QPR Official Site - GAFFER: ANOTHER GOOD WORK-OUT

Jim Magilton admitted he learnt more valuable lessons about his squad following the 2-0 victory against Kettering Town on Wednesday night.

Goals from Heidar Helguson and Alessandro Pellicori gave the R's a comfortable win, to the delight of the Rangers gaffer.

"It was a terrific workout for us against stern opposition," he told www.qpr.co.uk.

"We've got to see the trialists again; some of the other experienced lads got important game-time under their belts; and the young lads showed me glimpses of what they can do.

"All in all, it's a pleasing night - we scored two very good goals and moved the ball very well at times.

"It's all preparation for August 8th."

With every fit member of his First Team squad featuring over the last 24 hours, Magilton added: "I think the squad is very competitive now.

"We've got a good group. And it's an obvious thing to say, but the more quality you've got at the Football Club, the better."

Rangers registered their second victory in 24 hours, thanks to another impressive showing against Kettering Town.

First half goals from Heidar Helguson and trialist Alessandro Pellicori put the Blue Square Conference outfit to the sword, on a wet and windy night at Rockingham Road.

The R's were rarely tested, with the lion's share of the play taking place in the Poppies half.

Yet despite the difficult conditions, it served as another useful exercise for Jim Magilton's men, with the big kick-off against Blackpool just ten days away.

Magilton opted to blood a mixture of First Team regulars and up-and-coming young professionals for the trip to Rockingham Road.

But the R's starting XI still featured three full internationals, in the shape of Damion Stewart, Helguson and Adel Taarabt.

Trialist Andy Marshall was given another chance to impress between the sticks, with Stewart joined in the back four by skipper-for-the-night Gareth Ainsworth, Gary Borrowdale and another trialist, Gregory Vignal.

Joe Oastler was handed the deep lying midfield role, with Taarabt, Hogan Ephraim and Matteo Alberti asked to supply the ammunition for Helguson and trialist Pellicori in attack.

Mark Cooper named a strong side himself, with only one regular starter - last season's top-scorer Gareth Seddon - missing out for the Poppies.

The inclement conditions soon became monsoon-like as the opening five minutes evolved.

Undeterred, and with a nice zip on the lush Rockingham Rose playing surface, Rangers began quite positively, with Taarabt and Ephraim their usual lively selves.

The breakthrough duly arrived on 11 minutes, when Taarabt and Oastler combined on the edge of the box and the latter played a neat threaded through ball to Vignal.

With time and space to assess his options, the French trialist delivered a trademark back post cross, which Helguson nodded down and beyond the outstretched Harper.

Kettering grew in to the match midway through the half, with Jean-Paul Marca firing wide from distance.

But it was Rangers who doubled their advantage moments later, thanks to a very well-taken Pellicori goal.

Ephraim played provider, fizzing a powerful pass slightly behind the Italian front-man, who - with a terrific first touch - found the space to set himself and thrash the ball home from close range.

It was a classy take from the big striker, which would have given Magilton and co. plenty of food for thought heading in to half-time.

Full-back Lee Brown entered the fray for Rangers at the break, with Vignal - who featured for the R's at Wycombe just 24 hours earlier - making way.

Pellicori and Helguson linked up well at the start of the second half, with the latter playing in the Italian on 53 minutes, only for his shot to lack direction, as it flew wide.

Marshall was a virtual spectator in the Rangers goal, called upon just once, in the 60th minute, to catch a routine Lee Fowler free-kick.

The expected changes followed suit seconds later, with Taarabt and Helguson replaced by Romone Rose and Antonio German respectively.

Ainsworth was the rather unfortunate recipient of what could only be described as an X-rated challenge from James Jennings a minute later. But in true Ainsworth style, the midfielder-cum-defender picked himself up, without any thought of retribution.

Rangers very nearly exacted revenge in the best possible manner from the resulting free-kick, but Oastler's rising drive flew just over from fully 25-yards.

Ian Roper insists it was manager Mark Cooper's ambition that convinced him to join Kettering Town.
The 32-year-old central defender completed his move to the Elgood's Arena from Blue Square Premier rivals Luton Town ahead of last night's pre-season friendly defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

Roper, who watched on from the stands, was Cooper's top tADVERTISEMENTarget to replace Guy Branston who joined Burton Albion earlier this month.

And Roper revealed it was Cooper who sold the club to him.

"I had another year's option at Luton but I spoke to the manager here last week and he sold the club to me and I am glad to have signed now," he said.

"The gaffer was telling me about last year and how well the lads did
and it seems they would have got in the play-offs had it not been for the FA Cup run. And he is aiming for better this time.

"I know they had Guy Branston here and people may see me as a replacement but all that doesn't really bother me to be honest.

"I have been around a bit and I have hopefully played enough games to be able to come in here and slot in and do the job I am asked to do.

"It's just good to get things sorted to be honest. It's been dragging on for over a week so it's good to get it done. I will now get to know the lads and hopefully play on Saturday (against Chesterfield) and
really get into the swing of things."

Cooper was delighted to seal the deal for Roper and it was also revealed that midfielder Patrick Noubissie is also likely to complete his move to Kettering after some highly impressive displays in pre-season.

The Poppies boss said: "I always felt that we needed to replace Guy Branston with a big, strong centre- back and that's what Ian Roper is.

"He has had a good career and still has plenty of time left.

"I have been after him and he won't look that pleasing on the eye but
he always seems to get a head or a foot in when it counts and I am sure he will do fine for us.

"Patrick knows the game and he's played at a high level. He always seems to be in the right position and I am very pleased with that one."

The Poppies were well beaten by a strong QPR side last night as first-half goals from Heidar Helguson and Alessandro Pellicori sealed the win for Jim Magilton's team.

And Cooper admitted: " I thought we were outplayed to be honest.

"It was disappointing but at the same time I am excited because it has given us plenty to work on ahead of the game against Chesterfield at the weekend.

"I have warned the lads not to play themselves out of the team at this stage and there were four or five who weren't at it last night."

"slick" QPR...

Kettering Official Site

Match Sponsors: T James (Electrical) Ltd

Kettering suffered their first pre-season defeat tonight at the hands of a slick Queens Park Rangers side who won the game comfortably by two goals to nil. The goal-scorers were Heidar Helguson on 11 minutes and Alessandro Pellicori after 23 minutes. The game was played in heavy and sometimes torrential rain and the skills shown in those conditions was a credit to both teams.

Teams:

Kettering Town:

1 Lee Harper
2 Nicky Eaden
3 James Jennings
4 Patrick Noubissie
5 Exodus Geohaghon
6 John Dempster (Greg Taylor 46)
7 Francis Green
8 Lee Fowler (Darren Wrack 67)
9 Damian Spencer (Jamie Yates 76)
10 Jean-Paul Marna (Danny Thomas 46)
11 Andre Boucaud (Ryan Beswick 73)

Queens Park Rangers:

1 Andy Marshall
2 Gareth Ainsworth (Ed Harris 73)
3 Damion Stewart
4 Joe Oastler
5 Gregory Vignal (Lee Brown)
6 Gary Borrowdale
7 Hogan Ephraim (Antonio German 60)
8 Matteo Alberti
9 Heidar Helguson (Ramone Rose 60)
10 Alessandro Pellicori (Josh Parker 73)
11 Adel Taarabt (Danny Davenport 76)

--------------------------------------------

Queens Park Rangers dominated the first half of this game with their slick pass and move game, and seemed to adapt much better to the conditions.

The first goal on 11 minutes saw Gregory Vignal’s cross from the left met by Heidar Helguson’s head and the firm downward header easily beat Lee Harper in the Kettering goal. Soon after Helguson tested Harper with a low shot which the keeper held.

Kettering’s first effort on 22 minutes saw Jean-Paul Marna’s right foot shot skim wide of Andy Marshall’s left post. A minute later it was 2-0 as Alessandro Pellicori somehow wriggled free of his two markers and slotted in from close range.

Kettering’s best effort of the half came on 27 minutes as Damian Spencer met Lee Fowler’s free kick with a header, which was blocked. From the rebound John Dempster headed just wide.

Rangers dominated the rest of the half without creating any further clear cut chances, although Exodus Geohaghon did well to rob Helguson, just before the interval, as he shaped to shoot from 12 yards.

Half Time:

Kettering Town 0-2 Queens Park Rangers

Kettering brought on a triallist, Danny Thomas at half time and his early cross was well cleared by Gary Borrowdale.

The lively trio of Helguson and Pellicori combined well on 54 minutes, with the latter firing wide. James Jennings’ 20 yard free kick was easy for Marshall, then Jennings had to defend well to thwart Pellicori at the other end.

Borrowdale then shot narrowly over the bar as a clearance from a corner fell kindly to him. A quick free kick saw Pellicori shoot wide and then substitute Lee Brown shot over after 68 minutes.

A free kick by substitute Darren Wrack on 75 minutes was charged down by the defensive wall, before Francis Green got his shot in- only to see it blocked and the rebound saw Greg Taylor’s header saved by Marshall.

0n 85 minutes a cross deflected off of Greg Taylor and Lee Harper just saved only to see the ball squirm away from him for a corner. From the restart James Jennings cleared off the line.

A special mention to the 642 supporters who braved the awful weather tonight and thanks for their support
