Huddersfield Examiner Looks backHuddersfield Town nostalgia: Ian Greaves’ men in the clear as first QPR, then Cardiff beatenJan 23 2010 by Dougie Thomson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
TOWN moved clear at the top of Division II with a stylish home win over QPR, then underlined their credentials for promotion to the top flight by seeing off Welsh marauders Cardiff.
The back-to-back wins left Ian Greaves’ side two points in front of nearest rivals Blackburn with a game in hand.
Both games were rearranged following postponements because of a frozen pitch at Leeds Road, and Rangers had Rodney Marsh available for the Tuesday-night clash.
He would have missed the original date through suspension, but was given little chance to impress in any case as Town took a firm grip in front of a 21,432 crowd.
Instead Frank Worthington was the star of the show, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win.
“Frank flattened the Londoners with a strike in each half,” reported the Examiner’s Longfellow (Alan Driscoll).
“But the keynote of the entire operation was organisation. Town played with tremendous assurance and understanding. And as an attacking force, I have rarely seen them move better.
“When the going is smooth and firm, Town are capable of turning on really scintillating football. In this mood, they are capable of beating anybody.
“Attacking moves purred along like clockwork and there was superb backing up and running off the ball. The longer the game went on, the greater became Town’s superiority.”
With Trevor Cherry, Jimmy McGill and Jimmy Nicholson forming a highly effective midfield triangle, the foundation was laid for Worthington to produce some of his best work of the season so far.
The attack leader grabbed his first goal with a 20th-minute header from Nicholson’s free-kick, and the second came four minutes after the restart.
Jimmy Lawson won possession from a throw in and caught out the QPR defence with a deft cross.
Nicholson could have shot, but instead left it to Worthington, who trapped the ball and calmly shot home from 15 yards to take his season’s haul to 14.
Northern Ireland ace Nicholson did find the net against Cardiff, with his seventh-minute strike sealing a 1-0 win in front of 21,788.
The contest had been fixed up at short notice after both sides were dumped from the FA Cup by Fourth Division foes, Aldershot beating Town and York seeing off Cardiff.
Ninian Park boss Jimmy Scoular, the former Bradford Park Avenue player-manager, was none too happy at having to come North on the orders of the Football League.
And his mood wouldn’t have been improved after a defeat sealed when Nicholson lashed home a free-kick.
Town bossed the first half, but Cardiff, with ex-Town man Brian Clark and youngster John Toshack forming a dangerous partnership, hit back after the break, when it took a sterling defensive effort to deny them an equaliser
