QPR Official Site - Rs Sign Villa Acs
- Queens Park Rangers Football Club is delighted to confirm the signing of Aston Villa wide-man Wayne Routledge.
The 23 year-old midfielder has signed a three-and-a-half year deal in W12, after the Hoops agreed an undisclosed fee with the Midlands outfit for his services.
Routledge, who has been capped at England Under-21 level, has just returned from a successful loan spell at fellow Championship side Cardiff City.
He had previously enjoyed productive spells with Crystal Palace - with whom he secured promotion to the top-flight - and Premier League trio Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth and more recently, Fulham.
Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Routledge expressed his delight at sealing a move to Loftus Road, commenting: "I'm thrilled to be here.
"QPR are a Club with huge ambitions and as soon as they showed their interest in me, I was determined to speak to them.
"The Manager has a great vision about where he wants to take the Club and he sees me playing a big part in that. It's nice coming back to London, but the geography didn't play a big part in my decision - the reason I am here is because the Manager showed an unbelievable desire to get me to QPR and I am delighted to have sealed the move."
R's boss Paulo Sousa believes the arrival of Routledge represents a significant coup for the Club.
"I am delighted we've been able to bring Wayne to QPR," he said.
"There were a number of Clubs interested in signing him, but we've got our man and I couldn't be happier.
"He is a young, exciting talent, who is very capable at this level. He's quick, can score and create goals, and will add to the already healthy competition we have in the wide areas."
Sousa added: "He is a player we can count on for our long term project. His versatility will allow us to play with other dynamics.
"I love to see my wingers attack their full-backs and Wayne fits perfectly into that mould."
Routledge, who will wear the number 7 shirt, is set to be unveiled prior to Saturday's FA Cup tie against Burnley.

Coventry City's Borrowdale in £500,000 move to QPRJan 5 2009 By Andy Turner
IT HAS to go down as one of the most baffling transfers in recent memory - Gary Borrowdale to Queens Park Rangers for what is believed to be £500,000.
IT HAS to go down as one of the most baffling transfers in recent memory - Gary Borrowdale to QPR for what is believed to be £500,000.
What’s so strange about that, I hear you ask? Well, given the fact that the Coventry City misfit has not yet kicked a ball for the Hoops despite having been there on loan for a month, his move to Loftus Road seems bizarre to say the least.
Surplus to requirement under Chris Coleman, the Sky Blues clearly snapped billionaire owners Flavio Briatore, Bernie Ecclestone, and Lakshmi Mittal’s hands off when off when they offered to reimburse the majority of the £650,000 they shelled out for the former Crystal Palace left-back who managed just 26 appearances for City.
That is no doubt small change for the second richest club in England, and a great bit of business from Coventry, but it remains a mystery why the club would buy a player, and give him a three and a half year deal, when he has been with them for a month and not even been used as a substitute.
Word has it that manager Paulo Souza has even played people out of position rather than play Borrowdale who, unfortunately, is not expected to feature in Saturday’s match against his former club.
It is not even as if he has been out injured, leaving the only conclusion that his early career reputation when he was close to an England under-21 call goes before him. He can’t have been pulling up any trees in training because he would no doubt have been used by now.
Brought to Coventry by Iain Dowie, it is almost as if Rangers are still working from his shopping list, given that they have just taken another of Dowie’s former players, Wayne Routledge, and are rumoured, and I stress only rumoured, to be interested in Jay Tabb who was a big favourite of the former manager.
But hats off to Coventry if they have managed to get virtually their money back on the player who, like many acquisitions in recent years, promised so much and delivered so little.

Dave McIntyre - BBC606 - The Borrowdale problem
Rangers’ signing of Gary Borrowdale could turn out to be an expensive mistake.
Borrowdale has not made a single appearance since joining on an initial loan deal and is not rated by Paulo Sousa, who has chosen Damien Delaney and even an out-of-position Matt Connolly ahead of him at left-back.
The problem is that the deal to sign Borrowdale from Coventry for around £700,000 was agreed before Sousa’s appointment. As things stand, he is a QPR player.
That leaves the club with a full-back who is struggling to get a look in and Borrowdale facing the prospect of his Rangers career being halted before it’s even started – a far from ideal situation for both parties.
Heidar Helguson on the other hand has proved to be a useful addition and barring no late hitches, his permanent move from Bolton will go through.
Helguson gives Rangers something extra up front and their midfield would really be strengthened if they can finally pull off the signings of Ben Watson and Wayne Routledge. Both players have been targets for some time.
Watson was wanted by Iain Dowie and Rangers also tried to sign Routledge before he moved to Aston Villa, where he has failed to make an impact.
Routledge has been in good form for Cardiff and is scheduled to stay on loan there until 20 January.
If he ends up at Loftus Road it will be interesting to see what the fans make of him.
Routledge has never really been my cup of tea but I reckon he’d go down a storm.
He’s a very exciting winger at Championship level and would have people on the edge of their seats.
Routledge is already hugely popular at Cardiff, who want to keep him.
My concern about Routledge would be the same as it has been with several others who have been brought to Rangers. He’s yet another who wouldn’t be cheap but has little chance of developing into a Premier League player should the club get there.
It’s why I strongly disagree with the theory that this QPR regime hasn’t spent a lot of money.
Most of their signings have improved the squad but I would argue only Akos Buzsaky could cut it at a higher level, although Connolly perhaps could in the future.
For what they have signed, Rangers have shown little restraint in the transfer market despite the soundbites about not overspending.
We’ll soon know how far they are willing to push the boat out for Watson, who is no Buzsaky but would certainly do a good job for Rangers in his absence.
Watson had a brief spell in the top flight as a teenager and many believe he deserves another crack.
A number of Premier League clubs have watched him very closely for a long time but have decided not to take the plunge.
If that changes in January, it will obviously be tough for Rangers to get him even if they can agree a deal with Palace.
The games over Christmas definitely highlighted the areas that need to be improved and Sousa’s changes didn’t go down well with some.
I like what Sousa’s trying to do with Rangers but it is his – and the club’s - good fortune that Flavio Briatore was not at the Watford match.
The tide turns very, very quickly against a QPR manager who fails to please Briatore and his guests at a home game.
For now though, Sousa is still enjoying a honeymoon period and should keep Rangers in the play-off race with a decent signing or two. BBC606
