Soccernet Roundup

"...08.17 BST Another newspaper's take on the Carroll affair. From the Mirror: "Andy Carroll will be offered a pay-rise to £100,000-a-week to change his mind and join West Ham."

08.10 BST More on this Carroll craziness: "Sam Allardyce’s Hammers are now ready to pay Carroll, 23, his current £90,000-a-week wages over EIGHT YEARS."

08.00 BST Good morning. An absolute cracker of a rumour to kick off proceedings. The Sun shrieks with glee: "West Ham have offered Andy Carroll a mind-boggling £36million contract in the hope of luring him away from Liverpool."

STATEMENT FROM ADMINISTRATORS

Administrators Begbies-Traynor now talking to other interestedparties

Administrators Begbies-Traynor, acting on behalf of PortVale Football Club, have revealed that they are now talking to other interestedparties after Keith Ryder’s proposed takeover did not complete on Monday.

However, Bob Young, on behalf of Begbies-Traynor, said thatMr Ryder remained as one of the potential candidates to take over at Port Valeand added that he had been assured by Mr Ryder that he was still workingtowards a conclusion.

Said Mr Young: “We feel that we have given Keith every opportunityto complete and it is regrettable that this hasn’t happened. Keith assures methat he still feels he can complete the deal and we would welcome that.

“We initially gave him a deadline of the end of June, whichwas then extended to July 6. We feel this was sufficient time and the deal hasn’thappened.

“As a result of this, we are now offering the opportunity tobuy the club to other groups and I have already had interest from a number ofparties.

“If someone comes back to us with the funding first, then wewill obviously take that forward. We have to have the best interests of PortVale at heart and this is now becoming time-critical.”

Chelsea's indifferent pre-season continued with a 3-1 defeat to Brighton. Vicente celebrates after bringing Brighton back on level terms
Frank Lampard gave the visitors the lead in the first half after he finished a Ramires cross before the hosts struck back after 36 minutes through Vicente.

An error from Raul Meireles let in Will Buckley and although Petr Cech saved his effort, Giles Barnes was on hand to put the south-coast side a goal up, before Andrew Crofts sealed the victory late in the second half as the Blues slipped to their third defeat of pre-season.

West Brom needed a late equaliser from Peter Odemwingie to avoid defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. The hosts took the lead through Nejc Pecnik after 34 minutes with a cross-cum-shot which looped over Ben Foster before the Nigerian international scored in the 88th minute.

Championship side Nottingham Forest recorded a 3-1 win over top tier club Aston Villa at the City Ground.

After a goalless first half, Lewis McGugan netted from the edge of the area after 71 minutes to put the home side in front before captain for the day Barry Bannan equalised for Villa with a free-kick two minutes later. Marcus Tudgay was on target after 77 minutes to put Forest back in front before McGugan rounded off the scoring with five minutes left.

Premier League newcomers Reading drew 2-2 at Bournemouth. Adrian Mariappa headed home a Nicky Shorey free-kick before the Cherries equalised through Wes Thomas, who converted a Matt Tubbs cross. Hal Robson-Kanu put the visitors in front from the penalty spot but Miles Addison rescued a draw for the home side.

West Ham, who before the match at Ipswich had already lost three pre-season friendlies, fell behind after 15 minutes when Michael Chopra netted from the spot.

Summer signing from Nottingham Forest Luke Chambers put the hosts two goals up four minutes later with a header. Matt Taylor pulled one back for the visitors after 73 minutes with a long range effort, but Jason Scotland sealed a 3-1 win for the Suffolk side seven minutes from time.

And the other Premier League new boys, Southampton, beat last season's top flight basement boys Wolves 2-0 at St Mary's. Saints took a first half lead when Billy Sharp converted an Adam Lallana cross for his fourth goal of pre-season, before Jason Puncheon doubled the lead midway through the second half when he drove into the net from the edge of the area.

Sunderland followed up a 1-0 pre-season defeat to Hartlepool with a 2-0 reverse against Helsingborgs in Sweden.

After a goalless first half the hosts took the lead after Alfreo Finnbogason's strike hit the post then rebounded off goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and into the net. The lead was doubled after 73 minutes when a low strike eight yards out by May Mahlangu went under the Belgian.

North-east rivals Newcastle faired better as they drew 0-0 with Dutch side ADO Den Haag. Gabriel Obertan was unlucky not to find the net with a dipping volley after 24 minutes which was well saved by home stopper Gino Coutinho, while Shola Ameobi had a goal ruled out for offside after 79 minutes.

Columbus Crew player dies, aged 22

5 August 2012

Major League Soccer in the US has been rocked by news Columbus Crew midfielder Kirk Urso has died.
Columbus Crew released an official club statement on Sunday, revealing Urso passed away on Saturday night but the circumstances of the 22-year-old's death were still being determined.

The midfielder had made six appearances for the 2008 MLS Cup champions this season after he was signed in March.

He was selected as a first-round (10th overall) pick in this year's MLS Supplemental Draft by Columbus Crew.

A US representative at the FIFA under-17 World Cup held in South Korea in 2007 where he scored the winner to send his team through to the second round, Urso played college soccer at the University of North Carolina.

The midfielder spent time away from college to train with Premier League outfit Bolton Wanderers and Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

Emile Heskey is still looking for a new club this season after turning down the chance to sign for Blackpool.

The former England international has been out of contract since leaving Aston Villa at the end of last season when his contract expired and has been training with former club Wigan in recent weeks.

The 34-year-old has been linked with a move to a number of Championship sides including Blackburn, Ipswich and Hull Cityover the summer.

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway had hoped to beat them to his signature while he was in the North West with Wigan only to be turned down.

"Unfortunately he has got other things in the pipeline and he is not interested in coming to us," said Holloway. "So that is dead and buried."

The Londonist

AFC Wimbledon Plot Plough Lane Return

By Dean · August 9, 2012

Plough Lane in 2000, when it was used as a dressage training facility (possibly not true).

AFC Wimbledon have launched a bid to return to their spiritual home of Merton.

The Dons, formed in 2002 by supporters of Wimbledon FC enraged by the decision to move to Milton Keynes, have enjoyed a rapid rise through football’s lower echelons and are currently preparing for a second season in League Two. They are based at Kingsmeadow Stadium in Kingston, but a return to the club’s roots would mark the conclusion of a 20-year peripatetic journey for fans who, after the club’s Plough Lane home was deemed unfit to be converted into an all-seater ground in line with the Taylor report’s safety requirements, had to endure a decade as tenants at rivals Crystal Palace before the Milton Keynes saga saw their side decanted from the capital. The old stadium itself has since been turned into housing.

The proposal is for a 12,000-seater venue on the site of Wimbledon Greyhound Track, expandable (should the fanbase require it) to 22,000, although they are likely to face significant competition for the land, not to mention opposition from those who want to preserve on of the capital’s few remaining (and Britain’s oldest) dog tracks.

AFC join the growing number of London clubs who could be moving over the next few years, including Chelsea, Tottenham, QPR, Crystal Palace, West Ham and Leyton Orien

In the old days, would have worried might have been...

Belfast Telegraph -Holloway fury at Phillips 'tap-up'

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway has confirmed the club are making an official complaint over the 'tapping up' of winger Matt Phillips.
Holloway was furious after an unnamed Barclays Premier League side contacted the player's agent without making an official approach to the club.

"Somebody has made an illegal approach and we can prove that," Holloway told the club's official website. "I'm not very happy about that and the Football League and the Premier League will be informed about that."

Holloway added: "The boy is a fantastic young man - we've had a good chat about it me and him - and he's as committed as ever to play for Blackpool and play well with his team-mates who help him look good."

The club confirmed that the matter is now in the hands of the necessary parties to investigate the matter further.

Meanwhile, Holloway admitted the chances of QPR striker DJ Campbell returning to the club are remote. The two parties were reported to be in discussions, but Holloway said the move is now unlikely due to financial reasons.

Campbell, 30, quit Bloomfield Road to join Rangers last summer following the club's relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

"I don't want to tell our fans that we might get DJ Campbell back. I don't think there's a chance in a million at the moment of doing that, because of his club, what they're looking for and how much they're paying him at the moment," Holloway told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"He's got another couple of years on that so does he need to take a cut or go backwards? I don't think so. Will they pay him some of the rest of the money? I don't think so.

"Why should he lose out? Whether they want him or not, they have to honour the contract. It's nobody else's fault other than what QPR decided to pay him when they took him on."

Rowan Vine Set to Start for St Johnstone...

Rowan Vine ready to start

Aug 10 2012 by Gordon Bannerman, Perthshire Advertiser Friday
http://www.perthshireadvertiser.co.uk/pe....73103-31588617/

ROWAN Vine has been placed on stand-by for his first SPL start and manager Steve Lomas is hoping to unveil another exciting signing before the trip to face Motherwell, writes Gordon Bannerman.

The Perth club was locked in negotiations yesterday with a big name striker.

Lomas was keen to keep his identity under wraps but if the target signs on the dotted line it will have rivals casting envious eyes in the direction of McDiarmid Park.

And last night the club was awaiting a verdict after lodging an appeal against Gregory Tade’s red card at Tynecastle.

Vine, the recent arrival from QPR is set to face Motherwell at Fir Park in a weekend billed “Sell Out Saturday†after a summer of crisis headlines enveloping the game in Scotland.

Lomas is also awaiting fitness reports on defender Frazer Wright and midfielder Murray Davidson, who have both missed training this week.

Kevin Moon missed out on a bounce game against Hearts because the match had to be switched to a synthetic surface and the midfielder’s groin has to be protected, and David Robertson resumed training yesterday. Stevie May and Vine got a run against Dundee United in a 1-0 U20 league win.

The Saints boss is keen to add to his squad before heading west.

He said: “If we did get the three I want it would be brilliant and I really believe we can go on to have a good season.â€

While the Tade appeal was lodged at the start of the week, Lomas has had to prepare in the event of it being unsuccessful. The Perth club did not believe the offence should have been regarded as violent conduct warranting a two game ban.

But Vine can step-in after an impressive 50 minutes against Hearts.

“Rowan hasn’t played a lot and adrenaline gets you through games at first. But it is up to us to work on his core fitness. I know he is looking forward to the challenge here.

“He is a slender boy and isn’t carrying weight. He will step in for Gregory if required.â€

Lomas knows Saints will have their work cut out to get their season up and running, with statisticians pointing out they haven’t won in their last 10 competitive games, stretching back to March last season.

“We will take the positives from the Hearts display and we know there are things we have to improve on. We made plenty chances but we have to take them when they come along. Goals change football matches,†stressed Lomas.

“But the attitude of my boys is never in doubt. They can have off days or poor days but we always get the same level of commitment and effort week in week out.â€

Lomas believes Saints will have to match a high tempo from the home team and he is an admirer of a settled side which has enjoyed regular forays into Europe in recent seasons.

But he believes his players can reap rewards by emulating last week’s second half performance levels for the full 90 in Motherwell.

THE Scottish Communities League Cup Second Round Draw takes place today but St Johnstone don’t feature after their top six finish last season.

THE bus for 'Sell Out Saturday' at Fir Park will leave McDiarmid Park at noon with The Muirton Suite open from 11am for hot filled rolls and drinks. Phone McDiarmid Park on 459090 (or John on 561020 outwith office hours) to book seats or for more information.

THE SPL has announced a partnership with YouTube, the world’s number one video sharing website, which will see match highlights and exclusive content available for YouTube viewers in the UK and around the world for the next three seasons.

The ‘splofficial’ channel will also cover pre and post match reaction from players and managers, as well as behind-the-scenes features, representing an exciting new means for fans to engage with their club.

The ‘splofficial’ channel can be accessed via the following URL: http://www.youtube.com/splofficial. Match highlights will be available for supporters in the UK to view from 6pm on Sundays.

Lose three on the trot and you're out, Blackburn warn Steve Kean

• Blackburn's new adviser hands manager Kean stark ultimatum
• Steve Kean under pressure to deliver at Championship club

Steve Kean will be sacked if Blackburn lose three matches on the trot, according to the club's global advisor, Shebby Singh.

The former Malaysia international was hired by the Championship club after relegation from the Premier League and he has issued a stark warning to the manager, blamed by many of the club's fans for Rovers fall from the elite.

Singh said: "I am here to be successful and I know what it needs to get out of the Championship and so far nobody has disagreed with me at the club.

"For me, it is all about results. For me, after three games if we have dropped nine points, we would only have a 50% chance of getting promoted, so everyone has to start from day one.

"Asked if Kean could be sacked, he replied: "If we lost three games on the trot, definitely."

Blackburn Apologize...

GUARDIAN

Blackburn adviser apologises to Steve Kean and Morten Gamst Pedersen
• Shebby Singh called Rovers winger Pedersen a 'pensioner'
• 'My blunt honesty sometimes upsets people,' says Singh
Share

Shebby Singh has issued a public apology to Steve Kean and Morten Gamst Pedersen after saying that the Blackburn Rovers manager would be sacked if he lost three games and calling the 30-year-old winger a "pensioner".

Speaking at an open meeting organised by the Blackburn Rovers Action Group, the club's global adviser Singh told supporters Kean would be sacked if he lost three games in a row but it was the personal comments directed at Pedersen that caused the most upset.

Kean and Pedersen were so furious with Singh that the Malaysian was forced to apologise to both men at a squad meeting. In addition, he deemed it necessary to make a public apology through the Lancashire Telegraph.

Singh had said Kean's promises of a strong promotion challenge had to be taken "with a pinch of salt", while he likened Pedersen, who has been at the club for eight years, to a "pensioner".

He said: "I would like to extend an apology to Steve Kean because some things were said on Saturday. I think they would have hurt Steve Kean's feelings and for that I sincerely apologise.

"I would also like to apologise to Morten Gamst Pedersen for what was said. There are no excuses and Morten is a great character.

"My blunt honesty sometimes upsets people and sometimes rubs people up the wrong way. I am making efforts to bring the club back to the fans and in trying to do that I have gone too far. I am trying to find the middle ground."

Blackburn's Indian owners, Venky's, appointed the 51-year-old former Malaysia defender in June and one of Singh's tasks is to act as a go-between for Venky's and Kean. He has a reputation for forthright views earned while working as a football pundit for Asian TV.

"For me, it is all about results. For me, after three games if we have dropped nine points, we would only have a 50% chance of getting promoted, so everyone has to start from day one.

"Asked if Kean could be sacked, he replied: "If we lost three games on the trot, definitely."

Metro - Ashley Cole channels Olympic spirit by giving away his medal to a fan

Ashley Cole, all is forgiven. It seems like the Olympic spirit has even reached the Chelsea left-back, after he did something that could indeed inspire a generation.

Cole – who once shot a Chelsea trainee with an air rifle from five feet away – has given away his Community Shield runners-up medal to a young Manchester City fan.

After being unable to prevent Chelsea losing to the Premier League champions 3-2, the England star handed over the gong to a seven-year-old in the stands.

The lucky fan, Bailey McColgan, said: ‘I’ve shown the medal to everyone [at school].

‘They all said it was very heavy and they that they like the look of it. It’s made me feel super.’

Cole may have recently riled Arsenal fans with his Twitter proclamations about winning medals since leaving the Gunners, but he was willing to do without this one in his cabinet.

So hats off to you, good sir – or should we be incensed that you have disrespected such a prestigious competition?

Maybe he wants to soften up Man City and see out his career at Man city on 300 grand a week with 100 days sick leave and 200 days holiday?

Or is that a bit far fetched.

Wigan have got two decent replacements in Kone and one other i forgot , possibly will lose Moses as well as Rodellega to Fulhan .

Kone scored some 15 goals last season , good buy for 3 million.

I really hope they do lose Moses. Just as much as I hope Fulham will lose Demsey and Dembele. ;)

Fulham and Wigan are two teams I would like to see below us on the table from the start this year.
