Hawks 1 Pompey 2 by Neil Weld at Westleigh Park
Pompey got their pre-season campaign off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory against neighbours Havant & Waterlooville.
David Nugent and Michael Brown were the Blues scorers, netting either side of Mustafa Tiryaki’s goal.
But the Blue Square South side missed the opportunity to take the lead early in the second half when Sam Pearce’s penalty was saved by Liam O’Brien.
Steve Cotterill named a mix of youth and experience for his first game in charge of the Blues.
Nugent, Tommy Smith, Marc Wilson, Brown and Hayden Mullins were the senior figures included in the starting 11.
Pompey created some early openings with Matt Ritchie twice having efforts deflected narrowly over the crossbar.
But they made their pressure count on 14 minutes when NUGENT latched onto Marlon Pack’s header, shimmied past a couple of challenges and slid the ball into the net.
They should have had another soon after but Bobby Hopkinson somehow cleared the ball off the line after Smith had flicked Ritchie’s header towards goal.
The Hawks weren’t causing Pompey too many problems, although Steve Ramsey shot wide as the hosts mounted their first attack of note on 28 minutes.
But they should have been level soon after. Wes Fogden had a clear sight of goal after receiving the ball in the box but he took too long to line up his shot, allowing Wilson to get back and make a challenge.
Pompey went straight up the other end and created a chance of their own. Smith unselfishly picked out Nugent but his weak effort was easily dealt with by Hawks keeper Nathan Ashmore.
And the Hawks were level on 38 minutes when Tiryaki was left completely unmarked at the far post to convert Ian Selley’s fine cross from the right.
Half Time: Hawks 1 Pompey 1
Pompey made one change at the break with O’Brien taking over from Jon Stewart in goal.
The hosts – who made six substitutions at the interval – were given an immediate chance to take the lead when Marlon Pack tripped Stewart Douglas in the box and referee Andy Laver pointed to the spot.
b]Pearce stepped up to take the spot-kick but his effort was well saved by O’Brien down to the keeper’s right.[/b]
Instead it was Pompey who took the lead on 58 minutes thanks to plenty of perseverance by BROWN, who bundled his way into space and slid the ball home from a tight angle.
A raft of substitutions from both sides interrupted the flow of the game midway through the second half as the chances began to dry up.
Pompey were content to hold onto their one-goal lead as the game drifted towards its conclusion – a lead they never looked like relinquishing.
