Fearful of a low attendance, Second Division Blackpool agreed a fixed fee of £250 as their share of the gate receipts for their F.A. Cup tie against at First Division Sheffield United. The Seasiders still had the audacity to win the match.

George Swinden, Arsenal goalkeeper, joined Peterborough United as player-manager. Made his League debut with Bradford City during the 1934-35 season and joined the Gunners during the following one. At Highbury he won Championship medals in 1938 and 1948 and Cup medals in 1950 and 1952; the former as a winner. In all he appeared in 298 League matches. From Peterborough he returned to Arsenal as manager in 1958 and remained in the job for four years. After further spells as manager of Norwich City and then Cardiff City he left the game for good in April 1964.

Tottenham Hotspur achieved their record victory when they beat Crewe Alexandra 13-2 in a F.A. Cup Fourth Round replay at White Hart Lane. The previous Saturday Crewe had held Spurs 2-2. Allen scored five, Smith four, Jones three and Harmer one. Coleman and Llewellyn found the net for Crewe.

After a long meeting in Manchester between the Football League and the Professional Footballers Association agreement was reached in principal on the new form of player's contracts. One of the main differences was that clubs could offer a player terms which covered a period of more than one year.
