If you look at Zamora's goal scoring stats (except for lower division Brighton), it's clear he's not a prolific goalscorer...He was clearly bought for a certain purpose. And I'd say he's pretty much fulfilling that. And I think we're pretty lucky to have him.... (Of course there is Hulse...and Campbell: Remember that miss against Man U...and Bothroyd...And even Helguson....
Anyway I'd bet anything Zamora will start vs Chelsea

His stats: http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=17253

Bowlesy, you make very good points, but we have to allow the poster his views even if you really find

it incomprehensible in your opinion.

Hmm...surprised most people are showing anger for the poster here! Also, Rory isn't the only one who was disappointed with his profligacy against WBA...we should have won that game, not lost it with all the chances Zamora had.

Yes, he is a target man, and he's great at holding up play, but he's also a striker and by definition that usually means that you are supposed to have some idea about how to score.

I totally agree that he needs to be partnered up with Cisse, but even so, I expect better when he is staring at the goal with only the keeper to worry about.

How comes no-one's banging on about his wages either? When Barton was out of form, that's all everyone harped on about, but Zamora's on about the same and isn't really firing.

His awareness was a little off vs Spurs, where he was stood in the box 6 yards from goal, the defence buggered off like the parting of the Red Sea, and he didn't actually do anything. Bit frustrating that one, luckily we held on!

I ain't slagging the bloke off, but I'm not gonna sit here and say he's been the worlds best player either because that just isn't the case - he could do better.

As for the body language, well I just hope that's his natural state because where as some aren't bothered what he looks like, I for one would like to think he's in the same determination boat as all the other players. In fairness he did come out to quash the rumours that he was unhappy at Loftus Road, but I can't help thinking he must be feeling a bit *facepalm* after how well Fulham did in the end this season, compared to us?

I just dont understand this Anti Zamora bol#ox. >:(
He works his nuts off for the team as the lone forward. :-*

Dont forget we have had to change tactics due to Cisse missing 7 out of 12 games he should have played! ::)
He is a goal or two away from showing everyone he is a very good forward! ;)

Much of it has already been said, but yeah, I really can't see how you can get on Zamora...he's doing what Hughes is asking of him. A few more goals would be nice, but like rory said he's never been a prolific goal scorer. I think he's done the job asked if him to this point, and has been an ideal relegation scrap transfer. His play against Arsenal was awesome, and we might stay up because of those points (and others obviously.)

We seem to have a player of the week who gets nominated for the target of fans ire. Last week

Mackie, this week Zamora. We are hanging by our finger nails and to me it would be nice to commend players for what they have done. Last week Kenny in goal, and the evergreen Derry who worked his
gunavem off that he didnt even realise we had ten men. The brilliant goal of Tarby, defenders working arse off, Ferdinand playing much better. Clearing out corners. Other stuff I have forgot?
These posts wont determine if we stay or go, but I prefer to the goat of the week. Still theres no disputing taste, but its better for my mind to accentuate the positive.

To the detractors, why not go the whole hog and boo him when we play Stoke? I guess we have you to thank for Barton's upturn in performance? Or maybe it is that he is just a decent player?

Bit over the top with the last comment.

His hold up play is excellent but if we are going to play with one striker we need someone who will score, like Cisse.

Cisse.? surely you meant, SWP.

The last game that Zamora did not start was ManUre away
How did we look as an attacking team that day, how many real chances did we create
We look a better team with him playing and every striker in the world misses more chances than they take (fact)

Agree. The fact that he has 2 or 3 defenders on him as the sole striker (when Cisse isn't playing) means his role is primarily as a hold player waiting to pass to players in a better position. Look at one of the incidents on the weekend when he found himself in space in the penalty box. His first instinct was to lay off to a team mate and it took him a few seconds to realise he was free. Were it not for a sliding intercept that could well off been a goal.

Yes indeed he did miss a couple of chances in the WBA game but even the great RVP misses goals.

He is clearly following instructions from Hughes and whilst we all would love him to be a profilic scorer, unfortunately he ain't.

I like Zamora, I'd rather have 5 of him on our books than Vine, Ageymang, Hulse, Bothroyd & even Campbell. Zamora plays to his strengths and that he hasn't had a partner up front is not his fault. He's held the ball up, created chances for others. Dragged defenders away from areas to create spaces. I said when he was at Brighton and that we were showing an interest, we should have bought him then. We would not have had to suffer so many years of mediocrity since Furlong moved on.

Not going to happen....

Winner against Chelsea is going to be an own goal from John Terry as Ferdinand comes up for a corner (taken by SWP) :D

I'm not having a go at his hold up play, that has been absolutely superb. He just hasn't been good enough in and around the box which is the most important part for a striker. Maybe he is slightly short of confidence with scoring, I don't know.

Against Spurs I personally didn't think he was very good and to me it didn't look like he was too interested. I know a lot of people in the live chat room were saying the same and were calling for him to be replaced by Cisse.

In my opinion he needs to be partnered with a goal scorer like Cisse.

Perhaps the most significant impact, though, has been that of Zamora. Far more suited to his demanding role than Bothroyd, the muscular Zamora’s ability to bring figures such as Mackie into play has proved vital.

No matter what anyone says I will still think that Helguson was better in that role before his injury.

I hope Zamora stays, and i hope Jay does as well. I know JB hasn't got a lot of friends on this forum(well i have not seen too many as of late) but if we stay up and our players decide to stay we will have a good squad for next year with good stand-in strikers, i still think we have yet to see the best of Jay and DJ.

Cheers,

Jay

I really hope DJ stays as I would like to see him get a run of games but Jay should be one of the first players out of the door in the summer.

Agreed. Even thought not a massive fan of Zamora's, there is no comparing of him with Bothroyd to be done whatsoever

Agreed and especially without Cisse.
That was why he was brought here(to partner Zamora)
Zamora has to do two men´s work now.
Shame on you you, Djibril Cisse.

Some strikers are brought in and their main task is to score goals and not really do much else. Others are rbiught in to hold up play, bring others into play and score the occasional goal. Yes Zamora has missed a few chances. But he also does a lot creating chances. Having him in the team and his skill in holding the ball up means that it doesn't come back to us so quickly and so often. Taking pressure of the midfield and defence whilst also creating more chances for us. Prolific no but an asset to the team. Yes.

Just also wanted to add that Tarrabt is also very good at holding the ball up. Which annoys me when he gets substituted towards the end of games. No one better at running the clock down than him.
