FA - The England U20 squad to face Montenegro has been announced.
England v Montenegro
International Match
7.45pm, Tuesday 11 August 2009
The Hawthorns, West Bromwich Albion FC
Brian Eastick has announced his squad for England’s U20 fixture against Montenegro next week – the final preparation match before the FIFA U20 World Cup in Egypt next month.
The 18-man squad to face Montenegro at The Hawthorns includes several up and coming stars, some of whom are already making their mark in the English top-flight.
Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck from Manchester United join Aston Villa duo Ciaran Clark and Marc Albrighton, who have been called upon by Manager Eastick and Coach Noel Blake with one eye on the World Cup in September.
Eastick and Blake have already enjoyed success this summer, steering England U19s to the Final of the European Championships in Ukraine where they were finished as runners-up after losing to the hosts 2-0 in Donetsk.
England kick off their World Cup campaign in Egypt against Uruguay on September 26 and Eastick is looking forward to seeing his young charges in action at WBA.
“The World Cup is all about playing against the best opposition out there so the Montenegro friendly will be a good test for our players and sets us up nicely for what we expect to be a tough tournament against very good teams,” he said.
England will also face Ghana and Uzbekistan in Group D and Eastick is hopeful that the U20s can add to an already successful summer for the country.
“It’s been a brilliant couple of months for our development teams with both the Under-21s and U19s reaching the Finals of the European Championships, while the U19 Women won their European tournament in Belarus.
“It’s important that England youth sides keep on qualifying for World and European competition as it’s a fantastic experience for our youngsters and will help them grow as players for the future.”
Tuesday’s game will be the first U20 outing since England beat Italy 2-0 at the end of March.
