England should have a Captain who is a positive role model. Someone like Anton Ferdinand.

Guilty or not, is Terry really the man to captain England?
By Patrick CollinsLast updated at 10:58 PM on 28th January 2012 So the day arrived, the Cup tie was played and the collateral damage was mercifully modest. The Queens Park Rangers fans jeered John Terry and the Chelsea supporters abused Anton Ferdinand. It was tacky, tribal and thoroughly predictable. Yet we knew that yesterday's squabble was merely the overture. On Wednesday, at West London Magistrates' Court, Terry will enter a plea of not guilty to a charge of racially abusing Ferdinand at October's QPR v Chelsea match. Leading from the front: John Terry has retained the England captaincy despite a number of controversies Leading from the front: John Terry has retained the England captaincy despite a number of controversies Then, on the last day of February, comes the occasion that those who administer the national game are actively dreading: England v Holland, a friendly international at Wembley, with England walking out behind their fist-pumping, chest-thumping inspirational captain and leader, John Terry. The timing could not be more wretched. After years of fighting the good fight on matters of race, English football finds itself embarrassed, first by the consequences of Liverpool's ham-fisted, pig-headed defence of Luis Suarez, and now by the Terry affair. Here we should stress, for those incapable of grasping the obvious, that Terry is innocent until a court decides otherwise. For a man in his position, the consequences of a guilty verdict would be devastating. And it is the nature of that position which makes the matter so important. When we think of the England captain, we think of towering figures, from Billy Wright to Bobby Moore, Bryan Robson to Tony Adams, Alan Shearer, David Beckham and beyond. All were prey to human flaws and shortcomings, but all brought their own qualities of industry and dignity to the task. And all revealed an awareness that the captain of the England football team occupies an estimable position in the life of the nation. When Fabio Capello first awarded the captaincy to Terry, some of us suggested that this was the manager's greatest mistake. A long and rackety history of scrapes and laddish scandals made Terry a singularly poor choice. But the England coach simply shrugged off all misgivings. Reared in the Italian school, which has no special regard for the office of captain, he simply looked around for a player of a certain age with an adequate number of caps to his name, and tossed him the armband. Unfortunately, Terry caught it. As it happens, we were wrong about Capello's greatest mistake. That came when he reinstated Terry as captain, after stripping him of the position following his alleged affair with the former partner of his friend and international colleague Wayne Bridge. It was an extraordinary decision which told the world that, in Capello's view, even the most offensive misdemeanours could not stand between Terry and the leadership of England. Leader: John Terry continues to lead Chelsea ahead of his court appearance Leader: John Terry continues to lead Chelsea ahead of his court appearance Capello, of course, will not be rocking any boats. With pockets bulging and contract expired, he will be on his way just as soon as England are eliminated from Euro 2012. We should expect no drastic action from that quarter. Indeed, the notion that he might actually invite the inconvenience of seeking a new captain at this stage of the game has probably never crossed his mind. Which takes us to the Football Association. The governing body of English football has suffered decades of criticism, not least from this quarter, but I truly believe that it is the last best hope of the English game. The people running the FA are thoughtful, civilised and sensitive to adverse public impressions. Having dealt most impressively with the Suarez case, they recognise that Terry, in the voguish jargon, is the elephant in the room. Time to act: Fabio Capello has to make the right call before Euro 2012 Time to act: Fabio Capello has to make the right call before Euro 2012 They realise that any attempt to relieve him of the captaincy will provoke hissy fits from their national coach. Equally, they know that a multi-racial society will not easily accept that the leader of its major sporting team should be accused of such a profoundly disturbing offence. And so, privately, they pray for deliverance; a tweaked hamstring, a tight calf, even a tactical migraine. In short, anything to remove the captain from centre stage. It is not simply a matter of image, although that is plainly important. It is more a question of sending out the right messages to a sport which properly prides itself in attracting a large proportion of black players. Terry's not guilty plea is of central importance, but until that plea is tested at law, a shadow will haunt the game. There is, of course, the possibility that Terry will sniff the prevailing winds and decide to remove himself from the centre of attention. Without in any way compromising his position or damaging his defence, he might step down from the captaincy and cast off the chains of office in order to defend himself away from the public glare. On the other hand, he may choose to live out the slogan that hangs from a stand at Stamford Bridge: 'John Terry: Captain, Leader, Legend', it reads. It is trite, crude and bombastic, the kind of nonsense which nobody possessing a sense of the ridiculous could entertain for a moment. Yet I fancy I know the course that John Terry will favour. And I fear the consequences. Read more: www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2093205/Is-John-Terry-really-man-captain-England.html#ixzz1knayV400

If he is pleading not guilty then how can he do that without attending court?
If I pleaded not guilty to a road traffic offence I would have to enter that plea in person.
How come he can get away with someone else entering a plea on his behalf?
I thought you could only do that if you were entering a guilty plea.

Oh Brendan... Sky Terry is not racist - Rodgers Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers insists John Terry is not a racist and thinks the Chelsea captain wll be fully focused against Swansea on Tuesday. Last Updated: 30/01/12 at 17:04 Post Comment .Premier League RSS FeedBookmark with del.icio.usSave to iGoogleSave to My YahooSubmit to redditShare on StumbleUpon..... Rodgers: Thumbs up for JT . .1 of 1..... . The 31-year-old has been charged with racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during October's Premier League meeting between the sides, a charge he strenuously denies. The first hearing in the case is scheduled to take place at Westminster Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has said the club are prepared to give the England skipper time off in the fight to clear his name, although he is expected to face Swansea after excelling in the FA Cup win over QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday. Swansea boss Rodgers worked with Terry during his time as reserve and youth team manager at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2008, and spoke positively about the England captain's character. Rodgers said: "He is a strong personality, John is a good man and from my time knowing him, and what he is being talked about in terms of the charges against him, I can safely say in my period of time working with him that he is not a racist, if that's what he's been pointed the finger as being. "I have absolutely great confidence that is the case. He has been a wonderful leader for Chelsea and I have known him off the field as well and the number of players he helped evolve, dealing with ethnic minorities young and old, it was during the time I was there and I witnessed it, so I would say that is not the case with John. "He is a public figure, he is the national captain and there have been a number of incidents that have drawn him to the publicity. "But from my own experience he is a great man, off the field I had a terrific relationship with him through good and bad times, it wasn't always all smiles. I was able to speak my mind with him at times and tell him how I felt and I am sure he would say the same thing. "I always found his communication open. He is a lover of football and he is happiest when he is on the field or with his family, and I have nothing but high praise for him as in that period when I was there he was a real icon for the football club on and off the field. I found him a terrific man. "From my experience of knowing him quite well over that period of time I would say he is not a racist." Rodgers believes Terry's performance against his own side will not be affected by the situation he finds himself in. "He has the skin of a rhinoceros and he has proven that many times," Rodgers added. "He has the case starting Wednesday but he will love nothing better to be out here playing tomorrow night so I expect him to be involved. "He is one you can hang your hat on, he will be 100% committed, he is a great leader." Tuesday sees the close of the January transfer window, and Rodgers got most of his deals done early as Rory Donnelly, Darnel Situ, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Josh McEachran, who is unavailable for this fixture under the terms of his loan from Chelsea, were all added to his squad. The Swans boss says he is still hopeful of adding "one or two" new faces to his squad before the window shuts, but denied reports linking him with moves for Matthew Bates, Adrian Mariappa and Nicky Maynard. He said: "We made enquiries for a number of players early in the window and, like with many clubs, it has gone quiet, but then we have had feedback on one to two possibilities and we will see. "There is still a lot of work to do if they are to become permanent signings, but we will see over the next 24 hours and take it from there. "We have certainly made no bids as yet but we have been given an indication of what the price would be." www.football365.com/premier-league/7466527/Terry-is-not-racist-Rodgers

Judgement Day: Part I for Chelsea's much-beloved John Terry 'Racist' Terry faces court 2012-02-01 www.sport24.co.za/Soccer/EnglishPremiership/Racist-Terry-faces-court-20120201 London - Chelsea and England captain John Terry will face claims that he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match in October when his case comes before a London court on Wednesday. Lawyers for Terry, who has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, are expected to enter a plea on his behalf before a district judge at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court at 12:00 (SA time). If Terry pleads not guilty, the case is expected to be adjourned until a later date. It is not clear if he will appear in person at what will be a high-profile hearing. In December, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) ordered Terry to be prosecuted for a "racially aggravated public order offence" over comments allegedly made to Ferdinand in an on-field exchange during Chelsea's 1-0 defeat. The CPS took action after video of the incident was posted on the internet and a member of the public complained that Terry had used allegedly racist language when speaking to Ferdinand. Terry could be fined up to 2 500 pounds ($3 900) if found guilty, which is only a fraction of his weekly wage, but such a verdict could have an impact on his lucrative sponsorship deals and relationship with Chelsea team mates drawn from around the globe. Allegations of racial abuse have cast a shadow over the Premier League this season. Liverpool's Luis Suarez was banned for eight matches for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra during a match in October in a case dealt with by the football authorities. Chelsea Football Club has stood by Terry, who as the long-serving club captain is adored by the Blues fans for his footballing commitment and passion on the pitch. Terry missed Chelsea's match against Swansea on the eve of the court case with a knee injury and coach Andres Villas-Boas said on Monday he would consider giving Terry time away from his football commitments to clear his name if it was needed. Allegations against the England captain come at an awkward time with just over four months until the Euro 2012 championship begins in June. Until recently, Terry was expected to form England's central defensive partnership with Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand, the older brother of QPR defender Anton. "I will fight tooth and nail to prove my innocence," Terry said in December after CPS announced plans to prosecute him. ($1 = 0.6377 British pounds)

Lawyers for England captain John Terry delivered a not guilty plea at the first court hearing in his prosecution for allegedly racially abusing Anton Ferdinand.
The Chelsea defender did not appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London
Prosecutors ruled before Christmas that Terry should be charged with a racially-aggravated public order offence over video footage which appears to show him shout an offensive comment at QPR defender Ferdinand.
Terry, 31, who faces a maximum fine of £2,500 if convicted, has denied making the alleged slur during a Barclays Premier League match at Loftus Road on October 23 last year.
When the CPS announced the charges, the player said he was 'disappointed' but would fight 'tooth and nail' to prove his innocence.
The footballer was represented by his solicitor in court for the short procedural hearing.

Max £2,500 fine. How many minutes of his salary is that?
And he avoids a games ban until the case is finished!!
Justice? I don't think so!!

Can't see a games ban happening somehow.
Interesting that AVB says he will get time off to fight his case. Very generous of him considering he has no other choice. Scenario:
Court: Terry required to attend on (date)
AVB: Sorry, he is otherwise engaged on football business so he can't come.
I don't think so, somehow.
