Former general manager passes away
Charlton have been saddened to learn of the death of former Addicks general manager Arnie Warren on Friday.
Warren worked alongside ex-managers Lennie Lawrence and Alan Curbishley and Steve Gritt in the 1980s and early 1990s.
"It's sad news," said Gritt. "He worked very closely with Alan and I; whenever we wanted a player, we would go to Arnie and he would deal with it.
"He helped Lennie as well, and I think he was involved in the process when Alan and I were given the job."
Warren, previously chief scout at Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers, was appointed Charlton chief scout in November 1984 in succession to Les Gore, who remained at the club to supervise the development of schoolboys and young players. He was appointed Charlton's general manager - still acting as chief scout - in April 1987 following the departure of chief executive Tony Shaw.
And Warren was put in charge of all off-field activities in July 1991 following the appointments of Curbishley and Gritt as joint first-team managers.
He had a heart by-pass operation in August 1991, and after his Charlton days, he was scouting for Middlesbrough and, later, Luton Town.
Warren later became a monitor for the Premier League, a role which involved him travelling around and inspecting clubs' facilities.
Gritt added: "He used to come to the training ground quite a lot and we always used to have a good chat.
"Arnie liked a moan and always used to let me know about certain things we weren't quite getting right, but it was always to make things for the better."
Warren's name will be included in the minute-long period of applause which marks the passing of Addicks players, officials and fans over the past 12 months, which will now take place at Charlton's League One fixture with Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, January 30th (3pm).
The annual tribute was due to take place last Saturday ahead of the Addicks' game with Hartlepool United at The Valley, but the match was postponed due to the adverse weather conditions in SE7.
Instead, the Charlton community will come together as one for the visit of Rovers - with the 60-second tribute paying homage to those with Addicks connections who have lost their lives in 2009.
In addition to the applause, all the names of those who have died will appear on the big screen shortly before kick-off.
All of the names that appeared in the Deaths section of Personals in the Valley Review in 2009, plus anyone who sent in details for the Hartlepool game, have been automatically added to the list for the applause ahead of the Rovers clash.
Any remaining fans who want details of Addicks supporters who have passed away during the past year included in the memorial should email gill.neville@cafc.co.uk or call 020-8333 4000.
Alternatively, details can be faxed to 020-8850 7867 or posted c/o The Valley, with the closing date for submissions, due to the technical requirements of compiling the list for the big screen, the close of business on Tuesday, January 26th.
