Great! Jerome Thomas may be back. Hopes of Thomas and Moore return for West Bromwich Albion’s game against QPR Dec 12 2009 by Christopher Lepkowski, Birmingham Mail JEROME Thomas and Luke Moore are expected to return for Albion’s game against QPR on Monday, with James Morrison finally showing signs of progress in his long battle with a heel injury. Thomas and Moore missed Tuesday night’s defeat to Cardiff due to injury but head coach Roberto Di Matteo hopes to have both fit for the visit of the troubled west Londoners. Di Matteo also had good news regarding Youssouf Mulumbu, who suffered a knee injury and strained his ankle during Tuesday night’s game. “Youssouf is fine – it was his knee and ankle, but he’s now okay,” said Di Matteo. “He had some treatment and trained today. “Luke and Jerome will be training with us and hopefully they’ll be available for selection on Monday. “On Tuesday night we didn’t have too many options or too many ways of changing the game.” Morrison, meanwhile, has been sidelined for eight months after a blister on his heel went septic and failed to heal properly. He also needed to have the infection pumped out of the wound and minor surgery, which prevented him from wearing any footwear, but Di Matteo has revealed his influential midfielder is finally showing signs of nearing a comeback. “The scarring of his wound is progressing very well,” he added. “Hopefully he’ll start doing some fitness work next week. “He can get trainers on now to be able to run. He hasn’t been able to do anything since April. “I think it has been very frustrating for him and for us. We’re looking forward to having him back. “Let’s look at the bright side. Hopefully he can start back next week – that’s the closest we’ve ever been with him. “Then we’ll have a better idea on a comeback date for him.” Di Matteo confirmed that Scott Carson was likely to be fined following his sending-off on Tuesday. Youth goalkeeper Ryan Allsop will be on the bench for Monday’s game as Albion are unable to recall Luke Daniels from his loan spell at Tranmere between transfer windows. www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/west-bromwich-albion-fc/west-bromwich-albion-fc-news/2009/12/12/hopes-of-thomas-and-moore-return-for-west-bromwich-albion-s-game-against-qpr-97319-25374737/

And one-off sponsorship West Brom announce historic one-off shirt deal with Blue Square Dec 12 2009 by Christopher Lepkowski, Birmingham Mail ALBION have announced their first one-game shirt sponsors – online betting company Blue Square. The firm will have their name displayed across Albion’s blue and white-striped jerseys for Monday’s televised game against Queens Park Rangers. Blue Square contacted Albion after the club announced a fortnight ago that they were ready to open talks about ground-breaking match-by-match shirt sponsorship deals. Mark Jenkins, Albion’s finance director, said: “We have had considerable interest in this unique shirt sponsorship venture and we’re delighted that an organisation of Blue Square’s stature has become the first company to join forces with us. “We will be making a little piece of history with Blue Square and are very much looking forward to working closely with them for this game. “We will also be announcing similar deals with other interested companies for future games.” Blue Square have pledged to auction the match-worn shirts in aid of the Whizz-Kidz charity. The Baggies are also ready to open talks about single or multiple-game shirt sponsorship deals for their 22 other remaining Championship fixtures. Anyone interested in discussing sponsoring Albion’s shirt on a single or multiple-game basis should call Mark Jenkins on 0871 271 9848. www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/west-bromwich-albion-fc/west-bromwich-albion-fc-news/2009/12/12/west-brom-announce-historic-one-off-shirt-deal-with-blue-square-97319-25374740/

Carson saw red for landing a head-butt on Michael Chopra during the closing stages of Tuesday's 2-0 home defeat to Cardiff, meaning Kiely will make his first league start since the final day of last season. Teenage keeper Ryan Allsop will be on the bench as Albion cannot recall Luke Daniels from his loan spell at Tranmere until January. Midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu had to be substituted during the first half against the Bluebirds having twisted his knee, but has been passed fit. In-form winger Jerome Thomas and striker Luke Moore both missed the midweek game with hamstring and thigh problems, but manager Roberto Di Matteo has revealed he expects both men to be available for selection. Robert Koren (hernia), James Morrison (heel), Ishmael Miller and Neil Clement (both knee) all remain sidelined, with Koren potentially the first to return around Christmas. Akos Buzsaky is in the QPR squad for Monday night's game. The Hungarian midfielder, who clashed with manager Jim Magilton following Monday night's defeat at Watford, will probably be on the bench at The Hawthorns. Youth coaches Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham have been placed in temporary charge while Rangers investigate Monday's incident. Defender Matt Connolly will be handed a late fitness test on the pelvic injury which has sidelined him for the last two matches. On-loan Blackburn midfielder Steven Reid is still missing with a hamstring injury and striker Angelo Balanta (groin) needs a reserve game. Winger Lee Cook is still out, although he is close to returning from his summer knee operation, while midfielders Gavin Mahon and Martin Rowlands (both knee) are long-term absentees. www.itv.com/sport/football/news/championship/previews/west-brom-v-qpr-389522214.html

Venue: The Hawthorns Date: Monday, 14 December 2009 Kick-off: 1945 GMT Coverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live & BBC local radio TEAM NEWS Akos Buzsaky is expected to be on the bench for QPR as the club looks to put the incident with him and manager Jim Magilton behind them. Defender Matt Connolly remains doubtful with a pelvic injury which has sidelined him for the last two matches. West Brom goalkeeper Dean Kiely will make his first league start of the season as Scott Carson is suspended. Teenager Ryan Allsop will be on the bench and Youssouf Mulumbu, Jerome Thomas and Luke Moore should be fit. MATCH PREVIEW Youth team coaches Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham take charge for QPR's trip to The Hawthorns following the suspension of manager Jim Magilton. Gallen - himself a former youth player at the club - is the brother of ex-QPR forward Kevin Gallen, while Bircham made over 150 appearances for the R's as a player. They have the task of attempting to stop the rot after a series of behind-the-scenes problems and a dismal run of results that has seen Rangers drop to 14th in the table, having looked unstoppable in October when they were in the top four. West Brom, on the other hand, have kept their promotion charge on track despite the odd wobble. They are second, 10 points ahead of QPR, but will be looking to atone for a home defeat against Cardiff last time out. MATCH FACTS Head-to-head • QPR have won 10 of the previous 30 league meetings between these clubs. 606: DEBATE Have your say on this match • West Brom did the double over Rangers when they last met in the Championship in 2007/08, winning 5-1 at The Hawthorns and 2-0 at Loftus Road. • Rangers last won at The Hawthorns in October 1999, when Stuart Wardley's header gave them a 1-0 victory. West Bromwich Albion • Tuesday's 2-0 home defeat against Cardiff ended West Brom's six-match unbeaten run. • It was also the first time in six matches that they failed to score. But they still boast the best scoring record in the Championship this season, with 41 goals netted in 20 games. Queens Park Rangers • QPR, who have lost their last two matches and conceded eight goals in the process, have not suffered three consecutive defeats since November 2007. • Rangers have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last nine matches - the longest current such run in the Championship. • Mikele Leigertwood is set to make his 100th league appearance for the club. MOST RECENT MEETING QPR 0-2 West Brom (4 May 2008) West Brom scorers: Kim 53, Brunt 77. newsvote.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_1/8404880.stm

From WBA Official Site
West Bromwich Albion Official Site - Di Matteo expects focussed Hoops - ROBERTO Di Matteo reckons QPR's off-the-field issues will have little impact on the Hoops' performance tonight (ko 7.45pm) - and has tipped them to surge back into the promotion-chasing pack.
Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham will be in charge of the West London side at The Hawthorns following boss Jim Magilton's suspension.
And they will be desperate to end a poor run which has yielded one point from the last four games and seen them slump to 14th in the Coca-Cola Championship table.
Di Matteo says QPR have enough talent in their ranks to halt their slide and claims his troops will have to be on their mettle in front of the live TV cameras if they are going to close the gap on leaders Newcastle to five points.
"Chris Hughton was not in permanent charge of Newcastle at the start of the season and that didn't have much of an impact on them," said the head coach, who confirmed vice-captain Jonas Olsson will take the armband in the absence of the suspended Scott Carson.
"Once players get out onto the pitch, they do their business, their jobs.
"But I don't know whether QPR's situation will galvanise them or not because I've never been in that situation as a player or manager.
"What I can say is that the table changes almost on a weekly basis, with teams going in and out of the play-off positions and others getting closer to the top two.
"It will be a long, hard season and things will change.
"I definitely thought before Tuesday that Cardiff would be one of the contenders and I think QPR will be.
"They are all definitely still in the mix up."
Former loan signing Jay Simpson, who scored twice in 17 Baggies appearances last season, returns to The Hawthorns in a rich vein of form having already netted eight times this term.
But Di Matteo says the Arsenal striker isn't the Hoops' only goal threat.
"Simpson is having a good season," he added.
"He is a good player and is dangerous with his pace and finishing.
"His link-up play with Routledge is very good and he's got very technical players alongside him who can put the ball in for him, like Buzsaky and Taarabt."
A return to winning ways would re-establish Albion's five-point cushion over third place.
And Di Matteo says it is important his side solely focus on their own business.
"Newcastle have been on a great run and, although they were held on Saturday, seem to have been winning games quite easily," added the Italian.
"Our target is to go up - whether we do it in first place, second place or through the play-offs.
"What is important is the end result.
"Our defeat against Cardiff felt a little bit like taking a step back but I also felt that before Tuesday we had made two steps forward in many ways and for many reasons.
"When you're progressing and developing, you have to move forward but you're also going to move backward sometimes.
"That's when you have to reassess everything.
"You have to start working on the basics again, hopefully start moving forward and kick on from there.
"I guess it's all part of a long season." WBA
And could-have-been a QPR Man, Simon Cox WBA Official Site - Cox wants fresh start against Rangers SIMON Cox is hoping to banish the memories of Albion's 2-0 defeat by Cardiff by beating another of their promotion rivals, QPR, tonight (ko 7.45pm).
The Baggies striker revealed the players got things off their chest after their six-game unbeaten run came to an end on Tuesday.
And Roberto Di Matteo's second-placed men are eager to get back on track with a victory over the Hoops to reopen their five-point advantage on nearest rivals the Bluebirds and Nottingham Forest, who both secured 1-0 away wins over Middlesbrough and Swansea respectively at the weekend.
A Hawthorns win would also see the Baggies close the gap to five points on leaders Newcastle after they drew 2-2 at Barnsley.
"It is never easy in the Championship," said Cox, who is enjoying his longest-ever run of games at this level.
"I have got to know that and a lot of our lads knew it already.
"Every game is a tough game and we just hit a team who were probably coming back into form having hit a bit of a bad run lately.
"They won 1-0 the weekend before and then beat us - that might kick-start them.
"But we need to win tonight and maybe pull away from them if they are one of the teams chasing us.
"For the last five or six weeks we have been playing really well and when we got to Tuesday I think the Derby game took a lot more out of us than we probably expected.
"Another tough game on Tuesday was probably a little bit too soon for us but we had to play it.
"We've had a look at Tuesday's game and we've had a chat about it.
"It was a good chat and we said we had had a good five or six weeks and Tuesday was just a little speed bump on the road to promotion.
"It's one game and one result that isn't going to really do anything to our season.
"If we can win tonight then we will be back on the pace."
Rangers have slipped to 14th place after taking just one point from their last 12 - shipping 12 goals in the process.
And manager Jim Magilton is currently suspended, pending an internal inquiry, leaving youth team managerial duo Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham in temporary charge of first-team duties.
But the Londoners are the 33-goal fourth joint-top scorers in the division and victory over Albion would lift them to within a point of the play-off places.
"I watched their game against Watford on TV and they played well," Cox added.
"They were unlucky not to get the result and whatever happened afterwards is being dealt with in-house.
"It's nothing to do with us.
"We will prepare right and hopefully get back to winning ways.
"Hopefully they won't challenge us.
"Hopefully we'll be away up the table before they can catch us.
"But they are still a good side with good players.
"Everything has happened at QPR over the last two seasons and we would all like that kind of money thrown into a club.
"They have brought in good players and hopefully they will be alright, but not at the expense of us." WBA

MATCHDAY PREVIEW: BAGGIES Posted on: Mon 14 Dec 2009 Rangers will be under the spotlight of the live Sky Sports cameras for a second Monday evening on the spin, when they travel to promotion-chasing West Bromwich Albion in the Coca Coca Championship tonight. Despite a 2-0 reverse at The Hawthorns last Tuesday versus Cardiff City, Albion currently occupy second place in the second tier, as Roberto Di Matteo looks to guide the Baggies back to the Promised Land of the Premier League in his first season in charge. In what promises to be a lively encounter, the R's will look to get back to winning ways under the stewardship of Caretaker duo Steve Gallen and Marc Bircham, for a first win in five. Team News There are no fresh injury worries for Rangers to contend with for their trip to the Midlands. Steven Reid (hamstring) is out, but Matt Connolly could return following a recent pelvic injury. While Lee Cook nears a return to the First Team after some months out with a knee injury, Gavin Mahon and Martin Rowlands (both knee) remain long-term absentees. For Albion, Luke Moore is a doubt after picking up a thigh strain in their 2-2 draw at Derby County last weekend, as is Youssouf Mulumbu, who clocked up a knee injury in midweek against Cardiff. West Brom goalkeeper Dean Kiely will make his first league start of the season as Scott Carson is suspended. Previous EncounterWest Bromwich Albion 3, QPR 3 Coca-Cola Championship - October 31st 2006 It was a Halloween thriller at The Hawthorns as Rangers stole a share of the points from a dominant and attacking Albion. West Brom had strolled in to a 2-0 lead through Nathan Ellington and Diomansy Kamara, but Damion Stewart's stoppage time strike just before half-time gave Rangers hope. Kevin Gallen's second half strike gave Rangers yet more reason to believe there was something to be gained from the contest, only for Kamara to strike again to restore Albion's lead. But it was second half substitute Marc Nygaard's 77th minute finish which gave Rangers a share of the spoils. Pre-match Talk Caretaker Manager Steve Gallen: "It's business as usual and we're all preparing for our trip to West Brom. "We'll give our all for the Club, as we always have done, and fingers crossed we can start with a victory on Monday." West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo: "We'll have to start over again now. "We're at the point where we had a good run - now we start from scratch again." Birmingham Mail Why West Brom boss manager Roberto Di Matteo is unruffled by rivals (team news) Dec 14 2009 by Christopher Lepkowski, Birmingham Mail ROBERTO Di Matteo is not concerned with Newcastle United’s increasing gap at the top of the Championship – as long as his Baggies side keep collecting enough points to keep themselves in the top two. Albion now find themselves eight points behind Chris Hughton’s side, who drew at Barnsley on Saturday. Albion’s gap over third-placed Cardiff City has also been cut to just two points but Di Matteo is only concerned about his own team’s form. He is confident they can maintain their presence at the top of the division as they prepare for tonight’s visit of Queens Park Rangers. “Newcastle are doing well at the moment and they have been on a great run and seem to be winning games quite easily,” said Di Matteo, who expects to have Jerome Thomas and Luke Moore back for tonight’s game. “Our target is to go up, whether we do it in first place, second place or through the play-offs. “What is important is the end result. Tuesday night felt a little bit like making a step back but I also felt that before Tuesday, we had made two steps forward in many ways and for many reasons. “When you’re progressing and developing, you have to move forwards but you’re also going to move backwards sometimes. “You have to reassess everything and then again start working on the basics, hopefully start moving forward and kick on from there again. “I guess it’s all part of a long season.” Di Matteo is not expecting an adverse reaction from QPR, despite their much-publicised problems during the last week. “It didn’t have much of an impact with Newcastle at the start of the season,” he added. “Once you get out on to the pitch, you do your business, do your job. “I don’t know if it galvanises you or not because I’ve never been in that situation as a player or manager. “It will be a long, hard season and things will change. I definitely thought before Tuesday that Cardiff would be one of the contenders and I think QPR will be. “They are all definitely still in the mix up there.” ALBION: Carson, Kiely, Zuiverloon, Cech, Mattock, Meite, Olsson, Martis, Jara, Dorrans, Mulumbu, Brunt, Thomas, Teixeira, Cox, Moore, Bednar, Wood, Reid, www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/west-bromwich-albion-fc/west-bromwich-albion-fc-news/2009/12/14/why-west-brom-boss-manager-roberto-di-matteo-is-unruffled-by-rivals-team-news-97319-25385881/
