Manchester City outcast Johnson must take wage cut to land Sunderland move

Manchester City forward Adam Johnson’s wages are threatening to scupper Sunderland’s attempts to sign him this summer.
Martin O’Neill wants to land the England winger ahead of next season, however the 24-year-old will have to take a pay cut to return to the north-east.

Limited chances: Man City winger Adam Johnson
Johnson earns in the region of £85,000-per-week at the Etihad Stadium, but Sunderland’s wage ceiling is around £60,000-per-week.

And early indications are that Johnson would be unwilling to take such hit in his wages.
Nevertheless, O’Neill is still keen to pursue a move for Johnson and could look into the prospect of loaning him if a permanent deal is not financially viable.
Johnson only signed a new long-term deal contract at City last November but has fallen out of favour with manager Roberto Mancini.
Sunderland have already contacted City about their interest in Johnson ahead of the new season.

Jussi Jaaskelainen agrees terms with Wet Spam which takes them out of the race for all the other keepers we're associated with.

Leeds United: Business as usual - Warnock

By Leon Wobschall
Published on Friday 15 June 2012 08:58

It’s business as normal – that’s the message from Neil Warnock, who has brushed aside fresh speculation regarding his future at Leeds United.

Rumours circulated yesterday morning that Warnock would leave Elland Road this week, but the Whites boss insists he remains focused on his plans to bolster his squad for the 2012-13 season.

Warnock’s plans to dramatically shake up United’s squad are effectively on hold as ongoing discussions regarding possible investment take place at the club.

Click here to register and have your say on the Leeds United stories and issues that matter to you

The 63-year-old, known to be frustrated at the club failing to make headway on the transfer front since the capture of Jason Pearce in early May, flew out to Monaco for lengthy discussions with United chairman Ken Bates on Wednesday – presumably to seek some re-assurances.

Warnock said: “The main thing I’m concentrating on is the squad and what we can do to strengthen.

“I know what I’m looking to achieve before the start of the season to give us the opportunity of finishing as high as we can and that process is ongoing.”

United are in the market for several players, including the likes of QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, Derby’s out-of-contract midfielder Paul Green and Leicester full-back Lee Peltier.

Kenny wants his future resolved by the end of June and while he strongly favours a move to Leeds and a link-up with former boss Warnock, there is rival interest in the 34-year-old.

Boro target Emmanuel Ledesma is close to a deal
by Anthony Vickers, Evening GazetteJun 15 2012Comments (45) Recommend (10)

The Argentine schemer, 23, caught the eye in an impressive end to the season at League One Walsall with four goals in 10 league games in his second spell at the Bescott Stadium.

He is one of the names on Boro boss Tony Mowbray’s summer shopping list and an agent of the former QPR man has revealed talks are at an advanced stage.

“A deal is close,” Ledesma’s representative Luca Cominelli told Sky Sports. “About 90% I would say.”

Ledesma has attracted attention from other Championship clubs, including Nottingham Forest, while Walsall have offered a new deal in a bid to keep him.

But Boro look to have won the race for his signature.

Ledesma started his career at Italian Seria A side Napoli but failed to break through.

He enjoyed a successful year long loan at QPR in 2008-09, playing 17 league games, netting once, plus he scored a hat-trick at home to Carlisle in the League Cup.

He has also had spells at three Italian clubs and one in Argentina between two spells at Walsall.

I still think he could do well for us. There was potential but the side wasn't designed for him or Parejo. Whom also could have done a job.

Not sure why Reading have been able to get this guy, I thought there'd be a queue of top teams looking at him

Reading in the race to sign Pavel Pogrebnyak
Jun 17 2012 By Dave Kidd

READING are confident of pulling off a stunning transfer coup by signing Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak.

Get a Free Trial with Netflix the Movie streaming service
The impending deal is proof that the Royals' new Russian owner Anton Zingarevich has the clout to compete in the Premier League.

Sources at the Madejski Stadium believe a deal for Pogrebnyak, currently in the Russian squad at Euro 2012, is almost complete.

Pogrebnyak, 28, joined FULHAM on loan from STUTTGART in January with a view to a permanent move.

And after scoring six goals in eight games for the west London club, boss Martin Jol was keen to keep hold of the big target man.

But although Fulham wanted to complete the deal, they will not pay over the odds for the player.

And Reading have now come up with an eye-watering wage deal for the player and his representatives.

Baggies in Foster talks with Blues
Posted on: Mon 18 Jun 2012

DAN Ashworth has revealed Albion are in talks with Blues to sign Ben Foster.

The Baggies Sporting & Technical Director has also rubbished media reports linking Jonas Olsson with moves to West Ham and Tottenham.

"We're in talks with Birmingham City about Ben Foster," said Ashworth.

"The price has to be right for us - and Blues.

"I'm hopeful we can find common ground."

He added: "There is no truth in any of the stories about Jonas Olsson.

"We certainly haven't heard anything from anyone.

"Jonas is still under contract here, he's an important player and an important part of our future."

Mohamed Diame to join West Ham from Wigan on a three-year deal

Midfielder Mohamed Diame has turned down a new contract offer from Wigan to join West Ham on a three-year deal.
The 25-year-old Senegal international will sign for the Hammers on July 1 when his deal at Wigan expires.
Diame is West Ham's third signing since returning to the Premier League, following keepers Jussi Jaaskelainen and Stephen Henderson to Upton Park.
He said: "I am very excited to have joined the club. I am looking forward to showing what I can do on the pitch."
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce said: "His potential is really good and he is ready to go and compete in the first team straight away because he's had three years in the Premier League already."

Now set for Spurs

Metro - Gylfi Sigurdsson set to snub Liverpool and sign for Spurs

Tottenham have poached Gylfi Sigurdsson from under the noses of Premier League rivals Liverpool, and are said to be just days away from completing an £8million deal.

Swansea City's Gylfi Sigurdsson U-turn: Sigurdsson looks Spurs-bound (Picture: PA)

The Icelandic midfielder looked nailed on for a switch to Anfield to re-join his old manager Brendan Rodgers, who signed him on loan for Swansea last season.

But Sigurdsson has reportedly performed a shock U-turn after Spurs agreed a fee with his parent club Hoffenheim.

The German outfit gave the 22-year-old a deadline until June 30th to sort out his future, and despite extensive talks with Rodgers and the Reds, Sigurdsson is believed to have decided to sign for managerless Spurs.

The former Reading starlet enjoyed a successful time under Rodgers last term at Swansea, where he scored seven goals in 19 appearances, and was even set to join the Welsh club permanently in a £6.8m deal until the Ulsterman left for Anfield.

Now it appears that Sigurdsson has once again changed his mind, and will move to White Hart Lane as a replacement for Luka Modric, who looks set to quit the club this summer.

A CLUB STATEMENT ON INVESTMENT
26 Jun 2012
Due dilligence process to be undertaken...

Further to our previous statement of the 29th May, Leeds United can confirm they have granted an exclusivity period to enable a potential investor to carry out the appropriate due diligence.

It is anticipated this will be a fairly straightforward process.

A confidentiality clause prevents the club from making any further comment. However, our discussions with them have left us very comfortable that they have the financial resources to support the club and that they will have no issues in satisfying the requirements of the Football League's Owners and Directors Test, unlike many of the previous approaches we have had to endure.

We will not be making any further announcements in the near future.

Assessing Giroud!

Guardian

Olivier Giroud could make a striking difference for Arsenal
Arsène Wenger has unearthed a gem in his latest French signing from Montpellier
Share 26

Email

Olivier Giroud has answered Arsenal's call. Photograph: Boris Horvat/AFP/Getty Images
It was back in early April when Olivier Giroud, in a question and answer session with the local daily Midi Libre, reflected on his sudden surge into the public consciousness. Montpellier stood on the brink of their first league championship, his goals sustaining Hérault's unlikely challenge against the limitless resources of the Qatari-backed Paris St Germain, and scouting reports of the forward's prowess were arching eyebrows from the Bundesliga to the Premier League.

For a player whose progression from lower leagues to top flight had been steady rather than spectacular, all the newfound attention must have felt unfamiliar. Even unnerving. "I have had my own particular path to reach this point," he had said in the spring. "Things have only really accelerated over the last few months after a rather 'linear' career. But I made sure it happened for me. When things do come off, it makes you very proud. All the effort is worth it. What has happened since has been amazing."

If that was then, Giroud must be pinching himself now. A league title winner in May, and a member of Laurent Blanc's albeit under-achieving France squad at Euro 2012 through June, the 25-year-old will formally become an Arsenal player on 1 July. Prior to arriving at the French base in Donetsk, Giroud had only ever played two games outside France – a Europa League qualifier against the Hungarians Gyori two years ago and a friendly against Germany in Bremen in February – though now he is a high-profile export, and a man whose arrival Arsène Wenger hopes will help to appease Robin van Persie. Arsenal's manager has tracked the 6ft 3in forward from afar. He does not believe a fee of £13m represents a gamble.

The club's supporters may reserve judgement for now, if only because they once pinned their hopes on Marouane Chamakh maintaining the form that had claimed Bordeaux a Ligue 1 title upon his arrival at the Emirates Stadium. Yet the comparisons with the Moroccan should end there. Giroud feels different. The boy who grew up in a well-off Catholic family in the Rhene-Alpes with posters of Marco van Basten and Zinédine Zidane on his bedroom wall has, like Didier Drogba before him, earned this opportunity through steady progress in the French lower leagues. It is no surprise that he spoke of his "pride" at how he had ended up in London: from the boys' team Olympique Club de Froges to Grenoble's youth academy; from a loan spell at Istres in the third tier to a move to Tours of Ligue 2.

There, alongside Laurent Koscielny, he made his mark and put a sports science degree on hold, his goals attracting interest from Celtic before Montpellier secured his services for €2m in January 2010. Last season's French golden boot at Stade de la Mosson was earned as the focal point in a surprise package of a team. Montpellier was supposed to be all about rugby union, not football league championships. They were still an amateur side in the mid-1970s. Yet a club with upper mid-table attendance figures and lower mid-table resources held off PSG's new money with a team of academy graduates and journeymen. The reality that Middle-Eastern money does not always prevail was football's romantic story of the season.

Giroud contributed 21 league goals to ensure his reputation precedes him now. On the pitch he has tremendous stature and physical presence, with his aerial ability surely to prove an asset in the Premier League, but he can be just as quick-witted and nimble in possession. His Montpellier team-mate, Jamel Saihi, has compared him favourably to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in terms of his touch and presence – there were nine assists as well last term – while pointing to his work-rate and desire to defend. His coach at La Paillade, René Girard, described his goalscoring ability as "innate", which should make an attacking trio of Van Persie, Lukas Podolski and Giroud feel mouth-watering.

"I can play as a lone forward, in partnership with a second forward, or in front of a No10," he said. "I'll adapt my game to different situations. That's my job. I've worked hard to add some explosive power to the first few metres when I make a run with or without the ball. I still need to work on my game when I have my back to goal. That's the hardest part." That acknowledgement suggests a desire and willingness to maintain his education at Arsenal, and a realisation that, despite being an international, there is plenty more still to come. Wenger will tap into that appetite to improve.

He will need time to settle. London-life will be very different to what he has grown used to back in Montpellier, where he, his father and brother would regularly take themselves off to wine tastings in Languedoc-Roussillon to stock the striker's cellar with vintages from Pic Saint-Loup and Montpeyroux. "Je suis un epicurien," he once told Le Parisien. He has also become a gay icon back home having appeared topless on the front cover of the French magazine Tetu, alongside the pull quote: "Je n'ai pas de tabou." Indeed, in a city renowned for its liberalism, he is France's metrosexual man of the moment, complete with model looks and a legion of female fans, though his focus is fixed. "I still want to learn, to progress," he has said. His arrival at Arsenal will not quench that thirst.

Ex-QPR Mahon getting a new Contract at Notts County. Good luck to him (I presume he actually PLAYS for them!)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18628202

Gavin Mahon agrees new Notts County contract

Notts County midfielder Gavin Mahon has agreed to a new one-year contract.

The 35-year-old joined in August 2011 after being released by QPR and was on a pay-as-you-play deal last season.

“I fell out of love with the game before I signed here”

Gavin Mahon

Mahon started 26 games last season but was omitted for the final few matches of the season because playing would have triggered a clause in his contract which guaranteed a permanent deal.

"It's been a strange two or three months, but it's all done now so I can get ready for pre-season," he said.

Mahon, who has also played for Brentford, Crystal Palace, Watford and Wolves, added: "I fell out of love with the game before I signed here, I'd not played for a while through injury and that was frustrating.

"But I think the fans have seen a player who gives everything he's got and tries to help the team when he plays."

Just to note that now we're in July all those transfers can officially go forward.

Will be interested where our released QPR Players end up - especially of course Borrowdale and Vine.
