Two Days Earlier on the QPR Official Site: December 29, 2005 - HAPPY NEW YEAR-
Rangers Chairman Gianni Paladini and the Board of Directors would like to wish all QPR fans a Happy New Year. - After an eventful 2005, Paladini has issued the following statement to supporters of Queens Park Rangers: - "As you all know, as a club we went through difficult times and the new board had to bear quite a challenge and responsibility. - "Thanks to some huge efforts in renewing its organization and bringing in some new investments, QPR are now sailing in safe waters. - "We are optimistic when looking ahead for the New Year and for the whole of 2006, especially as we know we can always count on your continuous support. "Our hope and aim is that QPR will never again have to struggle against organizational confusion and financial distress that have badly hit the good name of our glorious club. "A special mention must go to Ian Holloway, who has shown his passion and devotion to the club and as someone who gives us positive hopes for promotion. "We are proud of our players and we are confident that we can continue to strengthen our team with some new arrivals at the beginning of the next year. "A special thanks must also go to all our colleagues and staff and of course to all our fans who, from generation to generation, continue to support the club. "We wish to embrace them all, one by one, with our motto "We are QPR!" "We wish you all the best for a wonderful 2006." QPR
And in that December 2005 QPR Q&A, Paladini also said: "...We are arranging a new loan with the Lloyds TSB. The directors will give their personal guarantee on the loan. We hope to get an interest rate between 5.75% to 6%. Depending on the final interest rate we will save between £400-425k per year.....We are bringing the loss down every year and within a few years we hope to break even. Then we can really move forward"

QPR OFFICIAL STATEMENT - Following the weekend's media reports, the Board of Directors have issued a statement. - Numerous stories alleged that QPR were on the brink of selling some of their most valuable players, most notably Dan Shittu, but the Board would like to state there is no such truth in the rumours.
- The statement reads: - "The board unanimously condemns recent allegations from some badly informed newspapers with regards to the sale of some of our players for ridiculous amounts of money and also the replacement of our manager. - "We would like to clarify that there is absolutely no need to sell players in order to settle monies due to the Inland Revenue as we are fully up to date with our repayments. - "Furthermore, stories claiming that Jim Smith is to become the Director of Football at Loftus Road are completely unfounded."

Bump...
Obviously some say (Holloway himself says) he changed his style, etc. Personally I was outraged by his axing. And the manner of his axing. Mid season/Gardening Leave (along with his assistants) And if he'd been allowed to sign HIS players (within a budget)...Just maybe...

The start of the soap opera that QPR became under Paladini & then Briatore. Personally I think The Former Two Bit Agent had it in for Ollie the moment he staged his "gunfight" coup as he was very much preceived to be a Bill Power man.
However there was no ways he could fire the guy there and then - he was still popular - so he did it very sneakily.
This is my theory but I think he knew he had to break IH's poularity so the one way of doing it was to make out that he (GP) was loyal to QPR & IH - and not the other way round - hence all his talk about IH being great, etc, etc. So then Paladini could claim that he was betrayed and his loyalty amounted to a slap in the face.
Many fans brought that argument - without really getting into the all the facts behind Leicester's move. By putting IH on gardening leave and slapping a gag order - Paladini wa sbale to give his version of the story, knowing full well that by the time IH was able to speak it would be too late.
Another thing that I noticed at this time (and I have mentioned it before), was the number of new comers to the QPR m/b's many of them with one thing in common, that they found fault with everything that Holloway did. Suddenly he was clueless, took us as far as he could, was apoor coach, couldn't handle pressure and was leading us backwards.
Now this could have been a coincidence but to this day I don't think so. I believe that a propaganda campaign had bee n satrted by our then "beloved" chairman with the intention of demonizing a popular coach - with help from a minority of fans who had been very vocal about Ollie from the beginning, plus a lot of newcomers, who all seemed to have similar sounding user names and all joining with a very short time of each other.
Add in the fact, as we now know, that GP was dictating what the club could buy and what the team should be and you start to think that maybe this was a well planned plot.
Where it backfired was that his preferred choice, John Gregory was not available at the time, so he went for the hopeless but popular Gary Waddock.
Great player, poor coach. After looking so comfortable at Christmas - we almost went down that season. In fact if itb wasn't for that thriiling 4-3 win at Crewe (and either team could have won it that day), we would have.
Argue as much as you like but that is my theory.
at the time I was still on the fence with Paladini - willing to give him a chance but aware of all the stories that were coming out (I remember having a long telephone chat one afternoon in late 2005) witha fan in the know. After this saga, all bets were off - knew then that this man was a walking disaster.

I take it then MM that you don't necessarily disagree with my theory.
The Sousa case, where a certain message board produced an unlikely story of PS having a few drinks with an unknown fan and then spilling his guts, convinced me that a similar tactic had been used before.

The mysteries of (QPR) life, Saphili!
I think what are undeniable facts from that time
Holloway was given permission to speak to Leicester with no "if you speak, you're axed" warnings.
My understanding at the time was that he was even "encouraged" to speak to Leicester
That at the time he was looking to move.
That there was "involvement" to put it mildly in players brought in
I could never understand why Breacker and Penrice were put on "Gardening Leave" - What had they done? You want to axe them, axe them.
The very idea of putting them on gardening leave. I know whose idea I always THOUGHT it was. But I have no knowledge.
Re the Gregory replacing Holloway: That was speculaton while Holloway was still at QPR
At the time of his axing, we were going through a poor spell. But every club has them.
If Holloway was going to be axed, at the end of the season
Under Waddock we almost went down....(After his 2 wins from first 3 games), we crashed down the table.
And I never understood why after that terrible first season - THEN Waddock got a 2? year contract - and was axed a few months later
And I would have put a lot of faith in Holloway's ability to pick up players, if he'd had a transfer budget. (Even more if he could have kept his original coaching assistant of Jackett and Johnson)

Yep that's how I understood it as well.
The Leicester story first.
IH was put on gardening leave because he dared to speak to Leicester without Paladini's permission - or rather that was how the story was presented by the club at the time (or arther by Paladini). IH could not give his side of the story at the time as a gagging order had been placed on him.
GP then adds fuel to the fire by stating that what IH had done was an act of betrayal. By the time IH was able to give his side of the story it was too late - many fans had already brought the "official" story and besides for what purpose as he was effectively sacked in any case.
IH's story, as you say, was that GP told him that Leicester had asked permission and when IH asked for waht his repsonse was he got the impression that GP wanted him gone and that he had no choice but to listen to what Leicester had to say.
So now we have 2 different versions of this story, so who is lying and who is telling the truth?
Well I have a good idea, but to to get a real clue let's go forward a few months in 2006 and see what happened at a certain court case, where certain people linked to QPR were facing serious charges that came about from the so called gunfight in the QPR boardroom saga. Not only were the men found not guilty but the judge had a lot to say about GP's role as a witness, while questioning his (GP's) honesty.
I have no doubts that IH did want out - he was pretty vocal afterwards about GP's role and influence at QPR, particularly with team selections and purchases. Now it could be a case of a disgruntled former worker - except that other coaches, Gregory and Dowie in particular, also hinted that this was happening at QPR. Certainly some of our buys and team selections at the time were pretty bizarre.
As for the slump, yes we were in a slump when IH left but that had been the case for every season he had been in charge at QPR - most noticeably the 13 run without a win in late 2002 (which included Vauxhall Motors). He had gone through all of them and still ame out tops, so why would this be any different? I believe that the run was used as a catalyst to make some changes to the coaching job - do it while we are in the slump and do not delay.
The theory about new usersand the role that they played? Well what cannot be denied was that at the end of 2005, beginning of 2006 I did notice a lot of new users suddenly appearing on the various m/b's and most of them were pretty unhappy about IH.
Of course they could have been genuine fans who were concerned and it was just a coincidence that they all appeared at the same time - as they say in ther classic; people would rather discuss bad news than good news and bad news is more likley to attract more users.
Fair enough and I did accept that it was possible but I always had that nagging feeling that it was not coincidental. When the PS story broke out (and yes I did read the story that was posted on WATRB and other websites) I thought it was a bit far fetched and very much an unlikely story.
I did find it very strange that many fans believed that story without question, although let's not forget that PS was under fire from many fans at the time (I admit that I had huge question marks about him at the time). However, when it was used as a justification to fire the man I just had the nagging feeling that I had seen this happen 2 years before, i.e. using a website to get rid of somebody who was out of favour with the board.
Maybe I have got it all wrong and it is possible that this is all coincidence. However I do know that, according to the 2008 finances, Sousa was paid compensation for his sacking.

The thread made by a fan regarding a conversation with Sousa was published on at least three different messageboards but for some reason many want to ignore that fact and would love to blieve that it was an orchestrated campaign between the club and Pete Davies to find a reason to dismiss him Although the football was absolutely dire at the time under Sousa I still think the vast majority would have given him more time to improve results including myself but in hindsight it was perhaps best he went when he did though the circumstances were pretty bizzare to say the least What is interesting though is that the alledged conversation has elevated from a fan having a chat with Sousa on the steps of the Box Office to sitting down with a few drinks with him ;D

What was the other board it was on? The story was obviously reproduced on other boards but all clearly stated Pete's site as the source and never mentioned any other. Revisionism is a wonderful thing. The idea that the football was dire is equally strange to me, just like our unbeaten run, having the tightest defence and best keeper in the league was something to be proud of given the shyte we'd been through. I think we will all, with hindsight, agree that Sousa is an excellent defensive coach. As yet has not proven himslef as a manager. Snappy dresser though. ;D Edit: I do agree that I never read or heard about Sousa going for a drink with fans and discussing, Blackstock etc.

The issue was not whether Sousa should have been fired or not (as I mentioned I had big doubts about the guy) but the manner in which it was done.
The story was first mentioned on the WATRB site and the story is very much as has been described; that after QPR had just beaten Palace around Apr 2009, a fan ended up in a pub sharing drinks with Paola Sousa where PS then took the opportunity to tell this fan all with Blackstock's move to Forest amongst other gripes. If I remember correctly the poster of that thread did say that he was not the actual fan in the pub but rather that was what he been told by another fan (the poster did say that he wasn't sure if it was a true story or not, but felt compelled all the same to post it).
That story was then copied & posted onto other sites, most notably Ade's fan site where it was quickly removed when they realised the full consequences of that thread. As far as I know it was never posted on the official m/b but clearly there were discussions about it as you would expect. In most, if anot all cases, Pete's board was mentioned as the source.
What is known is that Blackstock had been transferred to Forest on loan, soon to be permanent, and that the move had happened during the week when PS was away from the club (family reasons if I remember). Now it is true that Big Dex had been used sparingly by the club but there was massive contradiction between club and coach whether PS had been party to the move or not. I do know DB's agent did say that PS was told of it - but it was never really made clear by this agent when PS had been told, i.e. before or after the move was a done deal as implied by the coach himself.
As I mentioned above, most websites removed the story as soon as it appeared on them - and most moderators warned fans not to talk about this story due to the sensitive nature of the contents.
What I do know is that PS was removed as coach due to discussing confidential club issues with people outside the club (the nature of the confidential issue was never disclosed, although it was accepted that it was all about Blackstock's move) and it was implied that the story had been leaked onto the web.
I am not going to speculate whether the story happened or not. My feeling is that it was total BS - although it is very possible that PS did confide to somebody close the the club and that that person took it up with the board. What I do feel is that a certain m/b was used as a vehicle to get rid of somebody that the club no longer wanted.
I am not going to say whether it was done innocently or not, although I would imagine that somebody should have checked the facts first on what was surely going to be a sensitive story, but it was just too close for comfort to what I saw happen in early 2006 - when threads from a host new users started appearing on various m/b's all with a very common theme. I had the feeling that it was possible that the web was being used as a vehicle by somebody at the club to achieve his own agenda (whatever that was).
Conspiracy theory? Possibly. Far fetched? Again possibly. Coincidental? I'm not so sure.

Match Reports of Crew 3 QPR 4
Saturday, December 31, 2005 Post Match Comments re Game and re his Job - QPR OFFICIAL SITE - IAN HOLLOWAY COMMENTSIan Holloway was happy to take all three points back from Gresty Road after a seven goal thriller. We showed terrific character! There were lots of things wrong, but you have to give Crewe some credit for that.I was certainly on the edge of my seat! "There were two tired teams out there. It was about showing character and keeping going. We got it wrong defensively a few times, we couldn't get our line right until late in the game." Despite not being happy about certain aspects of his teams play, Ollie was delighted with his teams attacking play. "We scored some great goal, we played well and we showed desire. The longer it went on the better we got. It was a great game and a great advert for this division!" Gianni Paladini had earlier denied reports linking Jim Smith to the club, Holloway responded. "I'm sick and tired of it, it seems every man, dingo and his dog is linked with my job. I've got it and you just try and take it off me if you can!" www.qpr.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Match/ManagersComments/0,,10373~762104,00.html BBC - QPR boss Ian Holloway: "We already have more points than we did at this exact point this time last year with a game hand. Holloway's men could still reach the play-offs this season if they build on their 4-3 win at Gresty Road, but George Graham and Jim Smith have also been suggested as possibilities to take over at Loftus Road. "We already have more points than we did at this exact point this time last year with a game in hand," Holloway said. "But that doesn't seem to be good enough for some people. "I'm sick and tired of every Tom, Dick and Harry getting linked with my job every day. Well ding, dang, doo. It's my job, I own it and it's up to anyone else to take it off me. "I'm proud of my players, of what we are doing here a re what we are trying to achieve and that's all that matters. "Today's game was a great advert for the league. He said: "You have to question whether the players are as good as those they are playing. We are going to have to play much better than that if we are going to survive in league. "Basic errors costs us and in this league it is tough to get away with that." www.sportinglife.com/football/cc_championship/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=soccer/05/12/31/SOCCER_Crewe_2nd_Nightlead.html&TEAMHD=nationwide1CREWE OFFICIAL SITE Dario Gradi has told the club's official web-site: "It's hard to work out all the time how the goals are going in, the first of the goals were a little unfortunate. We had the ball in the box quite a lot in the second half, but the play was a bit rushed. "Luke (Rodgers) is trying over-head kicks and Jonah is kicking the ball anywhere and obviously we have to have better quality. They had better quality than us in the end. They had more possession than us and their quality told in the end. "Perhaps, in the end, we have got the ability of the players we are playing against. It's a tough league, the toughest it has been and we have to play at our very best. Maybe that isn't something they can do week in week out but its what they have to do to stay in this league. He added: " We'll have to do better than we did tonight if we want to stay in this league, there is no doubt about that. www.crewealex.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/managers_view/0,,10414~761920,00.html qprreport.blogspot.com/2005/12/post-match-comments-re-game-and-re-his.html
