The BBC broadcast their first running commentary of a Football League match when Arsenal played Sheffield United at Highbury. George Allison, who became Arsenal manager after the death of Herbert Chapman, provided the commentary. The historic match ended 1-1 with Charlie Buchan scoring for the Gunners and Billy Gillespie for the Blades.

Death of W. Williams, former West Bromwich Albion and England full-back, at the age of 53. He joined Albion in 1894 and played for England six times between 1897 and 1899.

Barnsley's Frank Bokes scored from a throw-in against Manchester United at Oakwell in the Fourth Round of the F.A. Cup. After taking the throw he charged through the United defence causing such confusion that their 'keeper Breen touched the ball into the net.

Fulham beat Swansea Town 8-1 in Division Two and inflicted the Welsh club's record defeat in the process. Rooke(4), Finch(2), Hammond and O'Callaghan scored for Fulham while Millington netted Swansea's only reply.

Johnny Hartburn {QPR 1947/48 blockhead} of Leyton Orient scored three goals in three minutes against Shrewsbury Town in his club's 5-0 win in Division Three South.

Morocco make it to the 1962 World Cup Finals on the toss of a coin. They had forced a playoff with Tunisia and after this had ended in a 1-1 draw and no penalty shoot-outs the toss of a coin was the method chosen to determine the winner.

Aston Villa sold their Irish international left-winger Peter McParland to Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of £30,000. He joined Villa in 1952 and played in over 300 matches scoring in excess of 100 goals (293 and 98 in the League). He also scored both goals in Villa's 2-1 Cup Final win over Manchester United in 1957. He only remained at Molineux for about a year before moving to Plymouth Argyle and left League football in 1964 when he joined Worcester City. In all he played 369 League matches and scored 123 goals. Between 1954 and 1962 he played 33 internationals for Ireland scoring 10 goals and, in November 1960, he played for the Football League against the Italian League in Milan.
