Fans groups unite to slam MoS’s ‘worst sort of journalism’ in wake of Triesman entrapmentBy Pete Wilson17 May 2010 Football supporters’ groups have accused the Mail on Sunday of damaging England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup by printing extracts from a covertly recorded private conversation between Lord Triesman and a former aide, Melissa Jacobs. Triesman resigned on Sunday after remarks he had made to Jacobs were made public by the MoS. Triesman suggested in the conversation that Russia could help Spain to bribe referees at this summer’s World Cup, and then Spain would drop out of the race for 2018, thereby helping Russia, a key rival to England in the race to stage the tournament. Fans groups have now expressed “regret” at the resignation of Triesman, and criticised the potential damage to England’s World Cup bid caused by the Mail on Sunday. In a joint statement, Supporters Direct (SD) and the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) called upon all involved to “refocus their energies on protecting and promoting England’s World Cup bid.” Supporters Direct is the national organisation that promotes supporter ownership and involvement in the governance of professional team spectator sports including football. The Football Supporters’ Federation represents more than 170,000 fans of clubs and national teams at all levels throughout England and Wales. Both organisations have also called on the new sports minister, Hugh Robertson, to become involved to “ensure the strongest possible candidates are appointed to the FA’s two most important jobs”. Both SD and the FSF praised Lord Triesman’s role as a catalyst for a series of important reforms both at the FA and across the game. Malcolm Clarke of the FSF said: “The first priority now is to protect and promote the England World Cup 2018 bid. The Mail on Sunday has grievously endangered the bid with the worst sort of journalism. All involved at the Mail should hang their heads in shame. Many football supporters will think long and hard before buying the Daily Mail or The Mail on Sunday. “It is sad that David felt the need to resign over what he believed was a private conversation with a friend but the fact is that the FA has now lost its chief executive and chairman within a matter of weeks. However this is an opportunity for the FA to reassert its role as English football’s governing body. “The appointments of both the new chairman and chief executive must be conducted in accordance with the highest, most transparent standards. New appointments will need to command respect at all levels of the game from the grassroots to the professional ranks. The last thing we want to see is a weak appointee who meekly surrenders to any of football’s warring factions. “Our national game desperately needs strong and independent leadership.” Dave Boyle, chief executive of Supporters’ Direct, said: “The last time the FA was engulfed in this kind of scandal, we got the Burns review. We don’t need to have the review this time – we just need to see the Burns recommendations implemented in full. With the World Cup bid in process, action is needed to reassure the world that someone is actually in charge of our national game. “We all know the FA’s governance has been dysfunctional, so its very hard to be full of confidence about how these two critical appointments will be made, so we call on the new sports minister, Hugh Robertson to use his influence to ensure that the composition of the search committee commands confidence and the wider appointment process is open and fair. It goes without saying that we believe supporters should have a say in this process, along with the game’s other stakeholders” While the MoS story made global headlines, the way in which the paper reported the story has attracted fervent criticism from its own readers, with a huge majority of responses to the story on its own website being critical of what it had done. Many negative comments have been removed. It is understood that Ms Jacobs – who is in no way related or connected to a porn model of the same name, although this is understood to have caused confusion on some ‘Fleet Street’ picture desks these past two days – went to the MoS after being told that another newspaper was going to run a story about her, and she was advised to get there first. It appears the MoS has misjudged the public mood, which seems now to be strongly in favour of the 2018 bid. As one recent comment to its story said: “You [the MoS] are an absolute disgrace. This is pathetic news that you choose to peddle to sell papers. How much enjoyment will you spoil, for so many people with your underhand attempts to derail the World Cup bid?” . www.sportingintelligence.com/2010/05/17/fans%e2%80%99-groups-unite-to-slam-mos%e2%80%99s-%e2%80%9cworst-sort-of-journalism%e2%80%9d-in-wake-of-triesman-entrapment-170502/

Dont understand why Football fans would condemn the mail On Sunday.
Here was someone that was parachuted in to a completely inappropriate job by the now disgraced Labour administration, this individual has now cost us the chance of holding a World Cup Finals & earning billions of pounds for this now bankrupt nation in the process.
I dont blame The Mail On Sunday, I dont even blame Triesman, I blame The FA for letting Labour parachute in someone who was completely inappropriate for the role, another absolute farce delivered to you by The FA, beyond a joke / surreal / laughable.
P.S. Has Lilleshall opened yet ?
Absolute Joke.

I see what you are saying KLR, however if the Mail scratched the surface of a story then surely they should have investigated the allegations mentioned rather that settling for the easy target, now sadly we will never know if it were a conspiracy theory or if indeed the Spaniards and the Russians wanted to bribe match officials. and we probably wont get at world cup, again, and they did not pay for this latest bid, we the tax payer did.

More to come?Independent - FA braces for second batch of Triesman tapes
Personal attack on 'greedy, corrupt' figures could hit efforts to repair 2018 bid at Champions League final
By Ian Herbert, Deputy Football CorrespondentTuesday, 18 May 2010 Lord Triesman: the chairman of the Football Association was the victim of a process by which the ends always justify the means, however sleazy and underhand they may be The Football Association is braced for the publication of a highly personalised attack on those at the top level of the game considered by Lord Triesman to be "greedy, corrupt and ignorant," with the deposed chairman's former aide Melissa Jacobs understood to be in two minds about whether to share more revelations from her recorded conversation with him. The married Labour peer, with whom Ms Jacobs claims she was having an affair, is understood to have spoken at length to her about colleagues at the Football Association and at the top of the game in general and there are believed to be more anti-Russian comments from him, with suggestions of a Russian "mafia" at work at Roman Abramovich's Chelsea. The FA's hopes that it had killed the issue by so swiftly removing Triesman as both its own and the 2018 bid chairman on Sunday, were dashed yesterday evening when Fifa unexpectedly demanded a full written report on his comments that Russia was going to help Spain bribe referees at this summer's World Cup. There was an air of desperation when the FA took the unusual step of invoking England's pursuit of the World Cup this summer as part of its plea to move on. "The gossip and the nonsense doesn't matter – we are now approaching the business end of the World Cup, where we actually have to perform on the field and that's all that matters," said acting chief executive, Alex Horne. Fifa, which forbids the discussion of rival bids by other prospective host countries, could conceivably throw out England's bid having concluded its inquiries, though that appears highly unlikely. Related articles Fans protest as bid to host World Cup falls prey to the oldest trick in the book Terence Blacker: Entrapment is the name of the game Search the news archive for more stories The new 2018 bid chairman Geoff Thompson met yesterday with bid chief executive Andy Anson and chief of staff Simon Greenberg while bid board member Sebastian Coe spoke by telephone with Fifa president Sepp Blatter. But if Ms Jacobs decides to share more intimacies, it is possible that those remaining at the top level of the organisation may be tainted by their publication next Sunday, just 24 hours after Thompson's bid team attempts to salvage England's reputation by meeting Blatter and Spanish bid leader Angel Maria Villar Llona at Saturday's Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Internazionale in Madrid. Though friends of Ms Jacobs said yesterday that she was surprised to find that Triesman had been removed so quickly from his positions, there seems to be no residual sympathy for the man who employed her as an aide when he was a minister at the Department for Innovation, Skills and Training. An interview which would furnish the Mail on Sunday with a second part to last Sunday's story has not yet taken place and the 37-year-old is said to be "50:50" as to whether she will proceed. Friends suggested that Ms Jacob, who follows football and is an Arsenal supporter, has taken some satisfaction from knowing that an individual who was so negative about the game is no longer involved in the 2018 bid. But there is no denying that money was an objective: Ms Jacobs is believed to have earned £75,000 from Sunday's first tape-recorded revelations, in which Triesman's bribery allegations were made. Sources say that it was a desire to divert the focus from the sexual relationship she alleges to have had with the 66-year-old which led her to take a tape recorder into a one-hour meeting she had with him two weeks ago in an attempt to see the emphasis shift to football issues. The Mail on Sunday must weigh up whether further revelations risk causing it unpopularity if the 2018 bid is further damaged. The Supporters' Direct and Football Supporters' Federation said that the bid had been "grievously endangered" by the paper, which did not respond to The Independent's inquiries on the issue yesterday. The FA's damage limitation exercise continues in Zurich today where director of football services Jonathan Hall will attend a meeting of the International Football Association Board at which Blatter and general secretary Jérôme Valcke will be present. The prospect of further taped revelations raises the prospect of attacks both on the FA and Premier League personnel. Triesman enjoyed a less than harmonious relationship with some of fellow FA board members, including vice chairman Sir Dave Richards, and his relationship with the Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore had been a difficult one. Ms Jacobs is understood to have approached the media adviser Max Clifford two months ago after the News of the World informed her that it had been made aware of her relationship with Triesman and said it wanted to buy her story. Initially she said she did not want to cooperate and after an initial meeting with Clifford decided against selling her own story elsewhere to take control of the situation. But after further contact from the News of the World she decided to embark on what Triesman has since described as a "honeytrap" operation. Triesman has said that Ms Jacobs has "greatly exaggerated" the extent of their "friendship." www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/fa-braces-for-second-batch-of-triesman-tapes-1975640.html

Maybe he'd want to bring back Terry Venables? The Times/Ben Smith Lord Sugar interested in replacing Lord Triesman as FA chairmanLord Sugar says he would be interested in becoming chairman of the FA in the wake of Lord Triesman’s resignation. The former Tottenham Hotspur chairman and star of the television show The Apprentice, says he would be open to the possibility of discussing a role within the FA, which many believe lacks leadership and direction. Triesman was forced to step down from the governing body and end his involvement with England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup after being recorded making allegations that Spain and Russia were planning bribe referees at next month’s tournament in South Africa. David Sheepshanks, the former Ipswich Town chairman, and Roger Burden, the former chairman of the Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society, have been installed as joint acting chairmen of the FA. However, Sugar believes he could restore the FA’s reputation after a series of embarrassing setbacks. Sugar advised the last government on business as its enterprise champion. “I would certainly be interested. Not just in terms of the World Cup bid but in terms of reforming the whole FA,” he said. “A couple of people have emailed me to say they think I would be ideal for the role and that’s given me the seed of an idea. “I have had no contact from the FA but it is an interesting idea and everyone knows I have been a strong commentator on the state of English football. And it’s not as if I would be an outsider coming into the game. I do have something of a track record in football. Since the election I don’t have my government role any more so it could be a case of one door closing and another one opening.” www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/article7128673.ece

Mind you not only might this damage Englands chances but frankly speaking, Spain and Russia should already be disqualified to show unbias. The dork may have made the statement, but on what grounds? What whispers had he heard. No smoke without fire etc.

I personally think the MOS have acted totally out of order, and they could have cost the country millions if not billions of revenue all for the sake of a few extra sales.
Shame on them

A usual people are quick to shoot the messenger. Whether private or not the utterances of that clown (I mean Russia hadn't even qualified for SA2010 so how were they expected to bribe refs and I'm sure Spain didn't need anybody's help either) were totally inappropriate for a man in his position.
The guy was totally promoted into a position well above his station and has made a fool of himself, the English 2018 WC Bid and England itself - as well as insult 2 member federations of UEFA.
If he was foolish enough to make these utterances now - whether private or public - then it was almost a certainty that, further down the road, he would have some up with some real good stories to totally embarrass the nation.
Condemn the Lordship not the press.

Condemn the Lordship not the press. Agree 100% This parasite New Labour "Lord" was parachuted in to this job, it was just completely & utterly ridiculous story from start to finish even by The FA's standards, complete farce, even I picked up on the body language of the football people & they just werent comfortable around "Lord" Triesman, a really really creepy guy! People saying that fans are criticising The mail On Sunday is just another media smokescreen, just because that left wing sycophant Mark Perryman was interviewed by BBC news, it doesnt mean he represents the views of any football fans in this country, the only reason someone like that gets interviewed by The BBC is because he tows the party line & deflects the attention away from the real fu ck ups IE The FA & "Lord" Triesman ( still none the wiser as to who he actually is, or why he was in that particular job ?? ) Glad to see with this media speculation about "Sir" Alan Sugar, that The FA have learnt their lessons..............FFS! Absolutely laughable beyond words, this is The FA's fault yet again for letting Labour force this pathetic & disgraceful appointment upon them, why dont they adopt some common sense & actually give the job to someone that actually likes football for a change like Trevor Brooking or David Sheepshanks. Is that really too much to ask ??! Absolute bunch of Co cks the whole lot of them, absolute joke. P.S. Has Lilleshall opened yet ??

On the other hand and playing the devils advocate, is there fixing of officials in football? I mean cheating has become endemic in the World political economy, sports players continually try to get an edge, have you ever watched any games where the decisins were spurious, and some players look curiously strange. why not match officials.

Triesman was having a private meal with someone who he thought was a friend. She asked him in a joking way what is the latest gossip and he repeated some allegations that were going around.
He has been completely screwed over and entraped by Melissa Jacobs and the MoS. It is rotten journalism by MoS and morally reprehensible by Jacobs. The sole motivation was money and she drew out of him what she wanted. It beggars belief that recording a conversation without someone's knowledge and then selling it for profit is legal.
There is not a sole on this forum, country or world who has not criticised someone else in a private conversation or repeated some gossip they had heard. This was not an announcement or declaration on his part, it was a sordid, black-hearted piece of deceit from a trusted friend. It makes no difference what his politics are and whatever party he represents. At least one Newspaper turned the story down as too exploitative; an act of rare mortal fortitude in a profession so sadly lacking this trait. If only the MoS had shown the same sense of fair play.

Current Wikipedia entry for the MoS reads like this lol
The Mail on Sunday is a British conservative newspaper, currently published in a tabloid format. First published in 1982 by Lord Northcliffe, it is Britain's second biggest-selling Sunday newspaper after The News of the World.[2] Its sister paper, the Daily Mail was launched in 1896. It is a National Socialist newspaper which supported Oswald Mosley and his blackshirted facists and was recently responsibly for betraying England's chances of holding the 2018 FIFA World Cup. All Daily Mail staff are now considered enemy collaborators and TRAITORS against the British Crown and Nation.

BBC Gary Lineker quits Mail on Sunday over Triesman story Gary Lineker is to stop writing articles for the Mail on Sunday after it published a story he says damaged England's 2018 World Cup bid. The paper ran an article which alleged that Lord Triesman, then chairman of the 2018 bid team, had suggested Spain could drop its bid if rival bidder Russia helped bribe referees at this summer's World Cup. Lord Triesman has since resigned from his position, as well as from his post as chairman of the Football Association. Lineker, the former England captain and Match of the Day presenter, told Eddie Mair on Radio 4's PM that he could not continue as a columnist for a paper which had "clearly damaged" England's bid. newsvote.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8690639.stm

If the conspiracy thoery outlined here: www.twohundredpercent.net/?cat=53is to be believed the MoS may have been doing the bidding of some of their premier league friends. It was interesting to note that their journalist Charles Sale was today stating that sources are advising him that the World Cup bid will now function better without Lord T. If the premier league now bung cash in, which they have been loathe to whilst Triesman was in place it may give credence to the conspiracy.
