Sanjiv Saran Mehra With football's profile increasing constantly in India, many corporate houses are coming forward, even though sporadically, to help the cause of the sport here. However, one business house in Mumbai has been doing some fantastic work over the years at various levels of football.
Goal.com caught up with Mr.Sanjiv Saran, Founding CEO of Saran Presents Pvt Ltd, under which operates the sports marketing brand Saran Sports.
Telling us about the company, Mr.Saran said, "We are a sports marketing and management company, and are organizing various sporting activities at different levels, such as shools, NGOs, corporates etc. However, we are consciously focussing on football, as we feel it has great potential in India."
In fact, Mr.Saran and his colleagues are advisors to the Mumbai Schools Sports Association, which is one of the oldest such associations in the world, having been formed a staggering 17 years ago. Over 15,000 students play in tournaments organized by the association, which puts into perspective how important these initiatives really are.
Speaking about one very interesting tournament organized in the city, Mr.Saran explained, "Along with organizing inter-school tournaments, one very interestsing tournament we had helped to organize was the South Mumbai Junior Soccer Challenger.
"It was the only event where you had kids from the municipality and NGOs form their teams and compete alongside children from more privileged schools. It was an initiative by Mr.Milind Deora, in association with Queens Park Rangers of England."It was the first time many of those kids were playing with proper football boots and shorts and t-shirts, so it was a great experience of them, and they surprised many with their performances, as they won in one of the categories as well."
The CEO also added that the journey for some of those kids didn't end there. As after the tournament, QPR shortlisted 30 talented young boys for a camp, at which coaches from QPR came down to help them improve and learn more about the game. Two of these 30 boys were selected, and will now head to England in August to train at the club for six weeks.Coming up to the senior level, Saran Sports are also promoters in the Mumbai Football League, and have been coming up with some very interesting ideas to draw in the fans for local matches featuring clubs like Mahindra United, Mumbai FC, Air India, and ONGC.
Speaking about the same, he elaborated, "We are promoters, but our job doesn't end there. We also keep on trying to come up with ideas and give advice on how to run the tournament better, and make it more fan-friendly.
"For example, in the MFL, we had this 'Football ka Diwana' card, which we handed out to fans, and the ones who came back for more matches and hence had more stamps on the card, were given free merchandise at the end of the tournament."
In addition to the above, Saran Sports also organize corporate 5-a-side tournaments over the weekends, which have been running successfully since 1997, when 24 teams first took part. The number of companies taking part has increased exponentially since, as 82 teams lock horns these days.
Mr.Saran added, "Also, we helped organize a School Contact Programme for Pune FC when they were formed a few years back, through which we reached about 90,000 children, and distributed brochures about the team and the club, as well as some merchandise through a few contests."
Lastly, speaking about Indian football, Mr.Saran felt that two areas needed to improve drastically for the game to move forward.
"The infrastructure, as well as the administration of the sport needs to improve. By improvement in administration, I mean that all associations, including all at the state level, need to be professionalized.
"At the end of it all, the game needs to be made more friendly for everyone concerned, including the fans and sponsors, so that we can move forward", he signed off.
Hopefully, many other companies will follow their example and come forward to help propel Indian football to the heights it deserves to reach.
