Ex-Carlisle Utd player Paul Murray hoping Wembley Way leads to Brunton Park FOOTBALL By Jon Colman
Former Carlisle United hero Paul Murray says the prospect of returning to Brunton Park with Shrewsbury next season is a huge incentive as he prepares for tomorrow’s League Two play-off final.
Paul MurrayCarlisle-born Murray will play at Wembley for the first time in his career as he aims to inspire the Shrews to victory over Gillingham in front of 60,000 fans (kick-off 3pm).
Former United manager Paul Simpson and city-born striker Grant Holt also have key roles to play for the Shropshire club this weekend.
And Murray, who will start the game in central midfield, says there is no bigger carrot than the chance of facing Carlisle in the league next term.
“All the players went to see a psychologist the other day and he was asking us about the rewards to look forward to if we got promoted,” said the former England Under 21 and ‘B’ international.
“Most of the lads were talking about playing at Charlton and Leeds, but not me. Playing at Carlisle is what I’m looking at. It is a big incentive for me. I’m a Cumbrian lad, I’ve always had a good rapport with the fans and it would be great to come back to play against Carlisle at Brunton Park next season.
“I know the gaffer would love to take a team back there, and it would be nice for Holty to play against his home-town team.”
Former Blues trainee Stephen Hindmarch is also on Shrewsbury’s books but is unlikely to make the squad for tomorrow’s high-stakes game.
Murray, who joined the Shrews from Gretna last summer, has put an injury-plagued career behind him to get through 35 games for the New Meadow outfit this season, including their dramatic play-off semi-final penalties victory over Bury.
And the man who came through David Wilkes’ youth ranks at Carlisle, and rejoined the Blues for a second spell in the 2007/8 season, is relishing the chance to play at Wembley for the first time. “I went to Wembley with Carlisle in 1995 for the Auto Windscreens Shield, but I wasn’t involved,” said the 32-year-old.
“And by the time they got there again two years later, I had left for QPR. I’ve been in the game for more than 15 years but haven’t got to Wembley until now.
“There will be nerves and excitement, but when the whistle goes it is all about focusing on your job and winning the game.
“Nobody wants to miss out on promotion having got so close and we’re confident we can do it.”
Ian Morris, who made six loan appearances for United towards the end of last season, is expected to figure for Sc**thorpe against Millwall in Sunday’s League One play-off final (kick-off 1pm).
Morris, who remains a potential transfer target for Carlisle manager Greg Abbott, scored the winning penalty in the Iron’s penalty shoot-out win over MK Dons in the semi-finals.
