CARDIFF City are understood to be lining up a move for Republic of Ireland midfielder Steven Reid.
The 28-year-old Blackburn Rovers star could be the first addition during next month’s transfer window as Bluebirds boss Dave Jones seeks to bolster his promotion-chasing squad.
Reid came to prominence at Millwall where he gained a reputation for strong, driving runs and tremendous long-range shooting and won his first cap for Ireland while at the Den.
He moved to Blackburn for £1.85m in July 2003 and has made over 100 appearances for Rovers in an injury-hit spell at Ewood Park.
Reid – who has won 22 caps for his country and was a member of the Republic’s 2002 World Cup squad – can play either in central midfield or out wide, but he has found opportunities increasingly limited at Blackburn and went on loan to City’s Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers in November.
But Reid returned to Blackburn after only a couple of appearances and is now expected to agree a loan spell at Cardiff after featuring in Rovers’ third-round FA Cup tie against Aston Villa on Saturday.
City boss Jones has identified midfield as a department which needs strengthening with Stephen McPhail sidelined by injury and illness until February and Riccy Scimeca having announced his retirement earlier this month.
Jones would like to bring in two midfielders and a striker to compete with Jay Bothroyd during the January transfer window, while also adding to his defensive options.
