PFA Fans' Player of the Month: November '09 winners
Wayne Rooney, Kevin Nolan, Jermaine Beckford and Jason Pearce take PFA honours
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney celebrated his weekend hat-trick against Portsmouth by being named PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for November.
Rooney’s treble against the league’s bottom club took his tally for the season to 12, and he’s bang on course to break the 20-goal barrier at United for the second time.
With United losing to Chelsea, and with Didier Drogba on fire, some people were tipping the Blues’ striker to take the honours this month.
But Rooney’s ever-expanding fan club shows no sign of giving up on the man who has taken on the role of ‘United talisman’ from Ronaldo with consummate ease.
Championship
Fans’ Player of the Month in the Championship for the second month running is Newcastle’s all-action midfielder Kevin Nolan.
The Magpies are still flying high, and so is Nolan who says: “If I can keep popping up with goals here and there, especially the match-winning ones, then great.
“But I would rather win every game between now and the end of the season and not score at all. It is nice when you score a goal and we win, and hopefully I can continue to do that but, if not, if we keep winning – that is the main thing.”
League One
No real surprise in League One where Leeds United goal machine Jermaine Beckford continues to rack up the votes – and has added the November award to his October gong.
The plaudits keep coming in for Beckford whose amazing consistency in front of goal once again means he will be touted as a potential target in the January transfer window. Not if manager Simon Grayson has his way.
“I'll be bracing myself for calls in January, but he won't be going anywhere,” Grayson said.
"Jermaine came off the transfer list in the summer and the chairman has promised me that he won't be going anywhere.”
League Two
Bournemouth are going great guns in League Two and whilst leading scorer Brett Pitman – fans’ player of the month in September – continues to hog the headlines, the form of iron man defender Jason Pearce has not gone unnoticed.
Cherries’ boss Eddie Howe has spoken in glowing terms about Pearce and Howe’s predecessor, Jimmy Quinn, is another big fan of the November fans’ player of the month, having spotted his potential last season. Quinn said: "He's made of steel.
"I've been delighted with Jason. You look within your squad to see which players have got grit, determination and a bit of character - and he fits the bill on all counts for me. He's certainly a player I think can play a lot higher.”
