Former England international and Aston Villa, QPR and Derby County manager John Gregory is rumoured to be a leading candidate to take over as coach at Beitar Jerusalem .
Gregory has spent the past six months coaching Israeli minnows Maccabi Ahi Nazareth in an attempt to haul them away from relegation. Although he failed to keep Ahi Nazareth in Israel's top flight, they put up an admirable fight under Gregory's leadership.
Ahi Nazareth's improvement under Gregory appears not to have gone unnoticed. With his contract coming to an end, one of Israel's major sides, Beitar Jerusalem are rumoured to be lining up the Englishman as their new manager, according to Israeli website 'One'.
Beitar's current manager and former player David Amsalem is viewed as a stop-gap option, especially as his side bring a disappointing season to a close. Beitar won the Israeli cup last season and were league champions in both of the previous two campaigns and will likely look for a new coach to challenge once more.
'One' reports that neither Gregory nor Beitar chairman Itzik Kornfein would confirm the possibility of the appointment, but neither would they deny the rumors. 'One' reports that Gregory is being considered alongside Beitar playing legend Uri Malmilian.
In four years as Aston Villa coach, Gregory led the Midlands club to sixth place in the Premier League and an FA Cup final appearance.
During his managerial career in England, Gregory has also managed at Portsmouth, Plymouth Argyle , Wycombe Wanderers and Derby County . Most recently he spent a little over a year as manager of QPR, steering them to Championship safety in the 2006/7 season.
