Cook - We Didn't Give Them A Sniff
Posted on: Mon 12 Dec 2011
ON LOAN winger Lee Cook finally got a win in an Orient shirt as he helped the O's to three points against Exeter. He spoke to leytonorient.com after the game
Lee, a good result eventually but were you starting to worry that this might be another one of those days?
"No I didn't think so. At half-time the call was to be patient, keep playing the way we are and the goals will come, and that's exactly what happened. Even the gaffer said that on a normal day that could have been 5-0, and we felt so too. We didn't give them a sniff the whole game really, and that was important after last week."
What was the mood like after that cup defeat?
"It was a bit down, because last year the lads did really well [in the cup], so the atmosphere was really bad after the game on Saturday. We came in Monday training and it was still a little bit dull, but on the Tuesday we had a really good session and everyone left the training ground bubbling. We got called in on the Wednesday which was good, we practised more shape, and it's paid off today."
What changed on the Tuesday?
"The gaffer said 'next week we're going to be doing this', the 4-4-2, put it in a game situation, and the lads kicked on from the first whistle. He was happy with that, so we continued to practise that on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday."
That's by far the best performance since you've been here presumably?
"Without a doubt, and I'm hoping next week will be even better, we'll take this performance into Notts County and we wont be scared to go up there. They're top eight I think but we've got a good team here and the gaffer knows that, and he said that to us, so we'll go there next week and we won't be looking for anything else than a win."
There's some useful top-level experience there now with you and Kevin Lisbie in the side.
"He's a great striker. He's been about a bit - I'm not sure how old he is now - but he still moves like a young player, finishes like one and the same with Curo, he's 36 now I think. So a lot of experience up front, with Jon as well, but Kevin did brilliantly today, worked his heart out."
And what do you make of young George Porter? Could you see him playing at a higher level?
"Absolutely. He's young and he's got a lot to learn, he knows that, but he's got the attributes to be a good player. He's very quick, he's got that in abundance, and if he can get his head right and use that pace in the right areas he'll do well, like he did today with the penalty. That was perfect from him. It's a learning curve for him, he's a young boy and I've been there at that age, and hopefully I can help him out."
Notts County would be your last game of the loan spell - has it been a useful few weeks for you?
"Very much, very much. The training has been good which has been great for me, and over the three games I've felt that each week I've been getting fitter. I took a bit of a knock today in the second half but I'm hoping I can shrug it off for training on Tuesday and then get another good week in me, and fire on next Saturday. I think I'll be ok."
