Samba Diakite has been handed the number two shirt vacated by Bradley Orr
I thought you couldn't do that but shows what I know.

Didn't think you could either but it must be ok if a player leaves during January. Think we wouldn't be allowed if the number 2 shirt was still being used and we swapped it round though.

We sold Orr so his number is free, no problem at all.
Anyway, when I saw the post subject, I thought it was a polite observation!

Gonna seem odd, a midfielder wearing No.2
Does anyone know if there has been any outfield player wearing No.1? I've got a feeling Ardiles did for Argentina but can't remember for certain (at work at the moment so not really able to look it up myself)

Just hope they don't decide to play Diakité at back.

Actually I just remembered you can. Last season Torres started at Liverpool with the number 9 shirt and then Carroll got it after the mad transfer deadline day switch around. What I was thinking of was European rules, Carroll had to wear the number 29 for Liverpool in the Europa League because his number 9 had already been used by Torres.

Ardiles played as number 1 in Argentina's Spain '82 squad. It was because the squad numbers were handed out alphabetically from Ardiles (no. 1) to Van Tuyne (22). However, Maradona retained the no. 10, presumably because of his ego.
I knew my Spain 82 book would become handy one day!

However, Maradona retained the no. 10, presumably because of his ego. I knew my Spain 82 book would become handy one day! That tournament was a tourney too early for Maradona. I was 13 at the time and was looking forward to seeing him play in Spain '82 but he had a poor World cup, culminating in his sending off against Brazil in the knockout stage. But Mexico '86 was a completely different story. Greatest performance by a player in a tournament that I have ever and will ever see. His 2nd goal against England in the quarters still remains, in my opinion, the greatest goal ever scored. Not that this has anything to with Diakité mind, but Maradona brings out some of the happiest memories I have of watching football. Privileged to have seen him play. Utter frickin genius.

Am I the only one that takes a lot of interest in kit numbers?? I always get annoyed when a player gets a number that seems wrong for that particular person, for example Zamora being number 52 seems wrong to me.
If you name a player currently playing either in the Prem or at a big European team I'm sure I could tell you their number.

Didnt he play rightback for Mali? No he played CM. Mali have three players named Diakite, one issue goalkeeper, one a RB and our Diakite was the CM.

In fairness whenever i watched him in the ANC he looked good but he needs a few games to settle in , what we dont have . He gets forward aswell and takes people on .

for example Zamora being number 52 seems wrong to me. Makes it more interesting when comparing the QPR squad to your local Chinese restaurant menu. Bobby Zamora would be Beef Satay, for example, while Diakite would be Spring Roll. Besides, isn't 52 the reversal of his Fulham number?

Yeah it is but it doesn't suit him, if that makes sense.
