GROUNDSMEN OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED
Posted on: 22.04.2010
As the end of the current campaign nears completion, award season is just around the corner, however accolades are not just restricted to those on the pitch. And it's those behind it who have been honoured by The Playing Surfaces Groundsman of the Year Awards.
The 2009/10 winners where announced at noon on Thursday and in the week when they claimed the Coca-Cola Championship title, Groundsmen Mick Curran and Andrew Tulley ensured there would be another trophy heading to St James Park.
Their efforts looking after Newcastle United's pitch saw them pick up the Championship award ahead of Bristol City's Craig Richardson and Tony Bell from Middlesbrough, who were both highly commended.
In League 1 Southampton's Andy Gray was the divisional winner, having been highly commended last season in the Championship. Gary Kemp (Norwich City) and Lee Williams (Oldham Athletic) were highly commended for their attention to the playing surfaces at Carrow Road and Boundary Park respectively.
Having been promoted last season Burton Albion are enjoying their first season as members of The Football League and anyone who has visited the Pirelli Stadium this year will appreciate the efforts of the ground staff there. Simon Marshall has provided Manager Paul Peschisolido with an excellent surface to play on and that saw him named as the League 2 Groundsman of the Year.
Cheltenham Town's Terry Roberts and Mark Reeve from Lincoln City where also highly commended.
