UNITED KINGDOM: LIVERPOOL WINS ENGLISH FIRST DIVISION FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR RECORD NINTH TIME.
Story
Liverpool won the English First Division football championship for a record ninth time by beating Wolverhampton Wanderors 3-1 on Tuesday (4 May) with all their goals coming in the last 15 minutes.
A goal by Steve Kindon after 12 minutes put Wolves ahead and they held the margin until England international striker, Kevin Keegan, shot the equaliser in the 76th minute.
The winning goal came from keegan's partner in attack, Welsh international, John Toshack, after 85 minutes and Ray Kennedy added the final goal with just one minute remaining.
The triumph gave Liverpool the title by one point from Queen's Park Rangers who had already finished their schedule and needed a Liverpool loss or high - scoring draw to take the championship themselves.
Wolverhampton's loss sent them down into the second Division with Burnley and Sheffield United.

BLAKEY: "Wolves had to win for survival, Liverpool needing just a low scoring draw for the championship. In the 13th minute, it was Wolves who took the lead. Steve Kindon scored and it was one-nil for Wolves, a goal that might have saved them, a goal that might have won the championship for Queen's Park Rangers. Liverpool came close to equalising five minutes later from a corner. The ball reached Kennedy outside the penalty area. After fifteen minutes, there was a chance of the kind that brought so many goal to Liverpool this season but the shot was blocked. Wolves were not prepared to sit on their one goal lead. But at half time it was still one-nil to Wolves. With less than a quarter of a hour to go, the experience and pressure of Liverpool finally paid off. Keegan had the ball and scored...one-all...enough to give Liverpool championship and more than enough to bring crowds on to the pitch. And then with only four minutes to go, Liverpool made certain of the title. John Toshack did it for them. Two-one and the championship was Liverpool's. But there was more to come from Liverpool in the shape of Kennedy. And so, Liverpool took the championship in style.
