Former England football captain Jimmy Armfield has been honoured with a CBE for his community work in Lancashire.
Jimmy Armfield, the former England captain, is made a CBE for his community work in Lancashire.
Mr Armfield, 74, made a club record of 627 appearances for Blackpool as well as winning 43 England caps - including 15 as captain - between 1959 and 1966.
He went on to have a short but successful career as a manager, taking Leeds United to the European Cup Final in 1975, before becoming a journalist and BBC commentator.
It was announced this year that Mr Armfield would finally receive a World Cup winner's medal for his part in England's 1966 triumph over West Germany, in which he was a reserve.
As disclosed yesterday by The Daily Telegraph, Ian McGeechan, the four-times British and Irish Lions coach receives a knighthood. He is the highest honoured sportsman in this year’s list.
Beth Tweddle, Britain’s most successful gymnast becomes an MBE. Jason Roberts, a striker at Blackburn Rovers, received the same honour on the list from his native Grenada.
The recently-crowned Formula One driver Jenson Button also becomes an MBE. In the coming season, Mr Button is moving to the McLaren team, where he will drive alongside fellow British racer and 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton who was honoured last year.
Mr Button’s former team boss, Ross Brawn, is made an OBE. Mr Brawn, 55, originally from Manchester, recently persuaded seven-times F1 champion Michael Schumacher to come out of retirement and drive for his team in 2010.
Another new MBE is Claire Taylor, the first woman to be named one of Wisden's cricketers of the year,
The prolific run-scoring of Taylor, 34, originally from Amersham, Buckinghamshire, helped the England women's cricket team to victory in the World Cup and World Twenty20 competitions this year.
Vic Akers, the former manager of the successful Arsenal Ladies' Football Club, is awarded an OBE.
There are also MBEs for former England cricketer John Jameson, 68, six-times world champion marathon canoeist Anna Hemmings, 33, Scottish golfer Catriona Matthew, 40, and Derby County Football Club stalwart Gordon Guthrie.
