Makes you wonder how much a 25-30,000 new stadium would cost QPR
Morecambe Official Site - Chairman gives stadium update
Posted on: Tue 01 Dec 2009
The full cost of Morecambe Football Club's new stadium has been revealed for the first time.
Shrimps' chairman Peter McGuigan says the new development on Westgate is costing in the region of £12m. That figure includes all aspects of the development including acquiring the land, drainage work, building the access routes, developing the artificial training pitches and the stadium itself.
Mr McGuigan has released an update on the development and says he is "excited'' by the plans for the stadium and the surrounding development.
He said: "The ground, and the community facilities surrounding it, will look absolutely fantastic and the great news is that despite all the recent poor weather everything is going to plan and we are scheduled to move into the stadium in July 2010.
"The ground has a 6,000 capacity with 2,000 seats which is the requirement for both League 2 and League 1. The pitch will be seeded in March which our advisors say is plenty of time to make sure we have a top quality playing surface ready for the new season.
"There have been rumours about the ground only being three sides but that is untrue. The ground will be four sided although the side opposite the main stand will be uncovered at this stage. It will be a fantastic venue with a hospitality and conference suite that can cater for 300 people and six executive boxes that we will be looking to fill for our home games.''
Mr McGuigan also stressed the community benefits to the new stadium with new sporting facilities and the creation of a number of jobs.
He said: "As well as the main ground there will be one full size state of the art FA standard artificial training pitch and a five-a-side pitch which also includes a netball court and two tennis courts on artificial surfaces that can be booked for use by the public. There will also be first class changing facilities for these areas. The ground will also incorporate gymnasium facilities, a new club shop as well as a pub which will be open most days serving food as well.
"We want these areas to be open 360 days a year and that will mean the creation of a number of jobs which will also be a boost for the town.
"We are delighted with the progress being made and over the next few months the ground will really begin to take shape.''
A brochure detailing the sponsorship opportunities and details of how to book the community pitches will be published in early January.
Mr McGuigan said plans for a high profile opening game to mark the new stadium were at an advanced stage. He also said discussions over naming rights to the stadium were ongoing but stressed there would be recognition to club benefactor JB Christie within the development.
He added: "When completed I am confident this new development will have a significant effect on the town and will certainly raise the profile of Morecambe Football Club. "We remain an ambitious club and I look forward to the people of Morecambe and the surrounding areas giving us the necessary support required to enable us to fulfill such ambitions.''
