Newcastle United half-back Peter McWilliam was so badly injured playing for Scotland in their 2-1 win over Wales that he was never able to play again. He was a one club man and joined Newcastle in 1903 and was with them when they won three League Championships and reached five F.A. Cup Finals between 1905 and 1911 although unfit to appear in the last of course. Became manager of Tottenham Hotspur and was responsible for assembling many of the squad which was so successful immediately after the First War. In 1927 he became manager of Middlesbrough and remained with them until the mid-thirties when he became an Arsenal scout. He rejoined Spurs, again as manager, in 1938 but did not take the post again after the Second War as he felt himself too old. He died in October 1951 at the age of 67.
06 March 1937
Irvine Rhodes, Rotherham United full-back, scored a goal on his League debut against Hartlepools United. This was the first recorded instance of this feat and it was not achieved again until John Mackin scored on his debut for Northampton Town in April 1966.
06 March 1937
By beating Manchester City 2-0 at the Den Millwall became the first Third Division side to reach the semi-finals of the F.A. Cup. Their centre-forward Dave Mangnall scored both goals. Strangely the crowd of 42,474 was about 6,000 less than had seen them beat Derby County in the Fifth Round.
06 March 1959
Jack Crayston was appointed secretary-manager to Doncaster Rovers. Was a stylish right-half in the 1930's beginning with Barrow in 1928, moving to Bradford in 1930 and Arsenal in May 1934. He won two League medals, a Cup-winners medal and eight England caps while at Highbury and, until his retirement in 1939, scored 32 goals in 343 League games. Joined the Arsenal staff after the war and had a spell as manager following the death of Tom Whittaker in 1956.
06 March 1962
South African Bob Holness played his one an only match playing for Orient against Charlton, he scored two goals in the first half before sustaining an injury that forced his substitution after half time, the injury forced his to quit playing football professionally , he later took up the saxophone and played on Gery Raferty's hit record 'Baker Street'
06 March 1968
Port Vale were warned that they faced expulsion from the Football League at the end of the 1967-68 season for making illegal payments to players. In a farcical outcome they were indeed expelled but were immediately re-elected to the League.
06 March 1972
Charlton Athletic's smallest post-war crowd of just 3001 were at the Valley to see them lose 1-0 to Halifax Town.
