Bump another year January 11, 1997: 23 Years Ago John Spencer Hattrick vs Barnsley QPR 3 Barnsley 1 QPR Team that day: Roberts| Brevitt Ready McDonald Graham Brazier Murray Peacock Sinclair Hately Spencer Subs: Dichio, Maddix, Impey MATCH REPORT Sunday Mirror, Jan 12, 1997 by JOHN GUBBA - Mirror-Spencer leaves Danny in a daze QPR 3 Barnsley 1 Honest boss Danny Wilson gallantly took defeat on the chin and admitted: "I've no qualms about losing - that was a cracking game." Wilson's inspirational skipper Neil Redfearn broke the ice with a superb opener. But Barnsley were undone by a magnificent hat-trick from super Scot John Spencer that left Wilson lamenting: "They're the best team we've played this season." Wilson went on: "We matched them in the first half, but their equaliser just before half-time gave them a big lift. "I've no complaints with the efforts of my players although we were possibly a bit too cavalier at times." Wilson was more concerned with the injury to Steve Davis, who was stretchered off with a suspected broken leg 15 minutes from the end. Davis was caught accidentally in a challenge by Rangers' match- winner Spencer, who confessed: "That was my first-ever hat-trick, but all I could think about at the end was the injured player. "I went straight to the Barnsley dressing room to ask how he was." It was an unlucky end for Barnsley, who had looked a good bet to avenge their 3-1 defeat at Oakwell last September when they drew first blood in the 38th minute. Redfearn curled home a sweet dead ball after Jovo Bosancic won a controversial free-kick and then persuaded referee Carl Finch to move the defensive wall back. Barnsley looked like a side sitting in the top two of the First Division. But a classic Rangers move right on half-time took the wind out of their sails. Mirror

And 13 years ago: Kevin Gallen left QPR, initially joining Plymouth on six months loan. Many found the QPR statement on the Official site to be more than just a trifle cursory - given that it concerned someone with such a long history as Kevin Gallen. [/b]
Thursday, January 11, 2007 QPR Captain Kevin Gallen Joins Ian Holloway's Plymouth On Loan for Rest of Season
QPR Official Site FRIENDS REUNITED Club Captain Kevin Gallen has joined Plymouth Argyle on loan until the end of the current Coca Cola Championship campaign. The 31 year-old joins forces with former R's boss Ian Holloway at Home Park. Gallen has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring just four goals. A former product of the QPR youth system, Gallen spent eight years at Loftus Road before leaving the club in 2000 to join Huddersfield Town on a free transfer. He then joined Barnsley a year later, but returned to the R's in November 2001 and marked his second debut with a goal against Swindon. Earlier this season, Gallen clocked up his 400th appearance for the club. QPR
PLYMOUTH OFFICIAL SITE - MILES PER GALLEN Kevin-Gallen IT was Kevin Gallen's versatility that persuaded Ian Holloway to bring his former Queens Park Rangers captain to HomePark. Gallen, 31, is linking up again with Holloway on loan from Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season. The former England Under-21 striker has scored more than 100 league goals in a 400-plus games, 14-year, career. Apart from brief spells at Huddersfield and Barnsley, Gallen's entire career has been spent at home-town club Rangers. "Kevin Gallen is one of the best players I have ever worked with and I've got him from now until the end of the season. "He has played right-wing, left-wing, centre-midfield; he was my captain and hardly ever missed a game when I was at QPR. "We're in the market for some more strikers and we've lost Wottsy from centre-midfield. "He's somebody I know, somebody I trust, and I know he can put the ball in the net as well. "I thought he covered a lot of options for us while I try to buy the other type of striket that I need - a big, strong fellow who can head things." Gallen signed for the Rs on his 17th birthday after scoring a remarkable 153 goals in 110 appearances for the Rangers' youth team, breaking Jimmy Greaves' long-standing record at that level. After a productive partnership with Les Ferdinand, he suffered a serious knee injury after crashing into a goalpost at Portsmouth which blighted his progress and it was not until he returned to Loftus Road after short stints at Huddersfield and Barnsley that he really blossomed. Under Holloway's management, and having been awarded the Rangers' captaincy, he scored another 55 goals in the last five seasons as the Rs returned to the Championship. Argyle fans will not need much reminding of Gallen's ability. It was the Rangers' skipper's two goals that inspired the Rs to a 3-0 victory over the Pilgrims in November 2003, taking Hollway's then side to the top of League Two, above his current charges. His tally of 97 goals for QPR, including four from 19 games this season, makes him the sixth highest scorer in the club's history. Kevin Gallen

Mike Sheron Turns 47Born January 11, 1972 A symptom of how Chris Wright (and Houston/Rioch got us into such financial trouble - and why we are where we are) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_SheronAnd...Flashback: On July 1st, 1997, after oubidding Birmingham, QPR's Stuart Houston paid a record fee of some 2.7 million pounds for Stoke's forward, Mike Sheron. Sheron was QPR's last big signing before they went into financial free fall. Joining up with John Spencer and Trevor Sinclair (and a recovering Kevin Gallen), the "on paper" unbeatable forward line, looked a good for promotion. Unfortunately not! Some 18 months later, after 56 league games and 13 goals, Gerry Francis sold him to Barnsley for 1 million pounds plus (in part to cut down on QPR wages). QPR Official Site - Jan 26, 1999 SHERON JOINS BARNSLEY - QUEENS PARK RANGERS confirmed this afternoon that Mike Sheron has joined Barnsley for a fee around 1.5m. The 27-year-old striker joined Rangers in July 1997 from Stoke City. More details to follow. QPR Official Site - FRANCIS ON SHERON SALE - MIKE SHERON has joined Barnsley in a 1.5 million transfer deal. R's director of football Gerry Francis says:"Mike has been sold for financial reasons. But I knew about the financial situation when I rejoined the club. So the transfer was not unexpected. At the end of the day, we have to safeguard the future of QPR in the long term.". QPR Official Site - CHAIRMAN ON SHERON TRANSFER - RANGERS chairman Chris Wright has revealed the details behind Mike Sheron's 1.5 million transfer to Barnsley. - Mr Wright said:" Obviously Im disappointed to lose a player of Mikes ability. But unfortunately he was on a very, very high salary. We paid a Premier League transfer fee to buy him and we gave him Premier League wages to come to the club. - "So the wage structure that the player was on meant we were prepared to let him move on elsewhere. With the salary that we were paying Mike Sheron, we should be able to afford to bring up to four other good players into the club and still have change left over." The Mirror Football: Sheri pays high price.(Sport) The Mirror (London, England); January 28, 1999 ; 57 words... MIKE SHERON was forced out of QPR because he was earning enough to pay four players, chairman Chris Wright has claimed. Sheron, 27, was on..." STEW FOR STOKE.(Sport) The Mirror (London, England); June 21, 1997 ; 33 words... Stoke City are trying to sign veteran Sunderland striker Paul Stewart to clear the way for the sale of pounds 2.5million-rated Mike Sheron, who is already the subject of big-money offers from Birmingham and QPR. SHER PERSISTENCE.(Sport) The Mirror (London, England); May 29, 1997 ; 22 words... QPR manager Stuart Houston is making a third swoop for Stoke City striker Mike Sheron. He hopes to succeed this time with a pounds 2.7million bid. Sheron qprreport.blogspot.com/2009/01/flashback-one-decade-ago-qprs-most.html
