR last week with the club confirming a Korean would join on Monday. Rangers unveiled Park Ji-Sung instead of Ki, however rumours have persisted with QPR owner Tony Fernandes admitting at Monday's press conference they were interested in the former FC Seoul man.
Ki's agency confirmed to Korean reporters that a deal with the Premier League club is currently being discussed.
"It's true that talks with QPR are in progress, but nothing has been decided yet," Ki's agency said in a statement according to The Chosun Ilbo.
Fernandes had said on Monday: “He is a player we will be watching and also monitoring closely.”
Ilgan Sports had reported on Wednesday that QPR and Celtic have agreed a deal, with negotiations on personal terms still being discussed.
“QPR has completed a deal with Celtic for Ki Sung-Yueng’s transfer and the two sides are currently negotiating over his salary,” the Ilgan Sports source said.
“Ki Sung-Yueng’s side and the clubs are all positive about the transfer, so it is virtually a done deal. Ki will play in the English Premier League.”
QPR, who avoided relegation on the final day last campaign, have already signed Park, Ryan Nelsen, Andy Johnson, Robert Green and Fabio da Silva this off-season.

When was the last time we could have read this & not laughed out loud. What's more is that we are all taking it as a possibility that an international player might actually choose us over them. I'm not even sure that this would have happened in the 70's.

Yes pretty amazing stuff Terry we are competing with Liverpool on Ki and competing with Newcastle for Hoilett and they just finished fifth . Some would say its just because we are paying high wages ? probably? maybe? but they have better hopes of winning silverware than us and that must mean something still to players?

QUEENS PARK RANGERS believe they have won the race to sign Celtic’s Ki Sung-Yueng.
Reports from Seoul claim that a fee of £7m has been agreed between the clubs and that only the finalising of personal terms is holding up the transfer.
Liverpool were the latest club to be linked with Ki, who has also attracted interest from the Bundesliga. Celtic received an offer from Russian club Rubin Kazan, believed to be £6m. The offer was rejected by the Parkhead side.
QPR made their interest known several weeks ago and, having now acquired the services of another South Korean, Park Ji-Sung, are confident they are very close to completing a move for Ki.
A source close to Ki is quoted as saying: “QPR has completed a deal with Celtic for Ki Sung-Yueng’s transfer and the two sides are currently negotiating over his salary. Ki Sung-Yueng’s side and the clubs are all positive about the transfer, so it is virtually a done deal. Ki will play in the English Premier League.”
Neil Lennon will use the transfer fee to supplement his squad with new arrivals, with the Celtic manager tracking Ki’s Olympic team-mate Kim Bo-Kyung.

Ki is looking as possible now as Hoilett or even more so now that Hoilett appears to want to speak to Borrusia before he makes a decision? Newcastle waiting in the wings?
