Maybe we should just avoid signing African players? The disruption not only to the EPL but all the major Euro leagues is significant and in reality these leagues drive world football. Its akin to taking out a bunch of key players to let Estonia and Belarus play in the old Soviet Bloc Championships. Just bull s**t

Maybe we should just avoid signing African players? The disruption not only to the EPL but all the major Euro leagues is significant and in reality these leagues drive world football. Its akin to taking out a bunch of key players to let Estonia and Belarus play in the old Soviet Bloc Championships. Just bull s**t How on earth is it bullshit? The main European leagues don't "drive world football", they just happen to be the most watched and economically prosperous - what drives world football is a love of football. The African Cup of Nations is gigantic - if it wasn't a big deal and important to the players involved, they wouldn't go back for it. When you say "key players", those players are just as key to their own national team. Read interviews with a lot of the players who play in the tournament and see how much it means to them to play for their home nation in a major, continent-wide competition. As for the last point about comparing it to an "old Soviet bloc tournament" - that's just straight forward ignorance. Just because European football may be all you hear about doesn't make it the most important to everyone - least of all to the players involved. Not to mention that there is a little thing called the World Cup which tends to happen every four summers - FIFA aren't going to hold major international tournaments within weeks of eachother, particularly with a cross-over of teams involved. And the fact that this tournament has been going on for decades longer than the EPL existed. I think it's pathetic that the major national tournament for African players with a rich history is trashed as an "inconvenience" to you just because it interferes with the precious EPL. And not sign African players? Disregard players from an entire continent because they may miss circa 3 or 4 games a season to play on the international stage? That seems more than a bit reactionary. Edit: The other thing is that the fact the tournament clearly isn't "bullshit" is proved by your own logic, oddly. If you say the European leagues are the ones that power world football, and that the players who leave to play in the African Cup of Nations cause "significant" disruption by doing this, then it's a national competition featuring a "significant" number of players from the top leagues in the world, which in turn would make it pretty significant in its own right. Which it is anyway, but if you want it to maintain the angle of European superiority, there you go.

Thanks for the info, I still don't get why they had to leave for this so many weeks ago though? They could have left after the game yesterday! Interesting to see if Tarbs plays tonight 6,45 uk time Eurosport Morocco v Tunisia

neither of our two are first team choices are they? funny old game aint it, two of our best players and we are in arguably the best league on the planet and their national teams are tiny footballing minnows, and they get in our team but not their countries.

There may be unfinished business with Taarabt and the coaching staff, not sure. Part of me thinks that maybe with the way Morocco play, Taarabt can be a bit of a luxury - they are a solid side but you've got to have a pretty strong spine to the team to give him the freedom to express himself. All the same it's odd for him not to be playing. One aspect I hear a lot is that a lot of the Prem players don't go back as regularly for all the friendlies or regional matches outside of the big competitions (whereas a lot of African players ply their trade in leagues in the Middle East and other places closer to home/national team holds more importance when compared to their club side etc.). So it can disrupt a system already in place and some managers make a point in the African Cup of Nations of not immediately starting such players in the early stages. But I agree, it still seems odd, Traore in particular would seemingly be assured of a start in normal circumstances.

That's it Tunisia win 2-1. Adel had good game when he was subed on. Great free kicks and corneres and continue to play for the team as he's been for us lately. Can only be good for him/ us if he gets some more minutes the next couple of matches.
