Hate to break the stereotype, but Nick Skelton left school without qualifications and worked his way up the equestrian rank, shovelling shite as he went. And he isn't atypical.
Sorry, but I hate the assumption that anyone on top of a horse must be financially privileged. |

Just because he's thick it doesn't mean he wasn't born into money. First pony aged 18 months and educated at Bablake.
That sport is almost exclusively for the privilaged. If it was open to all we'd have won gold a long time before now and we wouldn't be fielding OAP's. |
|
Plenty of kids have ponies and aren't from privileged families. The private education had absolutely no bearing on his equestrian career.
I know 2 youngsters who have a very good chance of representing GB in the future and neither of them come from privileged backgrounds either.
Don't give in to stereotype's and assumptions.

It's not an assumption. Yes in rural areas some kids have ponies but that's very different from the money and commitment needed to travel every weekend for competition. Becoming a top level showjumper is prohibitively expensive for nearly all but the very wealthy and it's run by an old boy's network. Unless things have completely changed in recent years it's more about how big your family's bank balance is and who you know/what school you attended than an individuals talent.

3 steps on the podium..plenty to go around.
Pretty brutal event this. Obviously the Ironman type competitions are much longer in length but these guys really go for it.

Sorry, but that's absolute rubbish!
If you have the talent, there's plenty of sponsorship out there to get you to where you want to go.
To say that, in rural areas, some kids have ponies is a massive misconception. Riding facilities are out there in abundance and available for everyone at very little cost.
Skelton's school had absolutely no bearing on his equestrian career as I've already demonstrated.
As I said, assumptions and prejudice and a lack of knowledge is what pisses me off!

How are those facts spurious when I have a personal knwledge and insight into something you appear to know nothing about?

I dont know anything about horse riding either, so I looked it up on the first google offering http://www.chestnutsridingschool.co.uk/f....ng-cost-so-much It seems that according to this riding school that start up costs are Ł6770, ongoing costs per year are Ł4326 and you may have to buy a horse as well. This is not to support one view or another and I wouldnt normally bother, but hey, theres no matches to worry about and it's not tea time yet.

CHRIS HOY - another great ride!
Unlucky Vicky, enjoy your retirement.
Seven golds out of ten & it could easily have been nine!

Incredible ride by Hoy. His power and endurance was awesome. No surprise the ruling went against GB/Vicky but if anyone else deserved a gold it was Meares. She's a fantastic cyclist and came so close in previous games.

Interesting backstory.
Nick Hope, BBC Sport at the diving at the Aquatics Centre
"At 19, GB's Chris Mears is the youngest diver in this individual 3m springboard final and after the first round, he is joint eighth.
"But let me put Mears' achievement into perspective. Three years ago, he was given just a 5% chance of living after his spleen ruptured and he suffered a seven hour seizure.
"The fact that the teenager has been able to become a professional athlete, let alone one competing in an Olympic final is a phenomenal achievement."

BMX starts today.
It would be great if Shanaze could put the ghosts of Bejing to rest.

Liam Phillips may also have a shout but he had a really nasty crash at the Worlds in May. Hopefully his bones are all mended and he hasn't lost his bottle.
