- Daily Mail/Simon Jones Wigan celebrate after £300k win in police case
Wigan have won their court battle over a £300,000 policing bill.
Premier League clubs could have been facing significant rises in the cost of policing had they failed but the Court of Appeal in London upheld the club's complaint that Greater Manchester Police overcharged for covering match days at the JJB Stadium.
Appeal judges ruled by a 2-1 majority that the club, who have spent more than £500,000 on the case, had been charged for services which they had not requested.
The row broke out following an increase in charges for policing in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.
As a result of a High Court ruling last year, Wigan became entitled to the return of about £27,000, although they claimed nearly £300,000. Wigan used to be charged for services inside the stadium but then police demanded payment for the area surrounding the stadium.
The club were charged £226,184 in 2003-04 and £283,082 for 2004-05, compared with £61,058 in 2002-03.
